Even if there is no snow, 3G pitches can be unplayable. They are not "all weather" pitches.

But it takes an enormous amount of people, effort and time to sweep snow off an entire football pitch. Not many clubs at our level have the necessary resources to do that.

And generally, if it's cold enough to snow, the surface underneath the snow wouldn't be playable once swept, whether artificial or grass.

3G pitches need a crumb of rubber pellets. Removing snow from the pitch can also pick up the pellets, so it would need another dose of them before being playable, which is a major task. So that shouldn't be attempted without the specialist equipment needed to remove snow without affecting the pellets.

So in most cases, snow cover does for 3Gs, even before considering whether the playing surface is frozen hard or not.

They never have been 'all weather'.

Rutherglen Glencairn v Hurlford United tomorrow night is now also postponed. A couple of miles along the road at Queen's Park there are hundreds of people walking on the pond, sledging, walking dogs, ice skating, and even playing ice hockey !

Not hugely relevant at the moment with the lack of spectators, but there's also the safety aspect of the ground environs and safety of travel to consider as well when it's snowy and icy.
