and conveniently this has become the story rather than the ludicrous immigration policy.  If only good at one thing, the right wing press (pretty much all the press) are expert at diverting attention away from real issues

Tv news is the worst for this. The story becomes the story and getting talking heads on from opposite sides to talk about the reporting takes precedence over asking any meaningful questions of the people proposing or affected by the policy.

I appreciate that you’re being all reconciliatory here but a “remainer” is someone who wanted the UK to remain in the EU.

As we are no longer in the EU we can’t possibly remain there now.

If people want to get all bent out of shape about people who are advocating rejoining the EU then they’ll have to come up with some better terminology to describe these people.

Joiners.

What should be headline topic rather than MOTD.

Millions of people would just listen to that and say, "this confirms that we need to stop adhering to human rights legislation". Maybe they already have.

They won't change their minds until the safeguards against tyranny are removed and they find the rights of their family and friends being infringed upon. People never do. Some won't even then, so long as they personally aren't affected.

"adhering to human rights legislation" is just the sort of Liberal big wordyness that Tory voters hate. You're probably one of those Lefty Lawyers.

His point about it being a deflection from the government’s disastrous domestic record is made more clearly and more succinctly than any opposition politician I have heard.

Andrew Neil skewered poor Victoria Atkins on his Channel Four show tonight, so much so that she was reduced to a nervous giggle.

All he had to do was research some figures that the viewer might've expected her to be able to defend and of course she couldn't.

I almost sympathised.

First budget leak is a nice bit of tax relief for millionaires.

The people's party

I assume they know they're f'd in the next election so will squeeze every last drop out for them and their mates. That trickle down effect will kick in this time, surely?

As there isn't a thread that includes "Some Tories are off their nut" in the title, I'll post this story here.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-cornwall-47572133

I mean, really....

"An MP has been ridiculed on social media after he suggested all knives should be fitted with GPS trackers.

Scott Mann, Conservative MP for North Cornwall, said on Twitter there should be a national database "like we do with guns".

His tweet has attracted more than 3,600 comments, with some saying Mr Mann was "not the sharpest knife in the drawer".

Ooft.

Well, this is some top Tory work right here. Of all the things that could be done to help millions suffering in the middle of a cost of living crisis, this:

"Jeremy Hunt defends pension tax giveaway for rich, saying it will lead to people getting NHS operations more quickly."

Never mind that his argument makes absolutely no sense,

'The Office for Budget Responsibility said yesterday the policy would only lead to an extra 15,000 people staying in work. When this figure was put to Hunt, he said he did not accept it."

Tories gonna Tory.

Is this the "your betters will spend this money on private healthcare and leave more NHS appointments available for society's rubbish" idea beloved of parody accounts like Dawson Park Boy?

"More rigorous application of the sanction regime"

Jesus, that's going to be fun. The proposed changes to Limited Capability for Work elements are also pretty concerning.

I see that the DWP have been ordered to release their own internal research that outlined how benefits sanctions are counterproductive, add extra expense, and increase unemployment. That's before you get into the morality of deliberately punishing people for being poor, which isn't a consideration for psychopaths.

No doubt you're aware that the government's been fighting against releasing it for years - they needn't worry, as egregious cruelty is enough of a vote-winner now that it'll probably give them a wee bump in the polls.

They've been ordered to release info on many occasions and just point blank refused with absolutely no repercussions at all 😂

You kinda have to admire the willingness to flaunt their disregard for conventions that were clearly never enforceable in the first place. I take it they've decided that they're entering the authoritarian end game, so broader public opinion isn't going to matter for much longer.

Has this been mentioned yet? Bunch of troublemaking pinkos whining about "civic freedoms" being eroded in the UK. You have the "right" to work for our benefit until you die, and be grateful for what we allow you.

If you give a billionaire a million pound in tax breaks (at the expense of those scraping by on minimum wage) it will "incentivize" them to do something useful with that million that they won't even notice in their offshore bank account..... or something.
