Very glad that only the 12 premier teams get a bye into round four.

Couldn't they use a different system instead of byes in the preliminary round? Rewarding teams for their performance in the previous season? I know that would be difficult because of Covid wiping out last season but, in general, I think it would be a better system than random byes.

That should indeed be the system. Clearly not defendable to have tier 6 clubs playing in Prelim and tier 7 clubs getting byes into R1; or 5th playing in Prelim and 10th getting a bye; etc. (Indeed the R1 and R3 byes which have just been abolished were given by position not randomly).

However as all ended-up null & void last season, the only difference it makes is that 8 clubs from the EOS First Division and 2 from the WOS First Division are still in the running for byes when they would not have been otherwise. Then come next season you will have more licensed clubs and probably some qualifiers so there will be considerably fewer than 15 byes.

So it's clearly an anomaly that needs sorted IMO... but thankfully it's not making as much difference this season as it might have.

Preliminary will be drawn week commencing Monday 9th August - date tbc - with 11 ties & 15 byes. Preliminary ties are Saturday 28th August.
