Help Please : Refreshment Stands

Recommended Posts

Tucked away under the old main stand at Brockville. Tea, Oxo, pie...  Getting Kenco was pretty innovative. No poncy scampi & tuna on this menu.

That's the one I went to every week for years, as a denizen of the South Enclosure.

I always used to (still do) get my pie and coffee before the game at 2.15 or something. Enjoyed munching it in peace while it was still "just about" lunchtime. Half time is for reading the programme. Besides, you'll just ruin your appetite for your dinner if you are eating a pie at pretty much 4pm.

I see what you did there, RB. Highly amusing. Have a greenie.

I always liked that its signed as a "buffet", not some mere 'pie stall'....Standing in the queue for the 'buffet', wondering what delights to try on any given Saturday...Finger rolls and mushroom canapes?  Vol-au-vents or chocolate ganache?  Nope, the options were hot flavoured water in a cup, and Fisher's pies.  No nonsense.

Did we not also have some sort of large plastic Bovril jar that they used to serve pies from? I was a young whippersnapper so my memory is hazy. I’ve tried to find a picture on google but had nae luck.

There also used to be a refreshment stall at the Silverton end side of the old pavilion before it was upgraded.

Yep, and for a short spell in the boom days of the early/mid 1970's there was also one on the north end wall of the stand directly opposite the Henhoose.

I attach the picture in my avatar which shows the Turnberry End at Boghead - I think it dates from the late 1980's.  The two-window block at the left-hand end was a refreshment stall  with serving hatches on both sides, ie on the outside and via a small stair on the covered terracing.

The Turnberry name came from the club buying the roof, lattice girderwork and pedestals of the Ayrshire railway station in the 1950's.; I think the pie stall was their own design !

I loved going to boghead,  great wee walk from the train station, change of ends at half time. Remember playing dumbarton in Scottish cup there, as well as league games at the wrong end of the table in late 70's early 80's?cracking memories of s superb wee ground.

I’d read that Clyde were planning on introducing a Tuna & Scampi pie for this season but obviously no supporters have had access. Intrigued to taste it.

I remember thistle doing a cheesy bean pie not idea if it still exists?

Indeed it does.  Along with the Mr Singh's Curry Pie which I think still existed when Firhill was open.

More on tpic, we also branched out into pizza.  I assumed because we had some links with Pizza Express that we'd be talking something approaching that.  Noooooo.  If you ever get the chance to partake, don't.
