Why Don't people invest in Scottish Football?

Question

We all want Scottish Football back to being competitive at least in Domestic game and Europe. But it never ever be. While lack of investment is on going. Scotland Outside two Glasgow clubs. Have Two Edinburgh Clubs, Two Dundee Clubs and Aberdeen. Strangely unlike Glasgow clubs local Business are unwilling to invest at the same level as the Two Glasgow Clubs.

While do clubs outside the two Glasgow clubs struggle so much to attract investment both local and worldwide. In terms of Football having Seven clubs competitive is good for the game.

Hearts had a great opportunity to be a bigger club by playing at Murrayfield instead of Tynecastle. Their attendances for bigger games at Murrayfield were beyond Tynecastle's current capacity and so they'd be making more money each season. They also effectively spent a thousand quid+ per additional seat of capacity in order to upgrade their main stand when they could just have sold the lot to developers. Not prudent.

Is there any Reason. For the Strange way you break Up sentences. And Throw in spurious Capitals?

And why you started with "Question", but didn't ask one?

In the long-term, playing in a quarter empty stadium you don't own rather than a full stadium which you do own is not worth it for the sake of a couple of thousand extra fans.

Great question, Darren.

I see the huge cup final attendances of Aberdeen 40k+ Hibs and Hearts 30k+ Dundee United c.20k and wonder about how big these clubs really could be.

I think Romanov for all his faults could see that an investment in Hearts has huge potential and it's not so difficult to overturn at least one of the old firm and grab a champions league place when all you really need is to be consistently a little better than the remaining 9 premiership teams. And a bit of luck against the Glasgow pair.

If you do it right then it's just a case of money goes to money.

Aberdeen almost had it too when they adopted the old firm's traditional policy of hoovering up the best talent from their rivals but just came up short against Deila's Celtic. I was hopeful of their new stadium being for 30k supporters including a 10k top deck to be opened for bigger games but it was not to be.

I tend to think that filling in the corners of Tynecastle and Easter Road would help give them the extra money they need to put in a stronger challenge at home and in Europe. Doing so consistently and filling the stadium more regularly by cutting ticket prices at certain times would make them more attractive to investors.

If I was an Edinburgh multi millionaire with ten million quid I could either

Put it all into Hearts and Hibs (or City!) and come away with no much after a decade or

Buy a lot of real estate in Edinburgh and bung some loose change to the local rugger club. Chances are after a decade I'd have a fair whack of money, a life membership at the rugger social club, guaranteed 5 nations tickets and business contacts with all the other rich twats who like egg chasing.

At least we haven't had too much of the spectacle that they have in England where some chancer buys a club and separates ownership of the ground and the club and then flogs the ground for redevelopment. Mackin tried it at East Stirlingshire but Falkirk Council kiboshed that.

I'm sure I recall attendances of 25k+ for Hearts' home games at Murrayfield against the bigger clubs.

That would surely have raked in a lot of additional cash for them and made them more attractive to possible investors. Then again given their past experience of going down that road maybe they did make the right decisions.

Why should Scotland ever be competitive in Europe ?

We already punch well above our weight .

Investors expect some sort of return , where are you going to get that in Scotland. Look at the Americans at both Dundee clubs, they will most likely never see any of the money they have put in ever again.

Businesses will invest in Championship teams in England as they have the opportunity to make the Premier league . Most won't . Thats not the case up here and never will be. If Rangers and Celtic , along with others join a Euro league those teams will possibly become worth some investment , until then bar fans own cash (Wealthy directors at Rangers and their contacts) no one will put the sort of money you are looking for into the game.

Aberdeens gates tend to be around the 10 to 15 K so they are already building seats they won't use every week

To build another 10K on an extra deck to just be opened for bigger games would never be viable . On pay back terms it would take 100's of years

A ground that size in Edinburgh might be useful as we go from the big 3 in Glasgow to 20K in Edinburgh for some cup semi finals but 30K in Aberdeen would only result in very large old firm away supports and thus giving up a lot of the home team advantage.

When we played them at Murrayfield in October 2017 the gate was 18,534 in part helped by a larger than normal away support due to the novelty factor. Thats only 48,610 empty seats, not a good look for Scottish football. Put that crowd in Tynecastle and it looks great.

Stupid thing to say. That’s the Scottish equivalent of West Ham leaving the wonderful Boleyn Ground for the Olympic stadium. At least West Ham can fill their soulless bucket of a stadium.

I’m surprised that an investor hasn’t picked a Scottish club to turn into a Scottish Man City tbh. Okay, Romanov tried it - and it nearly worked to be fair until he sacked Burley and then financially it all went to shit.

The investor would not need to spend nearly as much money as those would in England - desperate to get to the premier league - and a small but significant investment into the chosen Scottish club would make a hell of a difference. Winning the top flight is the holy grail of course but even forgetting that, making the club more competitive with the old firm would likely return a Scottish or league cup. High league finishes would also be achievable and then there’s the possibility of getting to the Europa League group stages -
all of which generate a bit of revenue.

All it takes is Celtic or Rangers to have an off season and they are there for the taking. Aberdeen were challenging Celtic in February 2016 but they shat it. With higher quality players and a bit more money behind them they could have easily beaten Ronnys Celtic to the title.

Of course, the investor would have to accept that the returns might not be great due to the profile of the Scottish game. They would just have to be up for the challenge and have a genuine interest in Scottish football. It still surprises me though that someone out there hasn’t thought they would like to make a club a bit of a play thing an try to do incredible things with them. You never know, winning the league with another Scottish club would be massive news in European football and if they got said club into the Champions League group stages (this is unrealistic I know but we can dream) it would boost their profile massively. With a bit of marketing they could maybe make them more fashionable across Europe and the world.
