Its quite funny that the clubs have been falling over themselves to spout pish all through the pandemic about how important the fans are, wholst clearly they have been doing their sums to make sure theres money in completely fucking their fans off

It would be hilarious if the dirty dozen discovered that they were obliged to move lock, stock and barrel to pre-arranged host cities in the mid-west of the USA for what is effectively a third tier of the MLS.

I don’t understand the wailing and gnashing of teeth. This was inevitable. The giant clubs in Europe like Man City are paying wages in the hundreds of millions a season to players who might win the league. In England the difference financially in payouts between the big six and the bottom six is relatively small. These clubs. Are owned by countries and billionaires and want to Hoover up as much cash as possible. A league with Real Madrid, Barca etc will generate huge TV revenues as opposed to City vs Burnley for example.
Unfortunately the bigot brothers are small fry and will not be considered for this.
As it will make not one iota of difference to St Mirren, I say bring it on

Every detrimental change to the Champions League made by UEFA has been on the back of the “elite clubs” threatening to walk.

The only pity is I can't like this post twice - some sorta compromise will emerge favouring the elite clubs even more.

These guys are genuinely so entrenched in their little boardroom bubble that they would be confused at the idea that quotes like ‘football without fans is nothing’ are anything more than a marketing slogan.

There is a good chance to stop it with all fans, governments, UEFA, FIFA and legacy media all against it. They may have overplayed their hand. Bayern won't be able to join even if their senior people want to and I expect to see big protests in Liverpool and Manchester.

I agree, but not about fans. For that 12 clubs the actual match-going fans, the 60-100,000 or so that regularly or occasionally attend matches, are worth far less than the two or three million that never go, or the fans of other clubs or none that will watch their matches against other big teams.

If the rest of the footballing world holds the line then they can definitely prevent this from happening, but the real fans are just bystanders at this show.

Looking forward to the clips of Tyler and Neville moaning about the ESL being played back at them when Sky pay the equivalent of the GDP of a small country to show it.

It's not the same thing though, is it? 49 different clubs have had at least a season in the EPL - that more than half of all the clubs in the top four divisions. Only 16 other clubs have played in the English top flight but not the EPL, and only 11 since WW2. When they broke away all places were on merit and they've had 3 up, 3 down throughout.

Money has obviously unbalanced the Englsih game but it definitely hasn't made it a closed shop. Leicester and West Ham are still in the top 4 with 6 games left to play.

Astonished that the English media are so astonished by this tbh.

UEFA, the premier league etc created this monster. They sent a clear message that football was about nothing more than making money so this scorned lover act is quite hard to relate to.

Of course this is a fucking travesty for football if/when it happens but it’s just the end game of a journey that started decades ago. If you were wanking over the champions league a week ago and are horrified at the news yesterday then you haven’t been paying attention.

I don't think you can compare the CL, however unbalanced, with a literal closed shop. Half of those 12 clubs are on a CL appearance run of just 4 years or less. We've seen clubs like BATE Borisov, Cluj and Red Star Belgrade in the CL in recent years, clubs that don't even have the resources of the OF. UEFA have bent over backwards to accommodate the big clubs, to prevent a breakaway, which is probably why they're so bloody angry now.

I wonder which giants of the game are left now to make up the numbers - Spartak Moscow? PSV? FC Basel?

If Kelty win the playoffs, the HL might not be all that keen on an extra week of fixtures and might prefer it if Brechin fill the vacancy.  It might get in the way of potential Forfarshire Cup fixtures though, and midweek fixtures in places like Milan won't be ideal for players with work the next day, so we might not be able to commit.
