Why cant we produce top class forwards?

Recommended Posts

The 80s we had top lads like tailend Jordan, Dalglish, Wark, Archibald, Gray, Sharp, Sturrock, McClair, Nevin, gradually giving way to guys like Durie, Gallacher, McCoist, Johnston

Since then, nothing. James McFadden.

We've since produced top class keepers centrebacks fullbacks midfielders but not a striker winger or attacking mid of note.

Up until the last couple of years, we had three ageing goalkeepers, two absurdly good left backs, and a smattering of decent midfielders.

The fact that Adams, Dykes, and (perhaps unfairly) Nisbet, are judged to be below our standards - considering we had McNulty and Brophie upfront in the last couple of years - is an indication of huge progress.

Adams and Nisbet will continue to improve, and Dykes isn’t awful.

But yes, no answer as to why we don’t create many good options in the position that surely must be the favourite of most young footballers the world over?

Neither Adams nor Dykes are products of Scottish youth football though. The best current striker produced by our youth system is Kevin Nisbet. Second best is who, Shankland?

I would say it's not just forwards, we haven't produced any decent defenders either. Even Hanley only spent a couple of years in Scottish youth football and Cooper is from England. The best defenders made in Scotland are McKenna, Hendry and Gallagher, which is why we have a left back and a midfielder in central defence.

McTominay was grown in Manchester too. Andy Robertson was released by Celtic for being too small (genius level move), played four league games for Queens Park against Rangers without anyone spotting his potential and when he left Scotland he was still only good enough for Hull. His rise from there was thanks to his own determination and to English clubs.

When Billy Gilmour moved to Chelsea just after his 16th birthday Malky Mackay lamented his decision to leave Rangers, saying that he could have "emulated Barry Ferguson." Pinnacle of ambition there.

The number of players we've produced this century who are genuinely of the standard you'd expect of a nation in the top 16 in Europe is pathetic. For a country with as many players and clubs as we do, with as much focus and interest in the game, it's fucking garbage.

Compared to our peers we are grossly underachieving and have done for perhaps three decades now. And there are no signs of that turning around at all.

I don’t think Adams is remotely below our standards, he just isn’t a goal scoring striker. At the same time though, I can’t really think of many chances that he has had. If he is able to improve this then he will be a fantastic all round striker. Easier said than done though.

Point is we havent produced anyone comparable even to Durie since, its been a downwards plummet since the 80s, thirty fucking years without a new forward of much note

He’s manifestly above our standards. His first touch is absolutely unreal. Compare it to Dykes.

Yup, his link up play is pretty brilliant. I was pretty fucked throughout all our games, but I don’t remember much of this link up taking place with Dykes - much of it with supporting midfield players. I think we’ll be a much better side without Dykes and one of our better technical players in the side instead.

When did England last produce a world class goalkeeper?

Things like this seem to be cyclical. The cycles just take longer the smaller the nation is, and even longer if you don't have the right development processes in place.

For all you know Aaron Pressley is about to have a breakthrough season at Brentford. Or Kyle Joseph at Swansea.

It's not just Scotland who have problems, there's actually very few quality strikers coming through anywhere in the game just now.

My own thoughts are that the way the game is played has changed (not for the better imo), where there's a huge emphasis on the team game which seems to have coached / discouraged individuality out of the game.

Being honest, when was the last time you saw someone dribble past 3 or 4 players ?

Other than Messi, there's virtually none of these types left in the game. Nobody takes any responsibility nowadays, there's very few wingers in the game and the emphasis is all on fitness, power and retaining possession as opposed to skill and the majority of the top strikers in world football are all the wrong side of 30, which I think pretty much says it all.

Just imagine watching the Euros in 1996 and finding out that Gordon Durie would be the best striker to play for Scotland for the next quarter of a century. At least.

Also, Gordon Strachan's mind was broken by childhood bullying about his height, and he believes in the genetic inferiority of Scots now. Deal with it, kid.
