The All-Time Scottish Football Hot Potato

Potato 19 (1979-1982)

Potato 19 would be the longest lasting of the Premier Division era so far, surviving through to a third season unlike the previous ones which only lasted two. It would visit all 12 clubs who played in the division over that period, changing hands 34 times in total. Partick Thistle would overtake Clyde as the club who have had the most spells with the potato so far - they would hold Potato 19 six times, taking it to 56 different spells in total. They'd also leapfrog Queen's Park into second place in terms of the most matches with the potato - they are now just 14 games behind Clyde, and with the Bully Wee not returning to the top flight it will surely only be a matter of time before they assume top spot, though Kilmarnock and Hibs are both closely coming up behind them.

The opening day of 1979/80 saw Dundee take hold of the potato after being pumped 3-0 in a Dundee derby. It would have a few short spells at other clubs before ending up with Hibernian at the end of September, where it would stay for nine matches. Hibs would finish rock bottom, but fortunately after beating Partick Thistle in December they wouldn't see the potato again this season. The potato would instead have several short spells with various clubs before ending up with Dundee again at the start of April. Before getting the potato, the Dees were in the relegation zone, behind rivals United on goal difference, but had played two more games. They would lose their next three matches, leaving them three points behind Kilmarnock with three games to play, and the potato looked to be in a bit of trouble given that two of their remaining three fixtures were against league leaders Celtic. Amazingly though, they would thump Celtic 5-1 at Dens Park, and Celtic would then also lose at home to Aberdeen to hand the title to the Dons by a point. The potato would finsh the season with a tour of Glasgow - Celtic beat Partick Thistle and then the Jags immediately beat Rangers to ensure the potato spent the summer in Govan.

Rangers managed to get rid of the potato on the second week of the following season, passing it back to Partick Thistle for a three week spell before it had a week in Paisley and four with Dundee United. The Terrors would pass it on to Kilmarnock in mid-October thanks to a 1-0 win at Rugby Park, and Killie would ultimately hold the potato right through to the New Year, a run of 12 matches which included a 7-0 shelling at Tannadice. That run would go a long way towards sealing Killie's fate, and they would go down at the end of the season. They did get rid of the potato with a win over St Mirren, and it kicked about various places (including a one week return to Killie) before finding its way to Heart of Midlothian in late-March. Hearts were also doomed at the bottom, so them taking the potato so late in the season was not a good sign, but they managed to offload it after just three matches. Unfortunately for the potato, the team they offloaded it to were Killie, who were officially relegated by the defeat to Hearts, and only had four games left to avoid taking the potato down with them. Draws with Morton and Celtic and a narrow defeat to Partick Thistle meant they only had one more chance, and that was a trip to face Alex Ferguson's Aberdeen at Pittodrie. Amazingly, Killie's part-timers came away with a 2-0 victory thanks to goals from Derrick McDicken and Gordon McCreadie, ensuring the potato lived to fight another day.

The Dons failed to win either of their opening matches of 1981/82, but got rid of the potato in their third match by beating Partick Thistle 2-0 at Firhill. The Jags would hold on to it for five matches before passing it on to Hibernian, and it then jumped around a bit, including four-week spells back with each of Hibs and Thistle, before making its way to Airdrie at the start of March. Prior to taking the potato, Airdrie were engaged in a relegation battle, two points clear of the drop zone with 15 matches remaining. Unfortunately for both Airdrie and the potato, they lost 12 matches in a row to confirm their relegation, and leave them with just three games to save the spud. The first was a trip to Firhill, where Sandy Clark (arsehole) had a goal disallowed in a 0-0 draw and the second was a home game against a Morton side who hadn't recorded an away win all season - Morton kept that record, but the match finished 1-1. That meant the potato's only hope was a trip to Dundee - even an Airdrie win wouldn't guarantee its safety, the Dees could themselves still have been relegated if they lost and Partick Thistle beat United at Firhill. As it was, Dundee won 1-0, saving themselves but sending the Potato 19 to a permanent home alongside Potato 8 in the Broomfield trophy room.

