Utterly surreal. Obviously though "The Defiant Ones" is the correct answer to this thread. The revalation that Death Row Records/2pac/Dr. Dre/Snoop/West Coast Hip Hop only happened on the scale it did thanks to Nine Inch Nails is quite the plot-twist. The Bros one is great, although it's clearly creeping into the Mockumentary category.
capt_oats
Feels like I mentioned these in another thread a while ago...anyway: +1 on Breadcrumb Trail. 1991: The Year Punk Broke is probably the first one that pops into my head with any "best music documentary" question. The Punk Singer is good as well. Edited March 30, 2022 by capt_oats
Lofarl
Anton Newcombe is pretty active on Twitter. He’s fair mellowed out. Lives in Berlin and uploads music demos a lot. I quite like that in a musician to hear works progress.

I've heard folk say that DIG makes Newcombe seem far worse than he actually is or was at the time - fair play of he's a bit more chill these days. tommyboy
Laurel Canyon,a two part documentary which 'tells the story of the idyllic Hollywood Hills community and the famed musicians who made history there'. Sadly,it became less idyllic after Charlie Manson and his followers moved in.
Lofarl
Sound City by Dave Grohl is a pretty decent doc. Also Rick Beato on youtube's what makes this song great is a pretty good little channel to watch. You learn a fair bit about music production.

One of my proudest moments was training a young German guy last year, he was a music student who specialised in bass guitar, So we began chatting about music I joked that I was a big fan of Schlager music then I mentioned the Krautrock scene but called it Kosmische Musik because i wasn't sure how the word Kraut would be received, i sent him a few tunes by Neu and just as i was about to go to bed i received loads of WhatsApp messages from him declaring his love for Kosmische Musik. He moved back to Germany recently and I like to think he's turning all his mates onto Krautrock.
Jimi Shandrix
"30 Century Man", documenting the career of Scott Walker is a fascinating hour and a half. As well as actually getting to hear the man himself speaking (a rarity), there is a decent array of talking heads including David Bowie, Brian Eno and Jarvis Cocker as well as some great footage from when he was one of the biggest stars in the world. Highlights include watching Scott punching his meat (not a euphemism) during recording sessions for "The Drift" and the interviewer asking him why he doesn't produce something more akin to his 60's heyday to which a puzzled Scott deadpans "why, I've done that".

Rick Beato is fantastic, has an insane knowledge on production and writing. A good music doc I watched on Netflix a while back was Artifact. It's about 30 seconds to Mars and their fight against their label. Gives a good insight into how the major labels bend the artists over even if Jared Leto can come across a little preachy.
GNU_Linux
Until The Light Takes Us is by far the best piece on the 2nd wave Norwegian Black Metal scene. There's a surreal as all hell bit where neo-nazi & convicted murder Varg Vikernes gives insight into how various people within the scene like their cornflakes.

Latino Lover
Only knew a few inxs songs but mystify about Michael hutchence is absolutely amazing and pretty emotional. There’s a bit where you can literally see his heart break, Ralph wiggum style, and it will ensure you will dislike Noel Gallagher even if for some reason you didn’t previously. westway to the world about the clash is another good one from the top of my head.
