Fred basically left his leg back (thus negating any potential advantage) to initiate contact and then go down.  That's an awful decision by the officials

Not really. Fred controlled the ball with his left foot so he could turn inside. I don't think he expected to get clattered with a tackle that was nowhere close to getting the ball.

Eh? The ball never touched his left foot. He's clearly moved his left leg into the Arsenal player.

He didn't touch it but his foot is out to shield/protect the ball as it comes towards him, as any intelligent player would do.

It was an idiotic attempt at a challenge by Odegaard and an absolute stonewall penalty that never should have needed VAR.

Sorry meant right foot. He stepped across the ball with his left foot to protect it and turn inside

How did he make contact with the Arsenal player btw, who made a sliding challenge that got nowhere near the ball? I think the rash slide is what caused the contact.

If the Arsenal player wasn't there there's no chance Fred puts his leg out like that, he keeps running. The Arsenal boy has clattered him but Fred has well and truly bought that and knew what he was doing. Shielding the ball had nothing to do with it.

So your argument is that players shouldn't be allowed to control the ball in a way that stops an opponent playing the ball?

He's got his foot out (shielding) the ball in the hope the Arsenal player was stupid enough to challenge through the back of him. You see that several times a game and it was doesn't change the fact it was a clear foul.

It was absolutely not the type where you see an attacking player actively moving their foot out at an odd angle to initiate contact with a defender and claim a foul.

What side  are you arguing for?

Not at all. I'm saying that's not what he did at all. He's put his leg out to draw contact from the Arsenal player and that's exactly what's happened.