Potato 20 (1982-83)

For the first, but almost certainly not the last, time since the 10 team Premier Division was introduced, Potato 20 would only last a single season. It would change hands just nine times in total, and would visit seven different clubs. It would avoid the top three completely, although that could have been very different but for the luck of the draw after the opening day. For the third potato in a row, it would end up in the warm embrace of a club which already had one potato to their name. Looking at the bigger picture, Hibs and Killie would move closer to the top of the all-time potato table, they were now in 4th and 5th respectively, just 17 and 18 games behind leaders Clyde.

The opening day of the 1982/83 season saw three draws, plus 2-0 home victories for Celtic over Dundee and Dundee United over Aberdeen - the only way to decide where the potato started was a random draw, and Dundee were the unlucky receipients. However, the Dees would immediately bounce back from their bad luck by beating Motherwell 3-1 at Dens Park. The Steelmen took a 7-0 pasting from Celtic at Fir Park in their next match, then lost to Morton* and Aberdeen before finally offloading the potato to St Mirren with a 2-0 win at Fir Park. Saints draw their next three matches but finally got rid of the potato by beating Hibernian 3-0 at Love Street, setting off a six-game streak for Hibs, the longest of any club this season. The Hibees would eventually return it to Motherwell with a 1-0 win at Fir Park, but Motherwell quickly got rid of it at the second attempt, beating Kilmarnock 2-0 at Rugby Park in the tradional New Year "both their actual rivals are rubbish and these two are fairly close to each other so it'll do derby".

Killie would lose to Morton and Hibs, then draw at Ibrox, before finally offloading the potato back to Dundee with a 2-0 home win. The Dees also drew at Ibrox before losing to Hibs and Aberdeen, but they would then pass the potato to Rangers courtesy of a 1-0 win at Dens Park. The Gers drew at home to Hibs, but then got rid of the potato by beating Motherwell 1-0 at Ibrox. The Steelmen's next two matches would see them draw at home to Dundee then lose 3-0 at Celtic Park, thus setting up a crunch relegation showdown with Morton at Fir Park - Motherwell were two points ahead with both clubs having six matches remaining. Motherwell would smash Greenock Morton 4-1 to set themselves on the route to safety and push their opponents towards the drop. Morton now had five matches to save the potato, but it started badly, with defeats to Hibs and Rangers then a 4-0 home pumping from eventual champions Dundee United. Next up was a trip to Celtic Park, but a 2-0 defeat meant it all came down to a Renfrewshire derby at Cappielow. However, as they've done so often in this fixture over the last 40 years, Morton lost to St Mirren and the potato was gone within a season, joining Potato 6 on the Clyde Riviera.

*Incidentally, I recently had the notion of the quantum potato multiverse suggested to me by @thisGRAEME, since the random allocation means there are two or more potential paths the potato could have taken. You will be glad to know that this Morton match united both possible potato paths, since had Aberdeen been allocated it on the opening day, they would have passed it to Morton on matchday two, and the next match would have sent it to Motherwell anyway.

Potato 21 (1983-85)

Potato 21 managed to avoid a one-and-done existence, but as with so many in the Premier Division era it faltered in season two. Some history would be made, as we would end up with the first ever three-time potato holders. The top five on the all-time table didn't change - Hibs were the only one of the sides who appeared in the league in this period, across the two seasons they were involved in five potato matches, winning four and drawing one. The biggest movers were St Mirren, who surged to sixth, but still 27 games behind Clyde.

The opening day of the 1983/84 campaign saw Motherwell take the potato thanks to a 4-0 pumping from reigning champions Dundee United. The Steelmen would have a wretched campaign - they failed to win any of their first eight matches, but then picked up a surprise 2-1 win over Rangers at Ibrox. This was far from a vintage Rangers team - after losing to Motherwell they also lost to St Mirren, Celtic and Aberdeen then drew with Dundee United, before finally passing the potato to St Johnstone with a 1-0 win at Muirton Park. The Perth Saints didn't have it for long before they passed it on to their Paisley brothers St Mirren, who kept the potato through Christmas and New Year. Saints returned it to Motherwell in January, who held it for four matches before it spent a game each with St Johnstone and Dundee then ended up with Celtic.

