Week 40 update

Three deaths this week. Up first, former Liverpool and England player Roger Hunt: Roger Hunt obituary | Football | The Guardian

Quote

The footballer Roger Hunt, who has died aged 83, was a key member of the England team that won the World Cup in 1966, appearing in all six games in the finals and scoring three goals in the process. He was also one of Liverpool’s all-time greats, winning two First Division titles and an FA Cup at Anfield in the early 1960s and becoming the club’s highest league scorer – a position he retained, with only Ian Rush surpassing him in all competitions.

However, for all his feats Hunt was occasionally a target for criticism from the footballing public, not least because in 1966 he had inadvertently taken on the role of the man who kept Jimmy Greaves out of the World Cup final.

Greaves was a more prolific goalscorer, but Hunt was the one chosen for the match at Wembley. After England’s 4-2 victory over West Germany, some criticised him for missing the kind of chance that Greaves would have taken, but the pragmatic England manager, Alf Ramsey, stayed loyal to him, emphasising the way that Hunt “made space” for other people even when he was not rattling in goals.

The England captain, Bobby Moore, was also confident of Hunt’s qualities, once observing that he was a “player’s player”.

“I am accustomed to criticism, and I have had more than my share,” the fair-haired Hunt observed. “At one time it used to bother me, but as time has gone by I have learned to accept it. I don’t lose sleep over what people say about me. I know I’ll never please some folk. But that never stops me from going out and doing my best.”

In all competitions he scored 285 goals in 492 games for Liverpool. He won two league titles and an FA Cup. He also scored the first goal ever seen on Match of the Day.

He had an unremarkable international career.

Hunt died at 83, so he's worth 42 Base Points for @10menwent2mow, @dagane and @Empty It.

Second death this week was Greg Gilbert of the band Delays: Greg Gilbert, frontman with indie band Delays, dies aged 44 | Music | The Guardian

Quote

Greg Gilbert, frontman with British indie rock band Delays, has died of bowel cancer at the age of 44.

He had been diagnosed in 2016, and documented his illness in poetry, visual art and on social media. In August, he announced he had stopped taking treatment and was using only pain relief. He wrote on Twitter: “I still believe in magic, the power of a good gesture and laughter. I want to fill the days ahead with all of these and so much more.”

Formed in Southampton, Delays emerged from the fertile indie scene of the early 00s, though their tendency towards psychedelia and bright pop – topped with Gilbert’s striking, sometimes falsetto vocals – distinguished them from their peers.

First named Corky, the quartet changed their name to Idoru and released their debut EP in 2001. In 2003, they renamed themselves Delays and signed to Rough Trade Records, who released their debut album Faded Seaside Glamour in 2004. It reached the UK Top 20, as did the anthemic single Long Time Coming. Two further albums, You See Colours (2006) and Everything’s the Rush (2008), both reached the Top 30, though fourth album Star Tiger Star Ariel (2010) did not chart.

I listened to one of their songs when this news came out and it was actually alright. It doesn't sound like it's from 2007:

I don't know what his date of birth is, but Gilbert died at 44 for 81 Base Points. He was a Solo Shot for @chomp my root which gives a total of 131.

Final death this week is French businessman and former Marseille owner Bernard Tapie: Scandal-ridden French tycoon Bernard Tapie dies aged 78 | France | The Guardian

Quote

The French business magnate and former politician Bernard Tapie, whose larger-than-life career was marked by a series of legal problems, has died aged 78, four years after being diagnosed with cancer.

“Dominique Tapie and his family have the immense sadness to announce the death of her husband and their father, Bernard Tapie, this Sunday,” his family said in a statement to La Provence newspaper in Marseille, in which Tapie was a majority stakeholder.

One of his sons, Stéphane Tapie, confirmed his father’s death with a post of “Goodbye my Phoenix” on Instagram.

The statement said: “He left peacefully, surrounded by his wife, his children and grandchildren, who were at his bedside,” adding that he wished to be buried in Marseille, “the city of his heart”.

Tapie came from modest beginnings in a rough corner of Paris but became one of France’s most successful and high-profile businesspeople, flaunting his wealth with American-style flair.

He was the longtime chairman of the Olympique Marseille football club, bought a cycling team and also found time to act, taking roles that included that of a police inspector on a popular TV show.

Tapie also dabbled in politics, becoming urban affairs minister in the Socialist government of François Mitterrand in the 1990s and later a member of the French and European parliaments.

