Some twat on Talksport racist radio wanting english colts teams in the scottish league ffs

Would be some laugh putting Man City 'Colts' in the Premiership and watching them outspend the Old Firm to claim the title tbf.

That's certainly an alternative interpretation of "South of Scotland League".

Visions of Newcastle's Saudi owners buying Blue Star, moving them to the East of Scotland league, and watching the best young players in South America and Africa rolling through the East of Scotland league. "Gonzalez with his 8th goal of the day against Tweedmouth in the big derby match"

And they can actually do that if they wish.

It's the third decade of the 21st Century and still so much antagonism. It's as though some people are living in the past. It's really sad that there's so much hate still left in the system.

Time to heal old wounds not rub them with grit to keep them going.

The talented young footballers with SPFL clubs deserve to play at as high a level as their capabilities can achieve.

Those that have played so far this season in the Lowland League are not exactly being hammered. Neither have they gone round kicking their opponents in the air or causing mass outbreaks of vandalism and fighting at Lowland League grounds. They have, in fact, brought fans to games as most expected them to.

There are 3 basic complaints around 'B' teams of professional sides operating within the pyramid.

  1. They're trying to get parachuted in ahead of other clubs. Which is exactly what's happened with this one year trial and has seen both clubs try to politick their way into the SPFL once more.
  2. They won't bring the level of support that they claim. Which is exactly what's happened. They've brought 100s (low end) not 1,000s some were delusional enough to believe. And its little different than what a Talbot, Linlithgow, Pollok, Clydebank, Irvine Meadow and the like could add.
  3. They still won't promote from within. Charlie McCann, Juan Alegria, Bosun Lawal, and other teens shipped in from outside Scotland already on the books say hello. If they can't use their own youth prospects to compete in the Lowland League, it's only going to get worse the higher they go.

If they were that talented they'd be playing in the SPFL. Like a number of Celtic & Rangers players that would be eligible for the LL 'B' team but aren't playing in it.

And if they were really talented they wouldn't be playing in the SPFL. They'd be off elsewhere.

If they want to play at the highest level they should start at the the very bottom and work their way up.

Like any new team joining a league.

This. If anything, the shambles this season show that they don't add anything. Bin them for next season and don't ever let them come back.

That still shouldn't be allowed, having colts in the professional structure (even if they work their way up) still offers a massive advantage to the parent club.

To relax rules and allow this would mean something in it for the other 40 voting clubs. I'm yet to see a single good argument for other clubs voting on letting the Glasgow Derby Colts up the league. Arguments of "bigger crowds" and "prioritise and develop Scottish youngsters" have been completely blown apart by the Lowland League trial.

For me, the only way the needle can be moved on this is with rules forcing the issue of Scottish youth development while protecting other clubs.

- Colt squad sizes limited to around 22 players with a requirement of around 20 being club homegrown talent. Developed through the parent clubs youth structure at least three years before the players 18th birthday making Scotland eligible (regardless of nationality). This will stop the recruitment of promising young Columbian, American, Irish, English, etc talent bought in the summer before a league campaign. It also protects other Scottish clubs from losing their best players as the "club homegrown talent" rule would mean players raided from other youth academies wouldn't meet the squad rules unless signed before they turned 15.

- Maximum squad sizes at all youth levels, similar to above this will protect other clubs from losing the best young talent at a young age and will stop the stockpiling of young players by Celtic & Rangers meaning better distribution of youngsters and less players on books that likely won't make it as professional footballers, allowing them to focus on education and careers elsewhere.

- Rules on homegrown players in starting 11s of senior teams after a grace period. Say after five years, all Scottish clubs (with colts or otherwise) must play four players in their starting 11 that have been developed by the club (the actual club, not just any Scottish club) from youth. This will mean a complete re-focus on youth & the Glasgow derby putting their money where there mouth is with Scottish youth development. Basically "if you want Colts you can have them but it better work because you'll have to play a number of these players in senior games soon"

These points satisfied and I would warm to a colts proposal. Right now it's take, take, take and it has been in every version of the colts we have heard. Celtic & Rangers have not being willing to compromise one bit to date on player development rules to get Colts. If they say no to the above, the Colts idea needs to be permanently binned.

I don't get to see or read much news from up north, but was there any talk of other spfl clubs wanting their colts, youth, reserve teams to get into the spfl ? Would have thought having two more Old Firm sides in the league likely to upset other clubs. Non league clubs must have priority to climb the league's pyramid surely ?

ICT wanted to enter their youths into the HL. But that got banjoed.

You'd imagine if the SPFL offered places then a few teams would want to take them up on it (Aberdeen? Hearts? Hibs? DUFC?) but none have made any public noise since the Junior Bigots got a toehold in the LL.
