The Poisoned Chalice Ranking

A common but rarely qualified question: which job in Scottish football is really the most perilous gig for a manager? Which football club has gone through the most managers in the modern era and which clubs have proven to be the most gentle, glorified retirement homes?

The parameters for this obviously have to be set on an equal basis. For modernity and simplicity's sake, I'd use managerial posts held since the year 2000 as an objective benchmark: as that's one full generation to the present day.

A trickier and largely subjective element is how to judge interim management positions. I'd include any interim manager who either i) was kept in place beyond the reasonable needs of the recruitment process or ii) indicated their desire to be considered as a candidate for the vacant post.

So in the case of Greenock Morton, Anton McElhone would be included in the list because he was left (and confirmed) in interim charge from December 2020 until March this year; Joe McLaughlin would also qualify for the 2004-05 season because his caretaker role was openly considered as an audition for the vacant post at that time.

Whereas the Chris Millar/Jim McAlister effort at the end of the 18/19 season -  when Jonatan Johannson flounced off hours before kick-off - wouldn't count because it was a makeshift role with no desire to continue it going forward.

Let us begin.

Greenock Morton:

Billy Stark (2000)

Ian McCall (2000)

Allan Evans (2000–2001)

Ally Maxwell (2001)

Peter Cormack (2001–2002)

Dave McPherson (2002)

John McCormack (2002–2004)

Joe McLaughlin (2004)

Jim McInally (2004–2008)

Davie Irons (2008–2009)

James Grady (2009–2010)

Allan Moore (2010–2013)

Kenny Shiels (2013–2014)

Jim Duffy (2014–2018)

Ray McKinnon (2018)

Jonatan Johansson (2018–2019)

David Hopkin (2019–2020)

Anton McElhone (2020-21)

Gus MacPherson (2021–)

I'm quite possibly overlooking a couple of eligible interims as well, but that's a solid 19 managers at a single football club in just over 20 years to kick us off.

We're ruled out of the running in the 20 year stakes due mainly to settled tenures of Gus MacPherson (2003-2010) and Danny Lennon (2010-2014).

However between Danny Lennon leaving and Jim Goodwin joining, we were in serious revolving door territory.

From Lennon's last day on 12 May 2014 to Goodwin's first day on 28 June 2019 - a period of just over 5 years, Goodwin became the ninth person to take that role up full time.

1. Danny Lennon (Contract ended 12 May 2014)
2. Tommy Craig (May 2014 – December 2014)
3. Gary Teale (December 2014 – May 2015)
4. Ian Murray (May 2015 – December 2015)
5. Alex Rae (December 2015 – September 2016)
Not Included. Allan McManus - (September 2016 – October 2016) (Caretaker)
6. Jack Ross (October 2016 – May 2018)
7. Allan Stubbs (June 2018 – September 2018)
8. Oran Kearney (September 2018 – June 2019)
9. Jim Goodwin (Joined 28 June 2019)

But for the sake of adding us to your rankings, over the period of 21 years from 2000, then we will sit on 12 as we only had an additional 3 managers in the 2000s prior to Danny Lennon joining:

Tom Hendrie (1998-2002)
John Coughlin (2002-2003)
Gus MacPherson (2003-2010)

We had 4 managers in over 16 years from 1998 to 2014, and then twice as many as that in the following five years.

We're on 14, with 5 caretakers. Dodds did 1 game (which we won); Bowman had the longest caretaker reign in terms of time, but also only had 1 game (which we lost); Gordon Young won 2 and lost 1 after we had already been relegated; and Laurie Ellis had two caretaker gigs, winning 2 from 2, and losing 1 from 1 respectively.

1. Paul Sturrock (5 Sep 1998-7 Aug 2000)
2. Alex Smith (8 Aug 2000-7 Oct 2002)
3. Paul Hegarty (7 Oct 2002-30 Jan 2003)
4. Ian McCall (30 Jan 2003-14 Mar 2005)
5. Gordon Chisholm (14 Mar 2005-10 Jan 2006)
Billy Dodds (10 Jan 2006-16 Jan 2006)
6. Craig Brewster (16 Jan 2006-29 Oct 2006)
7. Craig Levein (30 Oct 2006-23 Dec 2009)
8. Peter Houston (26 Dec 2009-28 Jan 2013)
9. Jackie McNamara (30 Jan 2013-28 Sep 2015)
Dave Bowman (28 Sep 2015-14 Oct 2015)
10. Mixu Paatelainen (14 Oct 2015-4 May 2016)
Gordon Young  (5 May 2016-15 May 2016)
11.Ray McKinnon (16 May 2016-24 Oct 2017)
Laurie Ellis (24 Oct 2017-8 Nov 2017)
12. Csaba László (8 Nov 2017-30 Sep 2018)
Laurie Ellis (30 Sep 2018-8 Oct 2018)
13. Robbie Neilson (8 Oct 2018- 21 June 2020)
14. Micky Mellon (6 July 2020-Present)

If you extend it back a bit, since Jerry Kerr took over in 1959, we have had 19 permanent managers and 6 caretakers. Since Wee Jim retired in 1993, we have had 17 permanent managers and 6 caretakers (Ivan Golac, Gordon Wallace as caretaker, Billy Kirkwood, and Tommy McLean round out that list).

