Scottish Cup 2021/22

No question biggest stories are Cowdenbeath and Stranraer.

Interesting to see the pendulum of strength continue to shift: it would've been unthinkable a few years ago to see 12-14 non-league clubs in R3 but particularly for them to break down as: 4x Lowland (with 1 more in replay), 3x East of Scotland, 2x West (maybe 3x), only 1x Highland (freshly-relegated Brechin: admittedly 2 more in replays), and 1x North Junior.

Some very large crowds of almost 900 at Preston v Auchinleck plus almost 700 at Sauchie v Dunipace.

R3 draw:

Scottish Championship (10)
Arbroath, Ayr United, Dunfermline Athletic, Greenock Morton, Hamilton Academical, Inverness Caledonian Thistle, Kilmarnock, Partick Thistle, Queen of the South, Raith Rovers

SPFL1 (10)
Airdrie, Alloa Athletic, Clyde, Cove Rangers, Dumbarton, East Fife, Falkirk, Montrose, Peterhead, Queen's Park

SPFL2 (6)
Annan Athletic, Edinburgh City, Forfar Athletic Kelty Hearts, Stenhousemuir, Stirling Albion

Lowland League (4)
Bonnyrigg Rose Athletic, Civil Service Strollers, East Kilbride, Gala Fairydean Rovers

Highland League (1)
Brechin City

East of Scotland League (3)
Lothian Thistle HV/Dunbar United, Sauchie, Tranent

West of Scotland League (2)
Auchinleck Talbot, Darvel

North Juniors (1)
Banks o'Dee

tbc (3)
Albion Rovers v Brora Rangers
Clydebank v Elgin City
Rothes v Dalbeattie Star

To be fair, only 2 League 2 clubs eliminated at this stage so far, I'm sure there must be years recently when more than 2 were eliminated at this stage?

Highland League is interesting though, potentially only 1 team through, when would the last time that happened be?

There must be worse years at this stage for L2 sides.

Neither exit is a great surprise.

We’ve been poor for weeks but on the flip side the manager has gone.

Darvel are well financed and have quite a few SPFL standard players.

HJ is right poor year for the HL but with more southern teams coming in perhaps that was always going to be the case.

Edited to add

Two L2 sides lost in the First Round last season (the equivalent of this season’s Second Round) so no change.

The season before five went out so the last two seasons have seen an improvement.

The pendulum is likely to swing further away from the HL once more top WoS clubs like Pollok, Kilwinning and Hurlford are licensed, but on the flip side Banks o Dee could easily have replaced Fort William a year from now with the likes of Lochee United, Carnoustie Panmure, Tayport and Broughty Athletic likely to follow in the years ahead to provide more quality in depth.

R3 used to only have 32 teams in it (16 SPFL Champ/L1 + 16 R1 winners) and now has 40 teams (20 SPFL Champ/L1 + 20 R1 winners) so that will be partly the reason.

You're now guaranteed at least 10 non-league teams compared to just 6 guaranteed previously.

Disappointing that fewer than half of ties appear to have had their attendance issued? Here are those that did:

678     Sauchie v Dunipace
608     Kelty v Buckie
401     Brechin v Haddington
395     Annan v Jeanfield
357     Stranraer v Darvel
352     Edinburgh City v Bo'ness Utd
282     Cowdenbeath v Civil Service Strollers
250     St Cuthbert v Gala
(interestingly a groundhopper counted only 160!)
210     Dalbeattie v Rothes

Yet still no automatic promotion to L2…

It's not a proper pyramid if the league champions aren't automatically promoted and the bottom team aren't automatically relegated IMO.

It’s been said before on P&B:

10th in L2 relegated

HL winner vs LL winner gets promoted

Defeated Play-Off team vs 9th in L2

Bottom of League 2 deserves to be relegated. And the Winner of the Highland/Lowland Play off deserves to be promoted

No Play-offs

I'd go winner of HL v LL is auto promoted and 10th L2 auto relegated. Then 9th in L2 plays loser of HL v LL playoff.

Def also need more than 1 relegated from LL. 2 at least.

LL is worse!

1 relegation place with 143 teams below!

If you are counting all of the teams below the LL, how can the LL be worse as by your logic the SPFL has over 200 teams below it, fighting for a play-off spot?

It's not really remarkable, this is a fairly new format. Round 2 comprised 30 non-league sides and 10 SPFL 2 teams. This guarantees a minimum of 10 non-league teams in round 3, if no league sides are drawn against each other. As it happened 2 SPFL teams lost to non-league with 2 other results outstanding and there were no SPFL 2 match ups.

Of the 10 definitely through 8 defeated other non-league sides. The increase in numbers is a consequence of the format changes and the eligibility of more non-league sides to enter,  by itself it is not an indication of an increase in non-league clubs' strengths.
