Statistical Milestones 2020/21

Forgot to start this but here we are.

Due to Rangers consistent form St Johnstone, Ross County, Motherwell and Hamilton have already been eliminated from this seasons title race.

A St Mirren defeat to Dundee Utd coupled with a Rangers win over Hibs will also eliminate them from title contention.

A Rangers win or Utd failing to pick up all 3 points will extend the Arabs wait for a second title.

Anything other than a Killie win over Livi and a Rangers defeat to Hibs will see Killie's 56 year wait for a league flag extended.

Both Killie and Dundee Utd eliminated from the title race during the week but St Mirren absolutely hounding Utd keeps title hopes alive in Paisley, doing their goal difference no harm into the bargain.

However, defeat at Parkhead on Saturday will see the wait for a first ever top flight flag continue for the Buddies.

You're welcome, St Mirren.

I feel it's very statistically important to flag that every team in the league, with minimum 24 games played, has now surpassed Heart of Midlothian Football Club's total of four (4) wins last season.

Again, you're welcome, St Mirren

Aye but there were about to go on an 8 game winning streak, didn't you know that.

I think they need 7 more wins to avoid relegation to League 1

St Mirren kept their hopes of glory alive with a win at plucky underdogs Celtic. A full programme of midweek action.

Celtic can secure a Top 6 finish with a point against Kilmarnock or even in defeat if Motherwell v Dundee Utd ends in a draw.

Should Rangers beat St Johnstone, the Buddies charge to the title will be ended, a draw for St Mirren will keep them in the race only if Rangers lose to the Perth Saints.

Livi can also be ruled out of the running for a first ever title should they fail to match Rangers result.

St Mirren crash out of contention for the title in midweek but the Livi Lions continue to stalk the Bears. Celtic do manage to stumble over the line to a Top 6 finish.

Livi will be eliminated from the title race with anything other than a win and a Rangers defeat this weekend.

A Rangers win will also see Hibs' Championship wait extend should they fail to beat Aberdeen. A fate that will also befall the last team outside Rangers and Celtic to capture the flag, should they be the losers at Easter Rd. A draw will keep the Dons going regardless of the Rangers result, while that would only do Hibs coupled with Hamilton picking something up at the FOYS. Thus a Rangers victory will secure them a them a top 4 finish and a draw a top 5 finish.

Both Aberdeen and Hibs can seal Top 6 finishes this weekend. Hibs are required to better Motherwell's result while Aberdeen require a victory coupled with a Motherwell loss.

Out of curiosity, when did Rangers secure a top six spot?

And do you know how much later Celtic are this year in securing theirs compared to previous years?

Forgot about this weekend but a couple of midweek games.

Celtic can secure a Top 5 finish, which will be enough for European football (if the Scottish Cup isn't completed or won by the Top 2) with a victory over Aberdeen, coupled with a Hamilton win over St Mirren. This scenario would also rule St Mirren out of Champions League contention.

The Dons can clinch a Top 6 finish with a win over Celtic.

The Buddies have the aforementioned carrot of remaining in the Champions League race ahead of them with Hamilton the only club in midweek action without anything really to play for.

With the Scottish Cup looking like it won't be completed this season, Celtic have secured European football with their midweek win over Aberdeen.

This weekend. Rangers can secure a Top 2 finish and rule Hibs out of the title race with a point against Dundee Utd or if Hibs fail to beat Hamilton.

Celtic can secure a Top 4 finish with a win over Ross County coupled with a Livi defeat to St Mirren which would rule the Lions out of Champions League contention.

Aberdeen have another opportunity to seal a Top 6 finish with victory over Kilmarnock or if Dundee Utd fail to beat Rangers.

St Mirren and Livi face off in Paisley to attempt to remain in the running for the Champions League. The only scenario eliminating Livi would be the aforementioned, the only scenario keeping St Mirren in the race would be a victory, coupled with a Celtic defeat in Dingwall.

At the bottom. Failure to beat Celtic will see Ross County consigned to the bottom 6 if coupled with a victory for either Dundee Utd or St Mirren.

Hamilton will suffer the same fate should they lose to Hibs and either the Buddies or Arabs win.

