Sacking your manager after four months? Missing out on the top 6 with a last minute goal? Dropping from double champions to relegation fodder? Accepting a sponsorship deal from a scam Crypto company?

Amateurs.

Dundee...

  • Hired a manager who immediately had to serve a six game ban from five years ago.
  • Said manager is subsequently on an 11 game winless streak.
  • Said manager threw a strop at a journalist when asked a routine question about a substitution.
  • Had a player commit the worst dive in football history.
  • Signed an out of shape, scandal ridden Leigh Griffiths.
  • Said player's main contribution was kicking a flare in to the stands.
  • Punted their top scorer for free.
  • Said top scorer has subsequently scored 9 goals in 18 games with his new club.
  • Kept their manager after a 6-0 gubbing at home to Ross County.
  • Sacked said manager after two back to back wins.
  • Signed a much hyped Canadian midfielder to a three year contract, then never played him.
  • Had one of their forwards miss a set piece as he was retrieving a hair bobble.

You can't compete with such dedication to the banter.

Are we still top of that chart for nutmegging our opponents more than any other team in the league as well? We are the cinch and we are only here for the banter.

May I present to you the case of Dunfermline Athletic Football Club:

  • Appointed Peter Grant as manager. Peter Grant had, the season before (20/21), managed Alloa to relegation. That season before (20/21) we won a single away game all season. This was of course against Peter Grant’s Alloa, where we won 1-4.

  • Peter Grant left Alloa after relegating them (his contract was finished). They didn't seem desperate to keep him on and very few appeared to upset at him leaving.

  • Peter Grant seemingly never actually applied for the job; he was approached by the board, who apparently were impressed by how his Alloa team played football, even going so far as to call it ‘good football’. They even cited the 1-4 win as a prime example, and the game that apparently swayed them. Grant’s football was so ‘good’ that his Alloa team were relegated, finishing a clear 7 points behind 9th.

  • Peter Grant’s appointment immediately halted season ticket sales, as it was greeted with a rather unfavourable reaction.

  • To the shock of no one save the morons who appointed him, Peter Grant was the worst manager in the club’s history (0 wins in 12 league games, with 9 goals scored and 20 conceded). He made incredibly poor signings and put together a really pish squad. He signed about 238949832 centre backs.

  • Peter Grant talked about handing out 'bowlfuls of confidence' to players. Going by how we played, he couldn't even manage a fucking thimbleful of confidence.

  • Paul Watson was fired from the club for fucking off on holiday, seemingly faking COVID to do so. Peter Grant stated that Watson came back in to training “with a tan and a haircut”.

  • After losing to Queen of the South (our 8th league game, zero wins), fans were expecting Grant to be sacked. When a club statement was put up, fans thought it has happened (https://dafc.co.uk/story.php?t=DAFC_Board_Statement&ID=13369). Instead, the statement unbelievably backed Grant, claiming that he has proven he can “handle such situations in the past”. It also claimed that a disallowed goal at Queen of the South lost us the game, despite Pars TV clearly showing it to be offside, with a large ‘Offside’ flashing on screen in the highlights of the incident. The club lied to the fans. A long, mewling list of excuses were rattled off, despite every club having to operate with the same (injuries, COVID). The fans were them pretty much blamed for losing the club sponsors. An incident at the end of the game, where a fan ran to the barrier to shout abuse, was massively blown out of proportion by the club.

  • After keeping Peter Grant on and the club backing him, Grant went on to win zero games. He was sacked after a 2-4 loss at Arbroath, after which some fans ‘attacked’ the team bus.

  • The first game after Grant’s departure was cause for optimism. Greg Shields and Steven Whittaker, the first team coaches, took charge. We lost 1-3 at home to Morton.

  • The club appointed John Hughes. He signed utter trash, with one or two exceptions.

  • Hughes let Craig Wighton, possibly the best striker at the club, go out on loan to Arbroath.

  • Hughes chucked in Lewis McCann and persisted with him for ages when it wasn’t really working.

  • Overall, we signed 17 players this season (including loans).

  • We had 10 players play as centre back, with about 8 different pairings.

