Marten
With all the backlash the LL has been getting, this is the perfect moment to put a stop to this nonsense and start cleaning up their image. Undoubtedly, instead they'll even make more of a shambles of this.
FairWeatherFan
Tons of fun for Cowdenbeath & Darvel/Tranent to be dumped into.

Is this written down somewhere? Think it goes back to when the league was launched and is still in their constitution. The HL were supposed to be fixed at 16 as well according to the SFA but had more leverage on the issue at the time as a pre-existing league when they adopted a bit of a take us all or we're no daein it approach to the pyramid.

The maximum number of clubs will normally be sixteen (16) but may be increased temporarily to a maximum of eighteen (18) at the sole discretion of the Board.

It's the supposed mandate that the SFA will not allow for it to be changed. The Lowland League have been able to change plenty of rules in the past after all. Even with the creation of the Highland League Playoff the SFA hasn't forced the Highland League to reduce to 16. Why then wouldn't the Lowland League seek parity? It's not like lack of floodlights is an issue anymore.
craigkillie
The SFA certainly didn't block them from having a 17 team league in 2020/21 when Bo'ness were promoted.

As floodlights are a licensing requirement now, it's no problem to have more than 16. I wonder if they've ever seriously asked the SFA if they could expand to 18. After all, they could use the HL as an example...
invergowrie arab
It's weasel words. They are bound in as much as they themselves have committed to that to the SFA It's obvious bollocks anyway as the SFA have to provide the same officals, disciplinary etc for a Stirling Uni v Celtic B Fixture as they would have to provide for Stirling Uni v Tranent.

Burnieman
So, why would the SFA be remotely bothered if the LL is 16/17/18/19/20, what's it to them?? They seem happy to allow the HL to operate with 18 clubs so the precedent is right in front of them. Is it perhaps they want to limit the amount of clubs with voting rights at SFA AGM, given that clubs below tier 5 - who are not historical members - do not have any voting rights?

Questions that I can’t answer, however the HL has a longer history and standing compared to the comparatively new LL, and perhaps the SFA saw their chance to impose their wishes on them from the outset?
Jimmy Shaker
The Highland League requested starting with 18 teams at the start of the pyramid talks, as that’s the size the league was at that point. Was pretty much the only condition/request the SHFL laid down at the time. It should, however, have just gone to sixteen and punted Fort William and Buckie Thistle, the former for being piddle and Buckie for not wanting anything to do with the pyramid.
AsimButtHitsASix
There was nowhere to punt the 'extra' HL teams at the time either as there was no pyramid below.

There may have been no pyramid, but there were other leagues available, one of them a senior league.