Celtic's first potato defence was at home to Aberdeen - they were six points behind the Dons at the top of the table, having played two games more, so this was their last chance of keeping the title race alive. The Hoops picked up a 1-0 win to send the potato to Aberdeen, and when the Dons followed that up with a 1-1 draw with Hearts they may have been slightly worried about a major collapse. Their fears were unfounded, they beat Motherwell 2-1 at Pittodrie in the next match and would go on to win the title by a very comfortable seven point margin. Motherwell lost their next two matches to Celtic and Dundee to confirm their relegation (this would be their last relegation from the top flight to date), leaving them with just four more matches to save the potato. Fortunately, they would beat St Mirren at Fir Park in their next match to leave the potato in safe hands. Saints would draw at home to Rangers, then lose and draw in back-to-back trips to Tannadice, before they defeated Aberdeen 3-2 at Love Street on the final day of the season to leave Alex Ferguson's Dons holding both the league title and the potato over the summer.

The 1984/85 campaign was notable as being the last one not won by Celtic or Rangers, but it was a fairly miserable campaign for the potato. Dumbarton and Greenock Morton were cut adrift in the relegation zone, and the potato spent 29 games in total in their possession. It started with Aberdeen beating Dundee on the opening day, then the Dees would suffer three more defeats before a thrilling 4-3 derby win over Dundee United. United would immediately beat Greenock Morton 3-0 at Cappielow, setting off a seven match run as potato guardians for the Ton which ended when they beat Celtic 1-0 in November. Celtic immediately beat Dumbarton 2-0, and the Sons would make four valiant attempts at getting rid of it, drawing with Hibs, losing narrowly to Aberdeen then drawing with St Mirren and Dundee United, before they finally beat Greenock Morton 4-2 at Cappielow in mid-December. Morton would hold the potato for the best part of four months, suffering 12 straight defeats before they beat St Mirren 3-2 at Love Street in a Renfrewshire derby. Saints would immediately beat Dundee, who would then instantly pass it to Dumbarton, who were three points adrift of Hibs in the relegation spots with four games to go. Unfortunately for the potato, Dumbarton would suffer four consecutive defeats to get relegated out of the top flight for the last (ever?) time, and ensure that Potato 21 joined Potatoes 2 and 16 at Boghead.

The bold font was a much needed addition craigkillie!

I use it when I'm doing a one or two season potato and can discuss every single time it changes hands. When it's a longer-running potato and I have to summarise a bit more I tend to leave it out.

Potato 22 (1985-96)

Who saw this one coming? Potato 22 would take us all the way from Heysel and Live Aid through to Euro 96 and Oasis at Knebworth. It watched the top flight go from 10 teams to 12, then back to 10, then back to 12 again before returning to 10. This potato changed hands 115 times, visiting 19 different clubs, including seven separate spells of 10 or more matches. There would be big changes at the top of the all-time table, with Hibernian and St Mirren surging into the top two spaces having each had 40+ matches with this potato, while Partick Thistle moved into third place. St Mirren would become the club with the most different potato spells - they had this one on 10 separate occasions taking them to 67 spells in total for all potatoes, four ahead of both Partick Thistle and Hibs.

The opening day of the 1985/86 season saw Aberdeen beat Hibernian 3-0 to ensure that Hibs were the first recipients of the potato - this would be the first of 14 spells with Potato 22. There were only three spells of more than three matches all season - two were six game spells with Hibs and the other was a five game one with Motherwell. Motherwell would finish the season in 9th place and in possession of the potato, but fortunately for everyone involved the league was being increased to 12 clubs and there was no relegation. It would take five attempts at the start of 1986/87 before Motherwell could get rid of the potato, and when they did it didn't have far to travel - a 3-0 thumping of Hamilton Accies at Douglas Park kept it in Lanarkshire. Accies would hold on to the potato for three whole months, suffering 12 defeats and three draws before they finally gave it to Hibs, who held it for six games over Christmas and New Year. The Hibees would pass it on to Falkirk in January, and the Bairns would have a 13 game run of their own before sending it back to hapless Hamilton. That defeat left Accies five points adrift with four games left - if they didn't get rid of the potato it would be going down with them. A draw with Hibs and a defeat to Dundee United pushed the potato closer to the edge, but fortunately Accies then beat St Mirren 1-0, a result which was enough to save the potato but not them, and the spud spent the summer in Paisley.

