New SPFL sponsor

Recommended Posts

I see we've got ourselves a new sponsorship for the SPFL in the form of Cinch.

Look forward to seeing Rylan Clark Neal at a ground near you this season!

Any information as to what the deal is worth to clubs? As a supporter of a side that seems to haemorrhage money it would be nice to know what we might get from this deal.

The SPFL are saying it's their "biggest ever" deal. Ladbrokes was about £2-2.5m, so probably somewhere close to £3m a year? It just goes into the prize pot, so we'll never really know.

The bottom club in the league gets a clapped out Vauxhall Corsa. League winner gets a second hand Ford Mondeo.

It wouldn't shock me if they are touting it based on the total value of the deal and not per year.

So 4 times the entire population of Scotland watches Scottish football? Was there not a thread on here about a month ago showing TV viewing figures of all the live games lat season?

No idea about the accuracy of the figures but they are all here:

Teams relegated to the Highland League get a banged up off-road vehicle.

Apart from the Scotland Serbia game no other match broke the 1m barrier.

The new year old firm when people couldn't leave their house, no fans in stadiums or pubs and pre Celtic's January meltdown (when the league  albeit it was already looking like a Rangers romp but could be argued it could still become competitive) they couldn't break the 1m barrier in the 10 in a row/Rangers 1st ever league win season. There will never be conditions like that again and they still couldn't breach the 1m barrier. For contrast on a quick google search on random tv figures last year Leicester v West Ham peaked at 830,000 viewers on BT and Sky had an Arsenal v Sheff Utd ranged from 750,000-1.1m.

So if less than 1/5th of the population watches the biggest domestic game in a generation when on earth is 4 times the population watching the other games?????

Streams and abroad.

It won't be for a single game. It will be 20 million people watch at least one game over the course of the season.

The quote is UK audience. The population of the UK is around 66m, do you think nearly 1/3rd of the UK watched an SPFL game last year? To get that figure you would need Grannys and toddlers tuning in to the odd game. I doubt 20m different people from the UK even watched an EPL game.

Fair enough then.

These things are always inflated though. There's never a billion people watching the Super Bowl like is claimed.

My guess is that they simply add all the viewing figures for each game. So watch 20 games a season and you'll be counted 20 times.

It's either a cumulative figure - aggregating viewership from each match and therefore counting committed fans dozens of times - or else based on some massively loose 'definition': like if you buy a newspaper (there are articles about football games and some of those are SPFL); or watch the news (there are reports about football games and some of those are SPFL); etc.

It's like that SFA review in 2018 which claimed 780,000 people in Scotland played football (and 89% of those were male i.e. between 1 in 3 and 1 in 4 men played football). Clearly absurd.

It claimed 1 in 6 people in Aberdeen & Aberdeenshire played football.

When you read the detail... nationwide they tallied 134,000 men & boys playing organised football... then estimated 660,000 playing "informally" in streets, parks, playgrounds etc... If it was assumed you kicked a ball in your back garden at least once in a year that presumably counted.

It also claimed 1.8M adults in Scotland were football fans.

If so 94% of them weren't bothering going to games each weekend.

So they were all Rangers and Celtic fans then.
