Tears now in full flow even at the Economist
I haven't read the article (behind a paywall) but someone on the Twitter thread claiming they have and saying the ambiguous adjective "striking" is intended positively - as in it is a good thing that Italy managed to win without needing to resort to using players of colour?!?

Anyone have access to the article in full?

Plus: more Chiellini pics plz [emoji7]

Edit - Hand of God commentary.

It's been thirty-five years, so forgive my failing memory, but did every match at Mexico 86 have a giant sea urchin floating over the centre circle?

Just those in the Aztec Stadium.

I really don't remember this! The threat of that crashing down onto you wouldn't be off-putting at all.

Wouldn't want to see a video of myself when Marshall saved in Serbia!

Right. Nobody has an issue with the emotion being shown.  It’s the fact that they 1. Set up a camera, 2. Overplayed their reactions for social media, and 3. Hooked it up to the inter web, looking for likes, shares and subscribes, and probably an interview with Sky Sports.   The England football team really does appeal to a bizarre mix of egotists and racists.

WTF is going on with the top middle? It looks like a badly-Shopped random screengrab from a nightmarish tentacle porn video.

I'd imagine.

So you’re saying it’s a wid from you?

Never mind the handball, that is truly woeful defending. As the commentary says, Maradona just walks away from Hoddle who has no interest in chasing, the next guy is half arsed at best, two defenders pretend to make an effort but don't really, then everyone just ignores the best player in the world jogging into the box before Hodge blindly plays the ball over his head into the most dangerous possible area. Finally handball or not, Shilton should not be getting out jumped by someone about a foot smaller than him. Glorious.

You can end up thinking that a lot watching football from the Eighties.

It's funny how the game changes between eras. I seem to remember reading that in the 19th century, the players just pinged the ball about between each other and there wasn't an awful lot of running involved. Might cause a man to drop his pipe, I suppose.

Some years ago one of the football magazines wanted to show how the game was a lot more physical in the old days, so they got a then-current referee to watch the 1970 Chelsea-Leeds FA Cup Final and note down all the times he would have booked a player or at the very least awarded a free-kick where the actual ref had seen nothing wrong, leaving out of course technical changes like the keeper picking up a passback.

At the end of the game, both teams would have been down to about six men and one guy would have been sent off four times.