1987/88 would be a dangerous season, with three teams going down as the league shrunk back from 12 to 10, and it looked particularly troubling when the potato ended up locked in the posession of one of the worst top flight teams in recent memory. After dotting about a few different places, the potato ended up being passed to Greenock Morton on Halloween, and they would still have it at Easter thanks to an incredible 24 game run which incorporated 19 defeats and five draws. Fortunately for the potato, they picked up a shock 3-2 win over Rangers with five games to go and the potato would eventually see out the summer with Hearts. The relegation risk substantially dropped over the next couple of seasons, with only one team out of 10 going down. The 1988/89 season saw the potato jumping around a lot - there were only two spells which lasted longer than three matches. The first of those saw Motherwell hold it for 14 games at the start of the season, and the second was a nine game run with Hamilton Accies from January to April. The potato flirted with danger - Accies were doomed to relegation by the end of that run but surprisingly beat Celtic, only for it to end up back with them with only two matches left of the season. Fortunately they beat St Mirren 2-1 in their penultimate game to keep it alive - they only won six games all season, but two of them came in crunch end of season potato matches.

After lots of short spells at the start of 1989/90, the potato found its way to St Mirren in February for a curious seven match spell which included four 0-0 draws. They finally offloaded it to Celtic with a 3-0 win at Parkhead, and amazingly the Hoops would have a seven game run of their own with the potato, losing four and drawing three to keep the potato over the summer. 1990/91 was a jeopardy-free summer, with the league deciding to expand to 12 teams again. Hibs and St Mirren finished in the bottom two, and between them they managed to monopolise the potato from November 1990 to September 1991, a total of 32 games between them. Saints initially held it for five matches before beating Hibs 1-0 just before Christmas, setting off an eight game run for Hibs which ended with a 4-3 win over Saints at Easter Road. Saints kept a hold of the potato for the next 10 matches only to give it back to Hibs on the final day of the season. The sides would face each other again on the opening day of 1991/92, with Hibs winning 4-1 at Easter Road to kickstart an eight-game run for Saints. The potato would finally leave this strange Leith-Paisley axis when Saints beat Dunfermline. The Pars would then have a 10 game spell of their own before giving it to Falkirk for six matches. After several quick changeovers, the potato would make its way back to rock-bottom Dunfermline with just eight games left of the season - they would fail to win any of their next six but just when it looked like game over for Potato 22 they beat Motherwell at East End Park to send the spud to the safety of Lanarkshire.

1992/93 was fairly uneventful in the potato battle - it had lots of three or four game spells with clubs and the longest run was seven games with Airdrie in the middle of the season. The closest it came to extinction was when potato holders Hearts travelled to Brockville to take on bottom club Falkirk with just three matches remaining. A Falkirk defeat would have surely spelled the end for the potato, but astonishingly the Bairns won 6-0 to keep the potato in Edinburgh over the summer - this was just as well, since Falkirk would lose their last two games and suffer relegation. 1993/94 would be another cut-throat season with three teams going down as the league dropped back down to 10 yet again. Various teams had brief spells with the potato before Dundee took hold of it for a 12 game run from December to March which all but sealed their fate. Fortunately they would shake it off and it would eventually end up with Hibernian going into what would be a dramatic final day. Hibs themselves were safe, but their visitors at Easter Road were a newly-promoted Kilmarnock side who were just a point clear of the relegation spots and knew a defeat would most likely send them (and the potato) down. Killie, inspired by player-manager Tommy Burns in what would be his final game in charge, held on for a 0-0 draw to survive the drop on goal difference.

