Exciting last end in prospect.....Turkey win Scotland go to the Olympics.....Japan steal and they go and we have a play-off tomorrow morning.  Would imagine Eve and team staying back to watch this.

Wow....thats only 9 weeks ago....when qualification for Beijing was far from certain.

Scottish championships start tomorrow in Dumfries. Both the men’s and women’s competitions are six team affairs and will start with a double round robin played from Monday to Friday (two games each per day)

The top four men and women teams then advance to a slightly unusual “page playoff system”:

- Top ranked team plays the second ranked team with the winner going to the final.
- Team 3 plays Team 4 with the winner bring eliminated

- Loser of the 1/2 game plays the winner of the 3/4 game for a place in the final

My preview:

Mens:

Olympic alternate Ross Whyte’s team are world ranked 11 rightly start as favourites, but they are without their skip for the first few games as he returns from Beijing and gets over the jet lag. He will be replaced by their coach Greg Drummond, but the team will be keen not to let Whyte’s absence lead to a slow start.

Most likely to join them in the final will be Ross Paterson rink, ranked 24th in the world. They are the only rink in the tournament that are part of the elite curling programme, but their form hasn’t been great this season.

Team James Craik are a promising young team ranked at world number 79. So are team Cameron Bryce (ranked 87) and team Mark Watt (ranked 110) and finally the newly formed team Jack Strawhorn (ranked 187)

Womens

The favourites will be 58th ranked team Rebecca Morrison, formed from the four players who narrowly missed out on Olympic selection.

Amy MacDonald (92), Fay Henderson (101) and Beth Farmer (105) are exciting young teams who will have hopes to at least make the playoffs.

Lucy Blair (155) and unranked Jenni Cannon complete the line up.

Prior to 2019 there was a rule that in non-Olympic years the winners of this tournament go to the world championship (in Olympic years they’d play best of 3 against the Olympic team). Nowadays the WC team is hand picked but if Mouat/Muirhead need a rest then maybe the winners of this will be selected.

Favourites Rebecca Morrison and Beijing silver medalist Ross Whyte boon their places in the respective Scottish finals by winning the page 1-2 playoff games.

Morrison defeated Fay Henderson, who gets a second bite of the cherry against Amy MacDonald at 7pm tonight. The winner of that will face Morrison for the title at 4pm tomorrow.

On the men’s side Ross Whyte won the 1-2 page playoff against namesake Ross Paterson. Paterson’s second bite of the cherry comes against James Craik at 7pm tonight, with the winner facing Whyte’s rink for the Scottish men’s title at 11am tomorrow.

Disastrous start to the women’s worlds for Scotland. Skip Rebecca Morrison tested positive for covid, so will miss at least the first five days. She was initially replaced by alternate player Fay Henderson, but Henderson also tested positive and is out of the tournament altogether.

Beth Farmer was called to fly out to Canada at short notice to replace Henderson, but hadn’t arrived in time to clear covid protocols before the first game, meaning they had to play with only 3 players (Gina Aitken skipped the team, and then there are two Sophies: Sinclair and Jackson)

They opened against defending world champions Switzerland overnight and were beaten 12-1.

Scotland have now withdrawn from the world championships after two more positive tests.

sorry, just noticed this after i posted the same.

I was really disappointed that Eve's rink werent given the chance in the first place.  However, the Worlds did seem a bit like after the lord mayors show post Olympic success.

Played my last match of the season last night...a good win in the eigth and last end.  There is another match next Tuesday but golf takes over now I am afraid. There were only two matches on (8.30pm start) and I have to say it was a little intimidating having a former world champion skip playing on the next sheet - Jackie Lockhart.......she played a couple of sensational shots that proved she knows exactly what she is talking about when commentating on the Olympics.

Mens world championships begins in Las Vegas on Saturday - looking forward to it but was really hoping team Mouat would have had the chance to become world champs.

After a shaky start Scotland lie in joint second (5 way tie) after two good wins yesterday.  Got a couple of matches later today v USA and Finland....win them both and they are in a very strong position.  Only Canada winning all their matches.

Yes, in a really good position after a stuttering start.  Only one game today.  Need to win next two (which they should v Czechs and Netherlands) really as last three matches against the other teams in top four (Canada, Sweden and Switzerland)  Canada play Sweden today so it will be interesting to see if the Canadians retain their 100% record.

Think third would be a good result here, the Canadians and Swedes are the two main countries fielding their full strength Olympic teams so matching them could be tough. However, getting a WC bronze with effectively Scotland’s second choice rink would be a great sign for strength and depth.