Whatever happened to Teale, he was a definite improvement on Craig and if Kenny McLean had not been sold on the last day of the Jan 2015 transfer window who knows? He kept us within touching distance of Well & County who were our fellow strugglers that season until a couple of heavy defeats against them  in H2H matches just prior to the split scuppered his chances of getting to rebuild in the Championship. I still felt he would get another gig somewhere but it just hasn't turned out that way for him.

It seems to be the way now that most clubs give new managers less than 2 seasons (length of their initial contract?) nowadays. Goodwin just coming up to  2 seasons with us is now in the top half of long serving managers. Obviously this is in poor taste but I reckon the recent restart of the roundabout is a sign that the worst of Covid is past and JG will move further up the long servers list before next season starts.

I wouldn't count the Alec Cleland period in charge but the rest were all permanent managers. We have stabilised considerably since Hopkin took charge but I imagine 20 managers will take some beating.

1, Bobby Williamson (1996-2002)
2, Jim Jefferies (2002-2010)
3. Jimmy Calderwood (2010)
4. Mixu Paatelainen (2010-11)
5. Kenny Shiels (2011-2013)
6. Allan Johnston (2013-2015)
7. Gary Locke (2015-2016)
8. Lee Clark (2016-2017)
9. Lee McCulloch (2017)
10. Steve Clarke (2017-2019)
11. Angelo Alessio (2019)
12. Alex Dyer (2019-2021)
13. Tommy Wright (2021-)

A fairly low number, but we only had two in the first decade and eleven in the second decade (twelve if you count Jefferies being in charge for about three days of the 2010s) which suggests an obvious trend. Hopefully Wright might stick around for a while if he does reasonably well (even if we go down).

3 managers managed 16 years between them, so the other 3 averaged 1 and a bit years each. I can imagine that's the pattern for the future.

Stunned Cooper and Simpson didn't get the gig full time with that caretaker record tbh.

Hearts under Vladimir Romanov were pretty mad were they not, without putting in even the half hearted effort of checking Wiki they're the first name that sprang to mind as being one of the favourites for this off the back of that...

edit: I had a look to sate my curiousity there. Something rings a bell with Burley going despite them being top or joint top of the league at the time (protesting The Riccarton Three getting sold behind his back or something like that. 16 years ago roughly 😮)

25 in 20 years! And Craig Levein did 6 years in two stints, leaving it 23 in 14 years!

yeah, the 6 caretaker/joint managers bit stood out to going by the rest of the thread numbers. At least 3 caretakers during the Romanov era alone, suggests a fair few unplanned/unexpected departures, mutual consentings or sackings in there!

edit: legit can't mind when he got involved at the club so possibly more than 3. At a minimum starting from Burley's stint in charge, ending wiiiith... Shabba?

Caley Thistle aren't historically much of a poisoned chalice but think that might change, sadly.  We are on our 11th manager in 27 years.

Name From Until Played Won Drawn Lost Win % Honours / Notes
Soviet Union Sergei Baltacha 1994 1995 40 13 10 17 32.50 Player/Manager of Caledonian F.C. prior to merger.

Became manager after Inverness Thistle F.C. manager turned down offer.

Player/Manager at ICT, made 9 appearances for ICT.

Scotland Steve Paterson 1995 2002 329 147 92 90 44.68 Longest serving manager in Inverness CT history.

1996–97 Scottish Third Division Champion.

1998–99 Scottish Second Division Runners up and Playoff winners.

Scotland John Robertson 2002 2004 84 44 13 27 52.38 2003–04 Scottish First Division Champion.

Scotland John Hughes 2013 2016 122 50 31 41 41.30 2013–14 Scottish League Cup Finalist.

2014–15 Scottish Cup Winners.

Republic of Ireland Richie Foran 2016 2017 45 11 14 20 24.44
Scotland John Robertson 2017 Present 137 65 34 38 47.45 Second Spell.

2017–18 Scottish Challenge Cup Winners.

There's a couple of errors in that, from Wikipedia - we were promoted as runners-up in 1999 rather than play-off winners and the figures for Craig Brewsters first spell are wrong.

Chris Robinson agreed to sell to Vlad in August 2004 when Levein was getting to the end of his first spell, but I don't think the actual deal was concluded till early 2005. So Levein had already left to go to Leicester and Robbo was in charge.

Not as many as I thought we'd had to be honest. Duffy, Barry and Danny took our average up as we were going through a manager a season until 2011

QP with just the seven managers since 2000:

John McCormack 1998 - Dec 2002

Kenny Brannigan Jan 2003 - Aug 2004

Billy Stark Aug 2004 to Jan 2008

Gardner Speirs Jan 2008 to Dec 2013

Angus MacPherson Jan 2014 to Sep 2018

Mark Roberts Sep 2018 to Dec 2019

Raymond McKinnon Jan 2020- date

Gardner Speirs and Angus MacPherson with almost eleven years between them.

Three of those who left went because they had been offered other jobs; McCormack (return to full time at Morton), Stark (Scotland U21s) and MacPherson St Mirren DoF).

Only Brannigan (fighting with a supporter during a game) and Roberts (poor results) were sacked, Speirs leaving by "mutual consent".
