Footballers who aren't nice people

Recommended Posts

I used to work in Moshulu nightclub in Aberdeen  as a student in the early 2000’s

Before it went all goth it was a fairly normal nightclub.

The Aberdeen players came in a lot, usual arsehole big time Charlie behaviour. However Hicham Zerouali would stand at the end of the bar drinking orange juices all night, chatting away to the bar staff, generally looking bored and embarrassed at the antics of his teammates.  Really genuinely nice guy.

The Nigeria national team also had an after game party there after a friendly with Scotland at Pittodrie.

Nwankwo Kanu was the biggest arsehole I have ever met in my life.  Rude to everyone he spoke to all night , including staff and other customers. Total bell end.

In the area where I live, also lives Robbie Keane, and he has a reputation for being very friendly and laid back. I haven't met him, but saw him once from afar, close enough to see that he had kind eyes.

Bertie Peacock was a decent man. As was his son, Russell.

Felix Healy had a fear of flying so travelled back after the Spurs ECWC game in 1982 on the train/boat with us. Rooked us at cards, the so and so. Nice fella, all the same.

Was that Spurs v Coleraine? Do you support Coleraine? I was a little confused with that second sentence but only recently became aware of Felix Healy when I was watching Derry City v Benfica on YouTube from an 1989 edition of Sportsnight.

Felix Healy was keen to leave after the match as he playing the role of Danny Zuko in a stage version of Grease at the Waterside Theatre

When I worked at a cinema in Dundee, Cammy Kerr, Willo Flood and Stevie May were in from time to time.

All really polite ordinary guys, Flood especially seemed a lovely bloke.

As for dickhead footballers, some of my pals and I came across James Maddison in a nightclub in Aberdeen, and he was a total cock. "I'm richer than you" and all that kind of patter.

Maybe he's older and wiser now, but he was certainly a fucking knob then.

Don't think Maddison was well liked in the dressing room either.

Remember Shay Logan doing a 'teammates' segment for RedTV and for every question he was 'x is a great lad, good laugh. Y is quiet but such a nice guy etc'. Then came onto Maddison and he said 'well, we've got to remember he's just a young guy...' then tailed off,

Tommy Gemmell good guy,Bertie Auld good guy,Pat Nevin w**k,Danny McGrain good guy,Barry Ferguson good guy,Jorg Albertz w**k.

I was at a sportsman’s dinner where Tommy Gemmell was speaking. Our group was mainly Killie fans but there were some Celtic and Rangers fans.  The Rangers fans were half jokingly saying that as soon Gemmell came on they would go to the quiet room so they didn’t need to listen to him.

As soon as he started speaking, especially about the Lisbon Lions, the whole bowling club, including the previous mentioned Rangers  fans hung on his every word, intensely. Although it was a long time ago and we were all steaming and I can’t really remember what he said except that he came across really well and I think he got cheered at the end. Even the die hard Rangers fans we were with said afterwards that they liked him.

There's a whole thread on Reddit dedicated to Maddison's 'antics'. Brilliant player, but if even half of them are true then he is - or perhaps was - a total dick.

Yes, yes.

Felix is a talented singer by all accounts, must be knocking on a bit now, like myself.

ETA: He's 65, younger than I am. Hope he's in better shape than I am.

When I left school, I served my time as a Floorlayer, and the company I worked for use to do some of the Aberdeen players. We were working in one well known player's house fitting the bedroom carpet of his very young son, we were moving the bed out of the room, so lifted the mattress up and there lay a folded gimp porn mag which  I assume was the player's hiding spot.

I'll leave the player's name out but he didn't cover himself in glory years later in another incident and acted like a bit of a twat, although I didn't meet him that day I worked in his house.

However, I also worked in Alex McLeish's house and he was a complete gentleman and gave us a tip for having to empty the room we working in.

I also worked in Roy Aitken's who, if i remember correctly, son had a blue carpet fitted because he was an Oldco fan.

I also worked in Neil Cooper's (the reserve team manager, gentleman who gave us a beer on a very warm day), Willie Miller (his wife took charge of dealing with us which I got the impression wasn't unusual), and Ray MacKinnon's flat (can't remember anything about him)

None of the people mentioned by name are the unidentified person.

Just seems like a caricature of what happens to teenage guys that are suddenly handed huge sums of money for kicking a football around.

I'd like to think now or in the future he is pretty ashamed/cringes at how he behaved.

I met Andy Goram in a Romanian pub where Rangers fans had gathered prior to a champions league game away against Unirea Urziceni. He was nice enough with the fans, having photos taken and chatting away but was definitely a bit arrogant when it came to the staff. Clicking his fingers to get their attention to take his order whilst not getting up from his seat and no please or thank yous. He did tip them very well though so he wasn’t a complete dick at least.

Randomly bumped into Benni McCarthy in a night club in Edinburgh. I think he was coaching at Hibs at the time and he was very nice and took time to chat away without it seeming like it was a chore.

Also ended up in a pub in Prague while on a stag do and Ricky Foster was there but he seemed quite quiet so no real opinion on him other than never forgiving him for a shocking miss against Valencia.

I'm sure @Merkland Red was telling me Scott Vernon is surprisingly a total arsehole.

The only time I've personally come across them has been in Aberdeen on a Saturday night so probably not the best gauge. Not seen anything particularly bad other than Lee Miller dressed like a total fanny.

Aye, indeed.