  • We signed 4 goalkeepers. We already had one (OFW). One of these keeper never played (Currid) and was released. Another was released (OFW). Another was one of the worst keepers seen at East End (Mehmet). Another was signed as backup and goalie coach (Alexander), and has never played for the club.

  • One of our keepers was on international duty. At the time the only other keeper on the books was an injury doubt. There was real potential for another Ryan Stevenson situation. The keeper did overcome his injury and did play (Mehmet, and he was decent for once). This was why Alexander was signed, but he wasn’t needed.

  • We were knocked out of the Scottish Cup immediately. We have not won a game in the Scottish Cup since November 2017. We have not scored a goal in the Scottish Cup since January 2018.

  • The club didn’t bother to let fans in over the winter period when limited numbers were allowed.

  • John Hughes has not been a success. He has overseen 22 games. He was won 6. He was drawn 6. He has lost 10.

  • Despite this, a late winner against Ayr at East End Park put us 8th, with two games to go, and it was in the team’s own hands to avoid 9th place. What followed was a hideously poor display at Partick Thistle, where had one attempt on goal. One, in a game we desperately needed to win.

  • The playoffs it is then. We are to play Queens Park. The home leg is this Saturday. The club announced the ticket prices; the same prices as normal. This did not go down well with fans. The club’s social media was pretty much nothing but fans expressing their anger at the pricing. Multiple people wrote to the club.

  • The club climbed down from the rank pricing for the Queens Park playoff, issuing a short, huffy statement (https://dafc.co.uk/story.php?t=Updated_Pricing_for_Queens_Park&ID=13759) that once again lied to the fans by claiming that the prices for the last playoff game we were in where fans were allowed (vs Dundee United, Premiership playoffs) were consistent with the pricing for that league campaign. This is untrue, as the club reduced prices for that game.

I assumed that as this was the premiership forum only top flight teams were eligible for the competition

Otherwise we’d just give it to Falkirk every year

  • Relegation?

If this was the badly run club award you'd be up there.

Dundee have some next level banter in there on top of common or garden bad management:

High profile signing of international and Celtic striker and alleged groomer Leigh Griffiths curtailed due to him being shite.

The flare incident.

Giving a failing manager the January window then immediately sacking him when it closed.

McGhee giving inappropriate instructions to the bench because he had a 2 minute time lag on his monitor.

McGhee fasting and being cold.

I'm sure i missed stuff from earlier in the season.

They post that after home game, as it's clearly part of the sponsorship deal to do so.

A Peter Grant masterclass. Graham is unquestionably one of the worst defenders to ever play for the club and will be mentioned in all worst XIs for years to come.

Would enjoy hearing what he has to say about Peter Grant, as I imagine it would be less than favourable. Grant must absolutely annihilated his confidence.

John Hughes didn't fancy him either, as Graham played a total of about 10 minutes under him.

  • Relegation?

That’s an impressively well put together portfolio of evidence, but should St Johnstone go down then I can’t see how anyone else could come close to the title.

Dundee are in the running, but have they been a great deal more worthy than most other seasons? A team struggling against relegation on their first season up is not a big shock, though admittedly a lot of the behind the scenes managerial stuff has been worthy of mention.

Falkirk are clear winners if it's an SPFL-wide title, but a good entry from the Pars nonetheless.

For the Premiership it all depends on how St Johnstone finish the season; I'd have Dundee in front at the moment but being relegated the season after a historic double accompanied by some meltdowns (thinking of a bigger scale than Kelty Hearts) would definitely win it for them.

For non-league it's Fort William. Nice of them to win something for once. Honorable mention to the Lowland League as a collective for in the space of a month voting not to increase relegation then voting to continue with 'guest clubs'.

Darvel were one worth keeping an eye on for all things banter but it's all been rather benign tbh.

If St Johnstone go down, they have to win it on context.

Other clubs have done marvelously well to give us all a good giggle throughout the season, and they should all be proud of their efforts. But for a club to achieve something they'll probably never do again in a season when their fans couldn't attend and then welcome the fans back to the stadium by being relegated and horsed out the cup by a fourth-tier side is just unbeatable.

Please make it happen.
