It may have been mentioned earlier but surely the spot-check idea is utterly pointless. Say 1 in 10 people are being checked, what’s stopping someone who isn’t vaccinated from coming back 5 minutes later with a 90% chance of not getting checked?

It's perfect for one of the main goals of these passports, giving a certain group of people a sense of "safety" and also making it seem like they're doing something.

No, your point is simply ridiculous. If unvaccinated people have the temerity to do something in their spare time on a Saturday, they'll continue to do it. Rather than going to a stadium where there is zero evidence of mass transmission though, they'll go to indoor spaces where the risk is demonstrably greater. The idea that this is balanced out by them not using public transport - completely unsubstantiated btw - is also nonsense.
When you're working this hard to rummage around for knock-on, indirect safety benefits of a policy, it is clearly not worth the time or hassle to implement.

My point was anyone who claims that:

a massively attended closely packed football game
little to no masks being worn
fans singing and shouting
Large tightly packed groups moving about on public transport before and after a game
mixing indoors in pubs in large numbers before and after a game

comes under the banner of an outdoor event is seriously missing the point as to what the document was referring to.

The infection fatality rate of covid is now comparable to that of the flu. Would anyone in favour of vaccine passports have any qualms if someone at the football was sitting next to them who didn’t regularly get their flu jab?

That's exactly the point! 😆

The death rate is low BECAUSE folk have had the vaccine and are following the rules.

The point of trying to add more layers of safety is to make sure it remains.

Like it or not, I would pretty confidently predict there will be a higher % of unvaccinated folk that would go to a football game than in society as a whole. That's not to say that football fans refuse vaccines more than others, but the demographic of younger men would suggest that.

As I say, what are the alternatives, because regardless of what you or I think the intentions are of the government, if clubs cannot come up with a credible alternative this will be rolled out.

Personally, I'd rather either a large enough portion of the population are vaccinated that this isn't required or even mandatory masks inside stadiums until seated, but the 'do nothing' approach will not be an option and the sooner football realises this the better. Vaccine passports should either be a last resort or time limited.

I get your club and its fans will be down on anything this government does or says, but whether you like it or not, they have the power to effectively close your or any stadium down if they think the virus is out of control again.

It's autumn. Flu doesn't kick in until winter and Covid is expected to be worse over winter.
Covid is putting large numbers of people in hospital for prolonged periods unlike flu.
Comparing them is not really appropriate.

Why are the SPFL allowing Rangers and Celtic to use this as an excuse to exclude away fans?

You can guarantee if it was a "diddy club" not letting them in the SPFL would soon intervene.

I get your point but I’ve not been to Celtic Park or Ibrox for a league game in many years.  Absolutely toxic atmosphere at both grounds.

AHEAD of Sunday’s Scottish Premiership match against Hibernian, Rangers would like to update supporters on the introduction of vaccine certificate checks across Scotland.

From October 1, following legislation introduced by the Scottish Government, everyone attending matches at Ibrox Stadium must be fully vaccinated and everyone must bring proof of this status with you to the match, unless exempt.

According to Scottish Government guidelines, fully vaccinated means “… vaccinated with a MHA recognised vaccine in line with the MHA recommended number of doses for the vaccine used, and two weeks have passed for the vaccine to take effect.”

Supporters are encouraged to arrive with a hard copy of their vaccine certificate, however digital copies will also be accepted. Visitors from all parts of the UK will be able to use their existing vaccine certificates.

The following groups are exempt from carrying proof of vaccination:

  • Under 18’s

  • People who are not able to receive the vaccine for medical reasons

  • Participants in vaccine trials

  • Workers or volunteers at the venue or event

Those exempt for medical reasons or due to participation in vaccine trials are asked to carry an official letter to confirm this. You will not be admitted to the stadium without this.

Covid status certification does not replace existing measures and supporters are encouraged to continue to wear face coverings and follow test and protect rules and guidance.

Rangers are obliged to follow legislation. We appreciate supporters cooperation at this time.

Those vaccinated in Scotland can access their certificates by following the instructions here.

The Covid red zone excuse the two are using is pathetic, given Lyon fans were in the away section at Ibrox three days before it was impossible to give access to Motherwell supporters.

Are Bayer Leverkusen fans being allocated tickets for this Thursday's game at Parkhead?

Of course, these are UEFA competitions, so Covid won't be prevalent in the grounds on those occasions.

Livi fans were also there in the LC match.

As you say, the competition rules require it.

Over to you SPFL

Encouraged to bring the hard copy which is easily faked? This just means they dont have scanners to chexk peoples phones.

This isn't a dig at Rangers. The system is not yet fit for purpose

I’d image the amount of people who put in the time and effort to fake it would be very, very small to the point of being negligible

The main issue is are stewards on low pay really going to actually check peoples' documents or just wave people through? When 91% of adults have been at least one dosed it doesn't seem like the country has a huge anti-vaxxer problem like they do in the states.
