SPFL Trust Trophy (aka Challenge Cup)

I figured the bracket is basically there due to COVID concerns more than anything. In case of any cancellations the tournament can progress without being held up.

You can draw multiple rounds of a cup without using tennis-style bracketing... you can use tennis-style bracketing but still draw (or alternate) home advantage. Doubt you'll see this approach used in League or Scottish cups.

It also means no further draws getting coverage for the sponsor. However as it's their own Trust not a commercial company that's presumably less of an issue.

They've  tried hard to make this cup seem exciting /  interesting, changes galore again. Why not just keep the Scottish Cup and the the Premier Sports thing ? Be preferable to have some more league games tbh. Can't imagine many fans will bother to turn up, like the Mickey Mouse cup down south.

Some of the "changes galore" are precisely what have diminished its reputation... particularly admitting B teams.

There's a place for a knockout cup for lower league clubs especially as it's almost impossible for smaller clubs to get out of the League Cup groups. (Since they were introduced you've basically seen 1 part-time and/or SPFL1 club manage it each season). Otherwise it's just the Scottish Cup. Nobody would want to play 44/45 league games either.

  • 2 weeks later...

Surely the B-teams should've had to opt in/out before the draw?

Albion Rovers and Stirling Albion (respectively 5th and 7th in SPFL2) now get byes to R2 while about a dozen clubs placed above them must contest R1.

EDIT: Most ties confirmed for Tuesday 10th August... but Brechin v Buckie, Dumbarton v Rangers B, Celtic B v Annan, Broomhill v Clyde and Falkirk v East Kilbride are on Wednesday 11th (this was inevitable in a couple of cases as Rangers B v East Kilbride meet in league on preceding Sunday).

Edinburgh City v Hearts B is delayed 1 week until Tuesday 17th August. This will be as Spartans and LTHV have home ties in the East of Scotland Qualifying Cup on Tuesday 10th and Wednesday 11th.

Celtic B v Annan is at Airdrie. Hibs B v Elgin venue still unconfirmed.
