Ro Sham Bo
That's abysmal refereeing there.
DrewDon
I'm not sure there's much of an excuse for the referee not catching that in real time.
senorsoupe
Fred basically left his leg back (thus negating any potential advantage) to initiate contact and then go down. That's an awful decision by the officials
19QOS19
Incredible. Fred makes the contact an is awarded a penalty.

I don't think he expected to get clattered with a tackle that was nowhere close to getting the ball.

He's clearly moved his left leg into the Arsenal player.
Ro Sham Bo
I agree with McCoist. It was clever by Fred, but there was nothing he did that would prevent a penalty being the outcome.

It was an idiotic attempt at a challenge by Odegaard and an absolute stonewall penalty that never should have needed VAR. He stepped across the ball with his left foot to protect it and turn inside How did he make contact with the Arsenal player btw, who made a sliding challenge that got nowhere near the ball? I think the rash slide is what caused the contact. Edited December 2, 2021 by Jim McLean's Ghost
8MileBU
What a nonsense from the ref trying to call that from right behind. Was a bit baffled when play continued and no immediate VAR call. Stonewaller.

The Arsenal boy has clattered him but Fred has well and truly bought that and knew what he was doing. Shielding the ball had nothing to do with it.

Thorongil
Astonishing that anyone could conclude that wasn’t a foul in the box.

He's got his foot out (shielding) the ball in the hope the Arsenal player was stupid enough to challenge through the back of him. You see that several times a game and it was doesn't change the fact it was a clear foul. It was absolutely not the type where you see an attacking player actively moving their foot out at an odd angle to initiate contact with a defender and claim a foul. 19QOS19
So your argument is that players shouldn't be allowed to control the ball in a way that stops an opponent playing the ball? Not at all. I'm saying that's not what he did at all. He's put his leg out to draw contact from the Arsenal player and that's exactly what's happened.

DrewDon
One day, when I am extremely bored, I will keep a tally of how often McCoist says "by the way", "I have to say" and "I really do" on commentary.