A draw for Killie may be enough to keep their top 6 hopes alive, but only if both St Mirren and Dundee Utd lose. A Killie win at Pittodrie would still not be enough if either of the aforementioned were to win.

A point for St Mirren against County or a Dundee Utd against Killie win will see Hamilton condemned to the bottom 6.

If County fail to beat St Mirren, they will finish in the bottom half. Should the Staggies keep their top 6 dream alive, a Hibs win against Motherwell will mean 4th will be the limit for the Dingwall side.

Motherwell must better St Mirrens result to keep their slim top 6 hopes alive although they could still be scuppered by a draw, if Dundee Utd win.

So, we now know Rangers, Celtic, Hibs and Aberdeen will play in the Top 6 after the split and that Hamilton, Kilmarnock, Ross County and Motherwell will play in the Bottom 6.

Two top 6 places up for grabs and beaten league cup finalists Livi can get over their Hampden disappointment by claiming one with a victory over Rangers in midweek. The Hamilton v St J game has nothing definitive riding on it.

So, the second last full programme of fixtures before the split throws up quite a few possibilities.

Rangers will clinch a first top flight title should they better Celtic's result this weekend.

Celtic can however keep the title race alive by matching Rangers' result and will clinch a Top 3 finish if they can match Aberdeen's result over the weekend, thus eliminating the Dons from Champions league contention.

Livi will clinch Top 6 football with a victory over Motherwell or with any result if both St Johnstone and Dundee Utd fail to win their fixtures.

St Mirren face similar permutations, victory against Rangers will guarantee a top 6 place but defeat or a draw will suffice if both the Perth Saints and Dundee Utd lose.

Utd must pick up at least a point to keep Top 6 hopes alive but that will only be enough if St Mirren lose. As mentioned above victory may still not be enough if both St Mirren and Livi win.

St J must win at home to Hibs to keep any hope of the Top 6 alive but a point for Livi and a St Mirren win would render a victory meaningless.

So Livi sealed a Top Half Finish at the Weekend with a game to spare meaning there is one place up for grabs going into the last weekend of pre-split fixtures.

Celtic can clinch 2nd spot and a place in the Champions League qualifiers with victory over Rangers coupled with a Hibs defeat at the hands of Livingston.

Hibs can seal a Top 5 finish if they beat Livi, however a draw would be enough if St Mirren fail to beat Hamilton and defeat would suffice should the Buddies and St Johnstone both fail to win.

A point will be enough for St Mirren to clinch a top 6 spot, if St Johnstone fail to beat Ross County. A St Mirren draw coupled with any sort of St Johnstone win will see the Perth Saints pip the Paisley Saints on Goal Difference. Defeat for the Buddies could see Dundee Utd claim a top 6 finish, however it would require a St Johnstone failing to beat County, a Utd win against Aberdeen and a 7 goal swing in Goal Difference in favour of the Arabs in comparison with St Mirren.

If Dundee Utd and St Johnstone both miss out on the Top 6, they could both rule themselves out of the automatic relegation place should they win and both Hamilton and Kilmarnock lose. Should St Mirren fall into the bottom half, they would be safe from the automatic drop if Hamilton and Killie lose.

The first set of Post Split fixtures saw Celtic secure second place in the table and St Mirren and Dundee Utd safe from the Automatic relegation spot. Utd are also safe from the playoff spot.

In the next round of fixtures in the top Half. Hibs can seal a Top 4 finish and guaranteed European football by avoiding defeat against Livingston while Aberdeen will secure a Top 5 finish unless they lose to Celtic and St Johnstone beat Rangers. The Dons could also secure a Top 4 finish and with it a continental adventure should they beat Celtic and Livi fail to beat Hibs.

In the bottom half Dundee Utd will secure a Top 9 finish unless they lose to Kilmarnock and Ross County beat St Mirren. If County fail to beat St Mirren, the Buddies will also finish no lower than 9th.

Motherwell will save themselves from the Automatic drop by avoiding defeat against Lanarkshire rivals Hamilton and if they better Kilmarnock's result against Dundee Utd, they will be safe from relegation completely. Well could also guarantee a Top 9 finish should they beat Accies and both County and Killie fail to win.
