Scottish Football Clubs by Population

Couldn't find old thread.

Felt like an update was due: pyramid expansion, Brechin's relegation etc.

Not included North Caledonian/North Junior/Midland clubs until matters confirmed up there.

Most groundsharers listed under their true hometowns.

SPFL = highlighted.

Figures are for localities in last census.

It appears Erskine, Helensburgh, Milngavie, Giffnock, Clarkston and Bonnybridge are now the biggest places without a team in the pyramid.

Entry of Campbeltown to next season's West of Scotland League means every mainland local authority area is now represented. Orkney will also join the party - if North Caledonian joins up under HL.

Syngenta, although traditionally a Grangemouth team, are playing at Stenhousemuir next season. So Grangemouth with no club again - and presumably the biggest town without a side.

I've classed clubs like that - who may move on again in X years? - alongside their traditional home e.g. Rossvale as Bishopbriggs not Glasgow; St Cadocs as Newton Mearns not Glasgow; Edinburgh South as Edinburgh not Dalkeith; and so on... In only a few years Syngenta has played from (or proposed to play from) Grangemouth Athletics Stadium, Dunipace, Little Kerse in Falkirk, and now Stenhousemuir.

Kirkintilloch (at Cumbernauld Utd) are groundsharing while a new ground is being built but again tabulated under actual hometown not temporary stop.

Caledonian Braves and BSCG are more awkward... Motherwell and Alloa respectively.

Who plays at that ground in Grangemouth with three lovely stands?

I had a particularly boring period at work this week doing training so made a big list of all the towns in Scotland and all the clubs in the pyramid and came up with an ugly spreadsheet for you all to enjoy

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/16j3XFB0PfrVsKj3k_8eBzLCVOE5mh3-ZQiYvlUxzoXs/edit?usp=sharing

Let me know if ye spot any obvious mistakes

Lochar Thistle don't play in Locharbriggs. They play in Lochside at the new school that opened

you missed Cove for Aberdeen.

I used the Gazetter for population figures and it kept Cove Bay separate from Aberdeen so I did too

Falkirk and East Stirlingshire play their home games in Grangemouth.

Mentioned in the notes. I've kept teams to where their 'spiritual' home is. Despite them both playing in Grangemouth they're Falkirk teams. It's why Yoker are under Glesga and Clydebank under Clydebank despite playing at the same stadium.

As above. Aren't they originally from Locharbriggs?

They formed as an amatuer team in Locharbriggs but when they joined the SOS they originally played at Max High school (also in Lochside) before moving to their new location so they have never played a senior game in Locharbriggs.

Personally I would say they are from Lochside but its down to your interpretation

Broughty Ferry is in Dundee.

It's no more independent of Dundee than Lochee and even if it was Broughty Athletic play in Douglas anyway.

Again the population stats listed it as separate even if it's within the City of Dundee. Carmunnock in Glesga is the same.

Fair enough but Broughty Athletic have never played in Broughty Ferry.

They moved to the current ground, over a mile from the Ferry, in 1951 having rebranded from Broughty Ex Servicemen.

IMO they are clearly a Dundee team although @Jimi Shandrix will know better than me if they draw support from Balgillo Rd or Balunie Ave

Whilst it is true that they don't play in Broughty Ferry, technically they are about 25 yards from the Ferry, the cut off between the Ferry and Dundee being the Arbroath Road. Support seems to come from both the Ferry and Douglas.

It's fine, I'm boring myself here.

This is exactly the sort of pedantic inconsequential minutiae I'm all about.
