Who will be the Banter Kings of Scottish Football 2021-22

Recommended Posts

Forgot all about blethering Fitzy and his "highest paid manager in our history and biggest budget alongside it - we are top four Paisley".

Some potential there, too. Especially when the fan owned thing happens next month.

Will someone provide a proper definition of banter?  I'm guessing it's something like a club bottling an entire season with poor decisions and results?

Basically yes. Providing opportunities for supporters of other clubs to point and laugh.  Just being bad on the pitch isn't really enough for most clubs, you have to really earn this title.

It's not really a thing other than on here I don't think, first time I heard it was in 'the Banter years' thread to describe rangers' 'journey' through the lower leagues in a parody of 'the wonder years' tv programme.  They lost to lots of small part time teams despite having a multi-million £ squad, made ridiculous appointments, tremendous outbursts from fans, the club periodically came out with ridiculous cringey statements, all under the cloud of dodgy financial goings on and much more.  Halcyon days.

Whilst we all want to see our own clubs succeed, the thing which sustains Scottish football most is the enjoyment derived from the suffering and misfortune of others.  It's the lifeblood of the game up here.

Looking good for a banter season in the Premier.

Two big hitters in the field back.

Celtic off to a flyer with stellar off field incompetence.

Dons showing possible potential to bring back the good times of the Ebbe/Patterson era.

Livingston are always on the brink of giving us a laugh.

Rangers, at least the fans  and possibly the board if not the team, will always find a way to contribute.

Ideally i'd like hearts 4 adrift at the bottom with 8 to play. Any outcome from there would cause a delicious mix of hilarity and heads gone.

Fun times ahead.

The way Sxottish football is structured  only Rangers, Celtic and St Johnstone can win trophies.

I would guess laughing at the failure of rivals is more important to Scottish fans than anyone else.

It is to me anyway.

And yet we get chased out of your thread anytime we mention the 'Doon Derby'.

You're welcome to mention it but we are welcome to point out that landing the last punch on an already unconscious fighter pales into insignificance compared to the indignities we have visited upon you over the years.

However, I fully appreciate its all you have.

I wouldn't say Hearts have gone completely quiet. Last season we chucked a Scottish Cup final from leading a penalty shoot-out and also got knocked out the Scottish Cup by a team from a town with a population smaller than the year of our formation.

Nobody as far as I'm aware. A load of complete shite released, but we all look forward to them being replaced by injury-prone players in their mid-thirties on three-year contracts.

Have Hearts become Aberdeen?

Awarding this retrospectively, who would get it each season since year sevco?

I had a go, but struggled with 2016-17 and 2017-18 as can't remember too much about them.  I put Brechin for an entire season without a win, but I'm not sure they should get it as it was a brilliant over-achievement getting to the championship in the first place.  Not sure if Utd did enough either:

2020-21 Celtic

2019-20 Hearts

2018-19 Falkirk

2017-18 Brechin City ?

2016-17 Dundee United ?

2015-16 Rangers

2014-15 Rangers

2013-14 Hibs

2012-13 Rangers

2011-12 Rangers

I think we have to be a pretty solid shout for 2016/17 and 2017/18.  The close season in 2017 was very much our banter era, when we got relegated, released a load of players and staff via voicemail, went through about three chairman, sacked our social media guy for liking pornography and recruited a new team partially from YouTube.

Fair chance it will be the Dons but the real banter will kick off when the Falkirk Variation of Covid 19 (yet to happen but it's coming) kicks in after 22 games played; Aberdeen are bottom of the division when fitba is cancelled and the SPFL votes for no relegation due to curtailed season. Happy days.

Depends what you mean by entitlement.

When people say that they generally just mean a club's support has a minimum level of expectation. I don't think it's unreasonable for supporters of Hearts, Hibs, or Aberdeen to expect their sides to generally be in the top half of the Premiership, given the resources the clubs have. If that's entitlement, so be it.

But let's say Motherwell were relegated to League One. Their fans would perceive that to be below their minimum expectations and would be annoyed. Would that make them entitled? Do you only become entitled when under-achieving?

Semantics, I suppose, but just seems a pretty loaded word to describe something that applies to every football club on the planet.

There’s a pretty fine line between expectation/ambition and entitlement/delusion, and it’s all in the eye of the beholder. Lots of folk in the Scottish media thought that if an Aberdeen fan didn’t think mcinnes was doing an amazing job then they were entitled.

Still, I think hearts, Aberdeen etc probably do have a decent percentage that fall into the ‘entitled’ side of the margin.

Thanks.

Man, the way the last few weeks has gone, this has Celtic and/or Dundee United written all over it, right?
