greenockraver
Fifa and Uefa have been reportedly working with the idea of banning players of clubs who signed the breakaway plan for the proposed european super league from playing for their international teams with immediate effect. Disaster if this happens however we would be far from the worst hit nation

gannonball
No chance they will do this. Sponsors etc will go mental if the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo aren’t in it.

Big debate going on in Portugal about whether he even starts now. Consensus seems to be they're better without him. He's just a poacher now who contributes nothing off the ball. -
Gordopolis
Yeah that'd hurt Uefa and Euro 2020 waaaaaaay more than it'd hurt the breakaway clubs. Not a chance it'll happen. Both sides are posturing here - with the ESL clubs in the strongest position. It'll end up with some form of compromise, possibly with the ESL opening up a limited promotion/relegation spot or two in return for being allowed to complete this smash & grab job with no further penalty.

archieduke
In the slim chance this does happen at least Steve Clarke has a genuine excuse for not taking Billy Gilmour to the Euros.
craigkillie
if you believe it you are a sun reader who also enjoys reading the gossip columns. The president of UEFA spoke about banning players from international competitions this afternoon, it's not some made up story.I can't see it applying to Euro 2020, because the Super League wouldn't have even started by then and the players haven't made any sort of active decision to take part in it.If this rumbles on though, I genuinely do expect those players to be prevented from playing from August onwards. I don't think it's an empty threat at all.

As Portugal kick off their 2022 World Cup qualifying campaign against Azerbaijan on Wednesday, the debate over whether what Ronaldo offers in terms of goals makes up for what he doesn't off the ball shows no sign of slowing down.

If this forum is anything to go by then a sizable chunk of the national team's fans will be absolute wallopers that genuinely don't understand the difference between a football and a grapefruit. Half the guys on here seem to think the goals move, ken.

Ronaldo is just a poacher who contributes nothing off the ball now. That's just a fact, anyone disputing that clearly hasn't watched him for about five years.

When his team don't have the ball he's a passenger, and even when they do he doesn't get involved in the build-up he's a poacher who positions himself to finish chances. His record with Juve shows he's still doing that very well, and to have the top scorer in the history of the game would be a great option off the bench if you need a goal. But a lot of people in Portugal now believe they're better if he doesn't start, with far more mobility and fluidity.