1994/95 marked the introduction of the first relegation play-off (and three points for a win), which added an extra variable to the potato equation - the play-off itself wouldn't count as a potato match, but clearly it could still make the difference between the potato surviving or dying. After a season of several short to medium spells, it looked like that play-off scenario might well come to pass, with Partick Thistle taking control of the potato with five games to go, whilst flirting with that 9th place spot. However, they would pick up an impressive 3-1 win over Celtic at Hampden, before Celtic beat Rangers 3-0 the following week to ensure the potato spent the summer with the champions. The 1995/96 campaign would be characterised with quite a few medium spells. Killie took the potato from Rangers on the opening day and held it for six matches, then it spent six more games with Raith Rovers followed by seven with Motherwell over Christmas and New Year. In March, the potato found its way to a Falkirk side who were bottom on goal difference with eight matches to go. The Bairns would lose their next six games to seal their relegation, but still had two games to go to save the potato. The first of those saw them welcome Hibs to Brockville - Paul McGrillen gave them a lead just after half-time, but Pat McGinlay equalised soon after and it finished 1-1. That left a final day showdown with Aberdeen at Pittodrie, but the Dons picked up a 2-1 win to finally bury the long-running Potato 22. This would be Falkirk's second permanent potato - it would join Potato 10 in their trophy room.

Was at many many spud-tacular matches in that spell and never even knew it.

Some harrowing times in there too...

Our first potato match can't be too far away now, can't wait to see what happens.

Given our rotten 05/06, there is a good chance we will have the worst PPS (Potatoes per spell) ratio in Scottish football.

Potato 23 (1996-97)

After the heady heights of the previous potato, Potato 23 brought us crashing down to earth with a swift one-year stint. It was at least a busy potato, changing hands 12 times across the season including seven one-game spells. Hibs extended their lead at the top of the all-time table after holding this potato for 10 matches - they are now 22 games ahead of St Mirren.

The opening day of 1996/97 only saw four matches played - Dunfermline v Hearts was played several weeks later for some reason - and Hibernian would be the first recipients of the potato thanks to a 2-1 home defeat to Kilmarnock. The Hibees would immediately get rid of it by beating Dundee United at Tannadice the following week, and the Terrors would go on to keep it for five matches (all of them one-goal defeats) before finally beating Aberdeen 1-0. The Dons would then instantly pass it on to Dunfermline Athletic, who would give it to Kilmarnock at the second time of asking. Killie's next match was a Friday night home game against Hibs, notable for being the first Killie game I remember being taken to, and a thrilling 4-2 victory for the good guys saw Hibernian take the potato.

The Hibees would fail to win either of their next two matches, but would then beat Motherwell 2-0 to start off a chain of four straight handovers - the Steelmen beat Celtic, who then beat Dundee United who then gave it back to Motherwell. The Steelmen took pumpings from Hearts and Celtic over the festive period, but then beat Hibernian, leading to a lengthy stay in Edinburgh for the potato. Hibs failed to win any of their next five matches, but did eventually scrape a 1-0 win over Dunfermline Athletic to pass it on. The Pars immediately won a Fife derby against Raith Rovers in Kirkcaldy - Rovers were bottom of the table and in real danger of relegation, so they had six matches left to save the potato. A narrow defeat to Dundee United and a draw with Celtic were followed by a 5-0 pumping from Motherwell, a 6-0 scudding from Rangers, and a 2-0 defeat to Aberdeen.

The last chance was a home game against Hibernian - Hibs started the day in 9th, so even a Raith win wouldn't definitely save the potato, but would have at least kept it in with a fighting chance through the play-offs. Peter Duffield gave Rovers an early lead, but Pat McGinlay equalised for Hibs midway through the first half and there was no further scoring. Potato 23 therefore became the first potato to take up residence in the Stark's Park trophy room.

Potato 24 (1997-98)

Potato 24 would be the final potato of the SFL Premier Division, with Scottish football entering an alleged brave new era in the summer of 1998. While it was the 10,000 seater rule that prevented some from entering the SPL, for potato 24 it was a more traditional problem of being hitched to a bunch of hapless wasters at the end of its one and only season. Hibernian extended their lead at the top of the all-time table to 36 games - a whole season's worth of potatoing - and would also overtake St Mirren as the club with the most distinct spells with a potato.

