The Poisoned Chalice Ranking

A common but rarely qualified question: which job in Scottish football is really the most perilous gig for a manager? Which football club has gone through the most managers in the modern era and which clubs have proven to be the most gentle, glorified retirement homes?

The parameters for this obviously have to be set on an equal basis. For modernity and simplicity's sake, I'd use managerial posts held since the year 2000 as an objective benchmark: as that's one full generation to the present day.

A trickier and largely subjective element is how to judge interim management positions. I'd include any interim manager who either i) was kept in place beyond the reasonable needs of the recruitment process or ii) indicated their desire to be considered as a candidate for the vacant post.

So in the case of Greenock Morton, Anton McElhone would be included in the list because he was left (and confirmed) in interim charge from December 2020 until March this year; Joe McLaughlin would also qualify for the 2004-05 season because his caretaker role was openly considered as an audition for the vacant post at that time. 

Whereas the Chris Millar/Jim McAlister effort at the end of the 18/19 season -  when Jonatan Johannson flounced off hours before kick-off - wouldn't count because it was a makeshift role with no desire to continue it going forward.

We're ruled out of the running in the 20 year stakes due mainly to settled tenures of Gus MacPherson (2003-2010) and Danny Lennon (2010-2014).

However between Danny Lennon leaving and Jim Goodwin joining, we were in serious revolving door territory. 

From Lennon's last day on 12 May 2014 to Goodwin's first day on 28 June 2019 - a period of just over 5 years, Goodwin became the ninth person to take that role up full time.

Dodds did 1 game (which we won); Bowman had the longest caretaker reign in terms of time, but also only had 1 game (which we lost); Gordon Young won 2 and lost 1 after we had already been relegated; and Laurie Ellis had two caretaker gigs, winning 2 from 2, and losing 1 from 1 respectively.

Whatever happened to Teale, he was a definite improvement on Craig and if Kenny McLean had not been sold on the last day of the Jan 2015 transfer window who knows? He kept us within touching distance of Well & County who were our fellow strugglers that season until a couple of heavy defeats against them  in H2H matches just prior to the split scuppered his chances of getting to rebuild in the Championship. I still felt he would get another gig somewhere but it just hasn't turned out that way for him.

 

It seems to be the way now that most clubs give new managers less than 2 seasons (length of their initial contract?) nowadays. Goodwin just coming up to  2 seasons with us is now in the top half of long serving managers. Obviously this is in poor taste but I reckon the recent restart of the roundabout is a sign that the worst of Covid is past and JG will move further up the long servers list before next season starts.

I wouldn't count the Alec Cleland period in charge but the rest were all permanent managers. We have stabilised considerably since Hopkin took charge but I imagine 20 managers will take some beating.

Hearts under Vladimir Romanov were pretty mad were they not, without putting in even the half hearted effort of checking Wiki they're the first name that sprang to mind as being one of the favourites for this off the back of that...

edit: I had a look to sate my curiousity there. Something rings a bell with Burley going despite them being top or joint top of the league at the time (protesting The Riccarton Three getting sold behind his back or something like that. 16 years ago roughly )

16 different managers including three that have had two shifts.  Derek Adams twice outright, Steven Ferguson as caretaker and co-manager, Stuart Kettlewell as Co-manager and then mananger outright.

yeah, the 6 caretaker/joint managers bit stood out to going by the rest of the thread numbers. At least 3 caretakers during the Romanov era alone, suggests a fair few unplanned/unexpected departures, mutual consentings or sackings in there!

edit: legit can't mind when he got involved at the club so possibly more than 3. At a minimum starting from Burley's stint in charge, ending wiiiith... Shabba?

Chris Robinson agreed to sell to Vlad in August 2004 when Levein was getting to the end of his first spell, but I don't think the actual deal was concluded till early 2005. So Levein had already left to go to Leicester and Robbo was in charge.

Gardner Speirs and Angus MacPherson with almost eleven years between them. 

Three of those who left went because they had been offered other jobs; McCormack (return to full time at Morton), Stark (Scotland U21s) and MacPherson St Mirren DoF).

Only Brannigan (fighting with a supporter during a game) and Roberts (poor results) were sacked, Speirs leaving by "mutual consent".
