Cup of the South 2021-22

Recommended Posts

South Challenge Cup entry swells to an enormous 161 clubs. Go back 4yrs and this cup had 43 entrants.

There are 33 ties & 95 byes in R1 - then 'Last 128' in R2. However due to the national emergency the opening 2 rounds are regionalised into 4 zones.

East clubs from Fife, Perthshire, Clackmannanshire and Falkirk - plus Linlithgow - find themself placed into North-East Zone alongside clubs in North Lanarkshire. All the others from across the Lothians, Borders and Northumberland find themself in South-East Zone. In effect the South-West Zone amounts to South Lanarkshire, East + South Ayrshire plus Dumfries & Galloway; the North-West Zone amounts to the rest of Strathclyde.

North-East clubs could meet the likes of Bo'ness Utd, East Stirlingshire, Cumbernauld Utd and Kirkintilloch Rob Roy... South-East clubs could meet the likes of Civil Service, Spartans, Bonnyrigg, Gala and Berwick. There could also be plenty derbies thrown-up. I'd particularly like to see a Bo'ness derby, a Berwick derby or a Cumbernauld derby.

Draw is Friday at 7pm.

Most teams will get a bye in R1. Win in R2 and they're into all-in R3 - the 'Last 64' - where opponents from the Glasgow area, Ayrshire, Dumfries & Galloway and even Campbeltown in Argyll could await.

I suppose it makes financial sense to have the South Cup early rounds regional but you miss the randomness of the Scottish Junior Cup- for example while the treasurer groaned Dunbar fans over the years "enjoyed" trips to Craigmark, Lugar, Saltcoats, Stonehaven, Culter, Ardrossan, Ardeer and Burghead to play RAF Lossiemouth.

It does seem to just be a one season solution. Let's face it they tried to play an all-in competition BCDs last season. It's not like they're feart of a bit of travel.

Would it not be sensible for the mods to combine the separate threads into a single one in the cups section?

That was tried a few years ago (granted before West came on scene) but hardly anyone posted in it. You get threads in each sub-forum about the Scottish Cup, plus even the League and Tunnocks cups, so this isn't much different?

Particularly given R1 + R2 are regionalised this season (e.g. East clubs only feature in NE + SE... South clubs only in SW...).

Biggest senior cup draw since 1893-94... only took 90mins...

Do you know how many more clubs are needed next season to become the biggest senior draw in Scottish football history?

13

= 174

EDIT: With an entry of 161 clubs tonight was 6th biggest in history... surpassed only by Scottish Cup R1 in 1890-91 (173 clubs); Scottish Cup Preliminary R1 in 1891-92 (167 clubs); Scottish Cup R1 in 1888-89 (164 clubs); Scottish Cup Prelimininary R1 in 1892-93 and 1893-94 (162 clubs).

So not very far to go and could be biggest ever.

In reality tonight probably was by far the biggest ever if you consider R1 + R2 were drawn together - 97 ties is like 194 clubs - which I doubt they did in Victorian times.

Tasty. Needle!

Omitting cities and short-term groundshares by my reckoning can get derbies in Berwick, Bo'ness, Perth, Cumbernauld, Clydebank, East Kilbride, Paisley, Irvine or Dumfries.

Think Easthouses probably counts as part of Dalkeith? Pumpherston and Livingston might be another given the way the new town swallowed up the former.