The 1997/98 campaign kicked off with just three games on the opening Saturday (the others being on Sunday and Monday respectively) and two of those were draws. The only team to lose on the opening day were Dunfermline Athletic, who went down 2-0 at home to Motherwell, but they only held the potato for a week before passing it on to Celtic with a 2-1 win in Glasgow. The Hoops also passed it on quickly by beating St Johnstone 2-0 in Perth, and Saints would take five attempts to get rid of it before finally beating Aberdeen 1-0 at McDiarmid Park in early October. The Dons would get rid of it in their next match courtesy of a 1-0 win over Hibernian, who would go on to possess the potato right through to the New Year.

Hibs held the potato for a total of 12 matches, losing 10 and drawing two, before they were finally able to beat Dunfermline Athletic 1-0 at Easter Road. The Pars failed to beat Aberdeen but did overcome Kilmarnock, who then immediately passed the potato on to St Johnstone. Saints had five failed attempts at offloading the potato before they were able to return it back to Kilmarnock in March, the potato providing an intriguing subplot as those two sides battled for the final European spot. Killie lost to Celtic and drew with Motherwell before they were able to pass the potato to Dundee United with a 1-0 win at Rugby Park with just three games left in the season. United lost to St Johnstone before travelling to Easter Road on the penultimate weekend, with Kjell Olofsson's famous double securing a 2-1 win and relegating Hibernian. The potato's only hope was for Hibs to beat Kilmarnock on the final day of the season at Rugby Park, but in reality it never looked likely - Killie took an early lead through Mark Roberts, and while Hibs did equalise it came in the last minute of the game. Potato 24 would therefore become the first one on display in the Hibernian trophy room, sitting alongside a very dusty 1902 Scottish Cup.

Hibernian extended their lead at the top of the all-time table to 36 games - a whole season's worth of potatoing - and would also overtake St Mirren as the club with the most distinct spells with a potato.

Our 8 season sojourn in the 2nd tier would help.

Potato 25 (1998-05)

The introduction of the SPL in 1998 led to big changes in Scottish football, many of them not really for the better, so it was good to have the comforting familiarity of the potato race to help us adapt. Potato 25 hung around for seven seasons, helped of course by the removal of the relegation play-off spot and two seasons without any relegation at all. It would change hands 85 times and visit 14 clubs, including the first new club (Livingston) since Clydebank in 1977. Curiously, Inverness Caledonian Thistle were promoted in the final season of this potato's existence, but never held it - they played four potato matches and drew all of them. Hibs' lead at the top of the all-time table was extended to 51 matches, but notably Motherwell and Kilmarnock climbed to 2nd and 4th respectively.

The first ever Saturday of SPL football saw Dunfermline take a 5-0 pumping at Celtic Park to become the first recipients of potato 25. It would jump around quite liberally in the opening weeks of the season before finding its way to Hearts in December. The Jam Tarts had made a decent start and were sitting in 5th place at this point, but an 11 game winless run with nine defeats and two draws left them and the potato in a perilous position at the bottom of the league. Fortunately for both, a win over Dundee United in April kickstarted a strong finish to the campaign to leave them comfortably safe, while the potato kicked around midtable clubs, eventually spending the summer with Dundee.

The Dees quickly offloaded it at the start of the 1999/00, passing it to an Aberdeen side that had made an infamously bad start.  The Dons held the potato for seven matches, a run which included a 7-0 defeat at home to Celtic, before a topsy turvy 6-5 win over Motherwell finally got rid of it. The potato would then have a series of short spells with clubs, changing hands 10 times in 17 games, before working its way back to Aberdeen in March. The Dons held the potato for another seven games, a run which all but doomed them to bottom spot in the division. The potato was never in danger, however, because the league was expanding to 12 teams and Falkirk's unsuitable ground meant that the potential relegation play-off was cancelled and Dons reprieved. As it happened, the Dons beat Motherwell again in April, before the potato would end up spending the summer with Hibernian.

