Free Agency 2021

Bills have released John Brown and Quinton Jefferson, which were probably the two most obvious moves to free up cap room, $14.5m

Brown was really good in his first season but injured a lot last year and Gabe Davis showing up well as a rookie helped make that decision. He'll get another team no problem.

Jefferson was just a bit of a FA bust. Might have been offered a restructure on lower money but refused.

Lions have opted not to tag DE Romeo Okwara. Okwara was the Lions best player on defence last season putting up 10 sacks despite the little help surrounding him. Those 10 sacks were more than his entire sack output combined across all prior seasons since joining the league in 2016.

Both Fisher and Schwartz are likely to miss the season so probably won't get picked up. There's talk Schwartz will retire - he's been one of the best right tackles of the last decade.

Safe to say the Chiefs are taking a tackle at 31.

Matt Milano stays in Buffalo which is contrary to basically what every Bills beat writer had said would happen 😂

Excellent news but the flipside is that there's far less in the kitty for a notable free agent addition, especially at tight end or DL.

Daily dump of Lions stuff:

Reports suggest CB Justin Coleman who signed a 4 year $36 million deal in 2019 will be released. Lions would save $4.9 million with a normal release or $9 million with a June 1 designation.

The terms of the deal for WR Tyrell WIlliams have also been clarified & is different than initially reported.

Last week, the Detroit Lions signed free agent wide receiver Tyrell Williams. The deal was initially reported as a one-year deal worth “up to $6.2 million.” Later, Ian Rapoport reported that it came with a base salary of $4.7 million.

However, more contract details came out this week and while the first part of the initial report is technically true—$6.2 million is the absolute maximum of this deal—the second ($4.7 million base salary) is completely false. Instead, the Lions have found themselves an extremely affordable deal that will only cost Detroit $3 million in cap space for 2021.

ESPN’s Field Yates has the details here.

Here’s the important breakdown. For 2021, Williams will have a guaranteed base salary of $2 million to go with a $2 million signing bonus. The Lions also added a voidable year to the contract to split the cap hit of that $2 million signing bonus between the two years. Hence, the cap hit for 2021 is $2 million base salary plus $1 million for the signing bonus, with a $1 million cap hit from the signing bonus in the voided 2022 season.

Then there’s the $2.2 million in incentives available for Williams. The details on those incentives are still not known, but they will not count against this year’s cap. Incentives are split into categories based on last year’s performance: “Likely to be earned” (LTBE) or “not likely to be earned” (NLTBE). LTBE incentives count against this year’s cap (and are returned if not earned the following year). NLTBE incentives, if earned, count against the following year’s cap.

Because Williams missed all of last season, all of his incentives are considered NLTBE. Therefore, however much of that $2.2 million in incentives Williams ends up earning will count against the 2022 cap.

Here’s the basic financial breakdown.

2021

Base salary: $2 million (guaranteed)
Signing bonus proration: $1 million
Cap hit: $3 million
Dead cap if cut: $4 million

2022 (voided)

Signing bonus proration: $1 million
Incentive bonuses: Up to $2.2 million
Cap hit: $1 million (up to $3.2 million)

You can have 1 of our 78 TEs.

Actually, we are bound to lose one of Hicks, Mack, Robertson-Harris or Goldman on the DL. Can't afford to keep them all.

It's a 1 year deal, really. It voids after 1, which is just to manage the cap.

Yep.  The QB knows how to win, and this is a masterstroke from him/the numbers guy.  Basically his money due is gonna paid over 4 rather than the 1.

Chargers have released Trai Turner, the latest in a string of former Probowl calibre OL who sign for us then play like utter shit. He was never fully healthy last year, but I don't think that explains just how bloody awful he was. Considering how poor our line was overall, you really have to go some to be the absolute worst of a bad bunch, and he fought Dan Feeney hard for that dishonour.

Absolutely no way they could have justified trying to keep him around and see if he bounced back.

No doubt we'll go into 2021 with Bryan Bulaga still pencilled in at RT then have to try and pretend to be shocked when he plays about 5% of the total snaps, again.

Did Bill watch any Pats games last year?

That makes less than no sense.

I actually don't think it's that bad a move. While he was utterly honking last year, it's a cheap deal, and it won't be a problem to sit him if the Pats either acquire a better veteran between now and training camp, or draft a young QB that they think could play in 2021.

Failing that, they can take the line that they think 2020 was an anomalous down year, that Cam should play better with an improved supporting cast, and use him as a placeholding starter.

Already seen a few tweets from Patriots players backing Newton, saying this year will be different as he will be there for all of the training camp this time.
