Nathan Paterson

I wonder if Valentino Livramento could be convinced to embrace his Scottish heritage. He's only 19 years old but looks a more complete right back than anything else we have plus is playing regularly for a decent Southampton side. Considering our other options are O'Donnell who plays in, what has become, a poor Motherwell side or Nathan Paterson who can't even get into a shite Everton side.

The English have probably the best right back options in the world.

The top 4 being Reece James, TAA, Kyle Walker, Trippier

Then you have Wan Bissaka, Walker Peters, Aarons, Ben Johnson, Lamptey, James Justin, Cash who are all very capable players and in a different era could pick up a few caps.

Livramento can also choose Portugal I believe, I doubt he will be in any rush to commit away from England anytime soon and I wouldn't blame him for that. Wouldn't do any harm to let him know he'd be welcome and keep in touch with him.

O'Donnell has done well and gives 100% (like everyone should) but anyone in his position who gets an unlikely call up will put absolutely everything in to it.

We need to be looking at other options.

Cash plays for Poland now and there was some chat about Wan Bissaka committing to someone else (maybe Ivory Coast?). Still a ridiculous amount of talent ahead of him though, even with Walker and Tripper the wrong side of 30.

Hell, he might have even been Chelsea's third-best English right-back a couple of years ago.

Livramento would be a brilliant option but he looks to be committed to England.

Ryan Fredericks (West Ham) is also eligible for Scotland through his grandfather. He's not great but there's not a lot of competition.

James and TAA are 22 and 23. They are likely going to be the main two for the next 7-10yrs you would think.

Players back themselves though and Livramento will be thinking he's going to develop and be competing with them in a few years. It is probably only after a few years of not getting picked that he may consider other options.

I wouldn't be against looking at Fredericks but if he's not getting a game either then it's pretty hard to justify it. In that case we are better sticking with Patterson and letting him get the game time and experience.

Livramento I reckon might end up going for Portugal

He has Cancelo, Dalot and Soares ahead of him for Portugal. If he's really intent on playing international football Id'd say Scotland was his best bet. It's not like the connection is tenuous (grandmother's pen pal's dug) as his Mum is Scottish.

Now would be the time to at least ask livramento after England drafted in ty Mitchell and walker Peters after withdrawals from their squad

It can't hurt to ask, he maybe hasn't shown any interest because he doesn't believe Scotland are interested. Worst he can say is no.

Livramento's main competition is Cancelo. He could be Portugal's second choice RB very soon. Soares is second choice RB at Arsenal. He has not been automatic choice for the Portugal squad in recent years. Dalot was United's 2nd choice (at best) before Rangnick was appointed. He was punted out on loan at Milan last season.

Clarke should have called up Livramento this month. He should also have offered Ryan Fredericks a chance two. Instead, he stuck with O'Donnell and Patterson.

Livramento was never going to be accepting a Scotland call-up at this stage of his career. The only way he'll be playing for us is if things don't really go his way over the next 4 or 5 years. The idea that Clarke and the SFA have just ignored him (or Fredericks) is nonsense, but they can't exactly turn up at their houses and bundle them into a van to take them up to the Oriam for training.

Fair point. Livramento could have accepted a Scotland call-up for these friendlies and still been able to switch to Portugal. That, of course, is wishful thinking even if two team mates are in the squad.

Fredericks, however, is never going to play for England. Scotland should be an attractive alternative if he wants to play international football. Perhaps Moyes could help.

Would Bournemouth's Dembele accept a call-up? Definitely worth considering.

Similar things would have been said about Mctominay at the time he chose to play for us. He was playing for a much better and high profile team. Yet made to choice to play for us despite having better (player wise) options.

We don't know Livramento thoughts on who he would or wouldn't play for. So to be so definite about it is just silly.
