Scottish Junior Cup 2021-22

Recommended Posts

Difficult one to pick neutral venues !!  Been loving seeing the old lady being taken around the country,  that cup really is a magnificent piece of art any club would love to have it in its trophy cabinet!
I thought maybe the likes of Pollok or Irvine Meadow, I am guessing a senior ground is a no go ?

(Puff) Piece on the Junior Cup at half-time on BBC Alba in the SPFL Trust Trophy, SJFA Vice-President talks about going up to Burghead and the magic of the cup - not sure the home team would agree given they were paying for Ardrossan's guarantee on an attendance of just 18!

Semi final weekend

Auchinleck Talbot v. Kirkintilloch Rob Roy @ Meadow Park

Petershill v. Yoker Athletic @ Newlandsfield Park

As part of the hype the SJFA's COO Alex McDowall made an appearance on the Down the Divisions Podcast.

Few hints to the future including their Junior Cup replacement proposal. Looking to start in 2023-24 if it's accepted, so another year of the Junior Cup. Talking up a £80k prize pot every year. £25k for the winner, £15k for the runners up, £10k for the losing semi finalists, with the remaining £20k split amongst the Last 16/32.

He also mentioned how the name of the competition can be an issue, with sponsors thinking it was youth football.

Sadly the hosts didn't seem to know enough to actually ask pertinent questions, no mention of whether these former clubs would actually come back, whether HL/EOS clubs would join and nothing about the South Challenge Cup or the WOS proposal.

The thing about opening SJFA membership up to former members was a bit weird as tier 6 clubs can already join the SJFA according to their rules.

Some digs at the other fixture secretary and former junior clubs for "having a thing about the juniors"...

Some of those questions were answered through the course of the conversation.

The confusion that 'Junior' can cause is why it's a replacement/new competition.

The £80k a year prize money is to tempt the former clubs back (supposedly even some Division 2(?) clubs were interested because of that kind of money).

HL/LL weren't interested.

It was seen as making Kennie's life easier so presumably seen as the South Challenge & Junior Cup being scrapped for this new competition. The alternate proposal has no prize money, although there's mention of trying to get the SFA involved or that it could change. Of course the SJFA don't have the £80k a year, they just hope to get it together through multiple sponsors, the BBC Alba money, and whatever other means they can manage.

It will be interesting to see if date for Junior Cup remains same with announcement that Nations League playoff final will be 5pm

Well the time can't be changed if it is broadcast on BBC Alba, though I suppose it could go to the Friday or Saturday. If Auchinleck don't win the WOSFL and fail to win their South Challenge Cup semi-final then it could be played on the previous Sunday - but they won't know about the outcome of the former until 14th May.
