Sad news for anyone who thinks a 2.2 is quite a good degree.

I wonder if Douglas Hurd will be next then or Geoff Hurst.

I got a 2.1 (GIRUY Welshy) but I don't remember any rhyming slang for that.

Week 52 update

Two deaths this week, both of which ruining many teams entered for 2022. First up, cricket man Ray Illingworth: Ray Illingworth, former England cricket captain and coach, dies aged 89 | Cricket | The Guardian

Quote

The former England captain Ray Illingworth has died at the age of 89, Yorkshire cricket club announced on Saturday. Illingworth, one of the few men to lead England to a Test series victory in Australia, in 1970-71, had been undergoing radiotherapy for esophageal cancer.

Illingworth played 61 Tests between 1958 and 1973, scoring 1,836 Test runs at an average of 23.24 and claimed 122 wickets at 31.20. He captained England 31 times, winning 12 of those matches.

Illingworth went on to become was the chairman of selectors for England between 1994 and 1996, and coached the team in 1995-96.

Born in Pudsey, Yorkshire, in 1932, his cricketing talents were apparent early when he averaged more than 100 with the bat for his school and showed proficiency as a medium-pace bowler, later adopting spin. Both deliveries saw him take many wickets for few runs.

He was also a talented footballer and had opportunities to play at two local clubs, Huddersfield Town and Bradford City. But it was his abilities with a small, hard red ball for Farsley in the Yorkshire League that quickly brought him to the attention of Yorkshire county coaches. He excelled for Yorkshire’s seconds and made his debut for the first XI shortly after his 19th birthday.

Illingworth grew in stature, soon coming to the fore in a talented Yorkshire side who won seven county championships in 10 years – for three of which he was captain - between 1959 and 1968.

That is certainly an assortment of cricket numbers. Illingworth died at 89, so he's worth 36 Base Points. He was a Vice-Captain and Solo Shot for @ToBeSomeone which along with the Deadly December bonus amounts to 140 points. Not bad for a Zero-Pointer.

Second death this week was South African religious man and professional rhyming slang, Desmond Tutu: Anti-apartheid hero Archbishop Desmond Tutu dies aged 90 | Desmond Tutu | The Guardian

Quote

Desmond Tutu, the cleric and social activist who was a giant of the struggle against apartheid in South Africa, has died aged 90.

Tutu, described by foreign observers and people in his country as the moral conscience of the nation, died in Cape Town on Boxing Day.

“The passing of archbishop emeritus Desmond Tutu is another chapter of bereavement in our nation’s farewell to a generation of outstanding South Africans who have bequeathed us a liberated South Africa,” the president, Cyril Ramaphosa, said.

“From the pavements of resistance in South Africa to the pulpits of the world’s great cathedrals and places of worship, and the prestigious setting of the Nobel peace prize ceremony, the Arch distinguished himself as a non-sectarian, inclusive champion of universal human rights.”

Tutu was diagnosed with prostate cancer in the late 1990s and in recent years he was hospitalised on several occasions to treat infections associated with his treatment.

“Ultimately, at the age of 90, he died peacefully at the Oasis Frail Care Centre in Cape Town this morning,” Dr Mamphela Ramphele, acting chairperson of the Archbishop Desmond Tutu IP Trust and coordinator of the office of the archbishop, said in a statement on behalf of the Tutu family.

She did not give details on the cause of death.

Not a good month for fans of the abolition of apartheid with both Tutu and F.W. de Klerk going. They made the world a better place. Isn't that all anyone wants?

Tutu was 90 when he died, so he's worth 35 Base Points with a Deadly December bonus doubling that to 70 points for @CountyFan, @Moomintroll and @Salvo Montalbano.