Hibs would quickly get rid of the potato at the start of 2000/01, passing it to an abject Dundee United side who would go on to hold it for 15 matches (13 defeats and 2 draws) before beating Dunfermline 3-2 in November. Amazingly United stayed up despite having 7 points from their first 23 matches that season. The potato flitted around various different clubs for the rest of the season, never spending more than four with any club. Notably, this was the first season of the split, and the potato was sitting with 3rd placed Hibernian when the league split in half, thus giving it a relaxing climax to the season. It ultimately ended up spending the summer with champions Celtic after Killie beat them at Rugby Park on the final day. Celtic would open 2001/02 with a comfortable win over St Johnstone, and Saints would hold the potato for 13 matches in total. After a series of short spells with other clubs, it joined Hibs for six games in the New Year before they gave it to a by now all but doomed St Johnstone in March. Fortunately, Saints gave it to Hearts in the final game before the split, ensuring that it had another safe finish to the season. Livingston would get their first taste of the potato in the post split fixtures, losing to Aberdeen before immediately giving it to Dunfermline, who held it for the summer.

The Pars would return the potato to Livingston early in 2002/03, and the Lions would hold it for nine matches before finally getting rid of it by beating Dundee United. The potato would then have a series of short spells before ending up with Hibs for five games in the spring. The Hibees passed it to Partick Thistle, who held it for three games before giving it to Motherwell with five games remaining. Motherwell were in administration and looked set to finish bottom of the league, but again the potato was not under threat as a result of Falkirk's substandard ground. The Steelmen would go on to beat Livingston 6-2 on the final day of the season anyway, with James McFadden's hat-trick sending the potato to West Lothian for the summer. 2003/04 started with a series of 1-3 game spells before eventually spending the bulk of the winter in Kilmarnock as part of an eight-game run. Killie offloaded it to Partick Thistle who then held it for eight games of their own, a run which all but confirmed their relegation. Fortunately, Thistle passed the potato to 3rd placed Hearts just before the split, thus giving it a relaxing end to the season, eventually finding a summer home in Motherwell.

Motherwell passed the potato to Dundee early in the 2004/05 season, and the Dees had a six game spell, followed a month later by another five game spell. Dundee then passed it to Aberdeen for seven matches before brief spells at Livingston, Kilmarnock and Dundee United. United passed it to Rangers, who faced Dunfermline Athletic at East End Park in the penultimate game before the split. With Rangers facing Celtic the next week, any positive result from the Pars would have saved the potato for another season, but a 1-0 Rangers win sent the potato into the roulette wheel that was one of the most hotly contested relegation battles in the history of the top flight.

With five games to go, the bottom four were separated by just three points, with Dundee on 31, Dundee United on 29 and Dunfermline and Livingston on 28. A draw with Inverness and a defeat by Livi left the Pars three adrift at the bottom with three games to go, but out of nowhere they thumped Dundee 5-0 to send the Dees bottom on goal difference. Dundee held on to the potato thanks to a draw with Inverness in the penultimate fixture, meaning they held the potato heading into a four-way dogfight on the final day with Dunfermline and Livi on 34, Dundee United on 33 and Dundee on 32. Dundee were at Livingston, Dundee United were in Inverness and Dunfermline travelled to Kilmarnock. The only combination of results that could feasibly save the potato were a Dundee win and then Dundee United losing or Dunfermline by six or more goals. Even after 64 minutes, it looked like any of those results could still happen - the Pars had just gone 4-0 down, Dundee United were at 0-0 and Livi and Dundee were tied at 1-1. However, Dunfermline grimly held on to their 4-0 defeat and United ultimately snatched a late goal from the spot, which meant the only question was which side were taking the potato down with them. Ultimately, despite Tam McManus hitting the post in stoppage time, Livi held on to stay up, and Dundee tumbled to the First Division with their first ever permanent potato.

I thought we could potentially have escaped this ignominy. I remember being at that Dunfermline game, it is only the 2nd game I can remember anything of (1st being a home win over Motherwell that same season). It was the first time I remember associating football with sadness. 16 years later, it has come back to hurt me all over again 😔
