They at least had the excuse of there not being a senior league in their area that would accept them.

They've always had the Highland League. They never tried again after they weren't elected over a decade ago. Even turned down an invite the season after Cove went up. Golspie in a similar situation. Not really an issue now when NRJFA and NCL come on board officially.

IIRC at the time of them getting licensed their black-balling was still fresh, but yes, they subsequently could certainly have joined.

If Bonnyton get a mention. East Kilbride probably deserve one as well. They pursued senior football for the town and were willing to commit to the SoSFL to get the ball rolling. Setting an example that the likes of BSC Glasgow and Cumbernauld Colts would follow.

Could add a historical footnote that the then East Kilbride Development Corporation who ran the town put the boot into Senior football coming to EK. They didn't want any hassle in EK Dodgy.

They hunted the idea of Clyde moving there as far back as the 1970s.

There was even talk at one point of trying to get EK Thistle to go Senior.

You could write a book on the twists & turns that got us here.

David Taylor's cup introduction. Gretna and Annan. 'Highland + Lowland Regional Leagues'. Founding of LL at time of SPL-SFL merger. Promulgation of the Tay Bridge Line. SJFA keeping out and pushing a 'Superduperleague'. Edinburgh City going up. Kelty taking plunge. Dozen more following with EOSL deciding to run 2 conferences - dozen more joining them a month later with EOSL tweaking to 3 conferences. Junior football in Lothian and Fife collapsing over 3 years. SJFA trying to get West and rump East regions in under LL. Some clubs in West breaking ranks for a WOSL; every West club ultimately leaving. Remnant juniors in West Lothian going east on promulgation of the Salt & Sauce Line. North Caley negotiating with HL. North Juniors following suit. Promulgation of the Dram Line. Tayside juniors forming a Midland League under HL.

Would take it back as far as the failed attempt at a Scottish Super League in 1993 (a thread of its own, that one) which ultimately led to four leagues of 10 shortly after and the introduction of Ross County and Inverness, and the election of Elgin and Peterhead a few years down the line.

Only 28 years to get this far. And folk say Scottish football is slow to change.

Pity Livingston Development Corporation didn't take the same attitude as East Kilbride...