But his empire collapsed spectacularly in the late 1990s, beginning with a match-fixing trial after which he served time in jail.

He later faced prosecution over his purchase of the German sports brand Adidas in 1990, which he was forced to sell a few years later to the state-owned bank Crédit Lyonnais.

A court found him guilty of fraud over an arbitration settlement with the bank – he claimed he was cheated on the sale price – and an appeal court is due to issue its ruling on Wednesday.

Seems like a laugh. Let's take a closer look at that match-fixing scandal, shall we? Bribery, match-fixing and alleged doping – the story of Marseille’s tainted Champions League victory | Goal.com

Quote

A trip to Valenciennes the weekend before was thus a must-win match. Marseille came out on top 1-0 against surprisingly lacklustre opponents, allowing them to go on and win the title, but it soon emerged that all had not been as it had seemed.

At half-time during the game, Valenciennes player Jacques Glassmann told coach Boro Primorac that he had been offered money to “lift his foot” by both Marseille player Jean-Jacques Eydelie, a former team-mate at Nantes, and Marseille director Jean-Pierre Bernes.

It transpired that Valenciennes players Jorge Burruchaga and Christophe Robert had also been offered money and that Robert’s wife had quite literally picked up a bag of notes from the parking lot of the Marseille team’s hotel. It was later found buried in the garden of the mother-in-law of the player.

A criminal investigation was opened on June 8, 1993, and so followed months of claims and counterclaims.

On the field, the following season, Marseille were denied the right to defend the Champions League by UEFA – though they were never stripped of their title – while domestically they were condemned to relegation by the French FA in April, despite sitting second in the league, where they would finish the campaign behind Paris Saint-Germain.

Within months, the club was forced to file for bankruptcy and it was only when adidas owner Robert Louis-Dreyfus took over in 1996 that they were able to return to the top flight. The perilous state of their finances in previous years had seen the league’s strict financial watchdog, the DNGC, refuse to grant them a top-flight licence previously.

The key actors in the drama, meanwhile, were handed prison sentences. Tapie was sentenced to two years in jail, including eight months non-suspended, for complicity of corruption and subornation of witnesses while Bernes, who has since become an agent, was handed a similar punishment, albeit with just three weeks non-suspended.

I was so young I'm not sure what team lost out on potential Champions League glory as a result of this. I'm really old though, so I'm sure they're probably dead or something.

Tapie died at 78, so he's worth 47 Base Points. He was a Solo Shot for @Bishop Briggs for 97 points total.

On a somewhat serious note: French football bribery scandal - Wikipedia

In a 2011 ITV interview, Rangers footballer Mark Hateley alleged that he had been offered money by Marseille to not play in the Champions League match between the two sides,[43][44] although Hateley ended up being suspended for the match after being sent off in Rangers' previous match against Club Brugge.[45] Rangers eventually failed to qualify from the group stage by one goal after drawing 1–1 with Marseille in the penultimate group stage match.[4] In 2010, Walter Smith, Rangers manager at the time, said that he believed Rangers had been cheated out of a Champions League final and a likely chance to win the trophy.[42] UEFA chose not to investigate Hateley's allegations and claimed that Marseille's ban from the 1993–94 UEFA Champions League was sufficient punishment for the club.[46]

Walter Smith and Ally McCoist against Baresi and Maldini. Very good.

Well, bearing in mind that Marseille beat them it doesn't seem that wild to speculate that they might have had a chance. They'd have been underdogs, clearly, but not more so than, say, Steaua Bucharest or Villa were when they won it.

I'll be sad when the entire England 66 team are gone, mainly because we won't see the "unremarkable international career" line in deadpool anymore.

Chin up, if you keep playing the Dead Pool until the current crop start dropping you can see "His international career was summed up by a European Championship final defeat to Italy in his home stadium which had twice as many fans in it as it should have." several times.

Gareth Southgate

"He shat it in the business end of the Euros as a player and manager"

I look forward to that. I intend to see Grealish out.

I appreciate he's very much alive, but I had a very vivid dream regarding the sudden demise of Graeme Souness. This dream included Sky Sports TV coverage of the funeral and even a Dead Pool quip (Graeme Too Souness).

Unfortunately, unlike dreaming the name of the winning horse in a race, it's very hard to monetise my new-found prophetic ability. But if Souness were to curl up his toes by the end of the year, could I get some sort of honorary award from the Dead Pool?

Don't know about an honorary award but you can expect a few PM's.

The way to monetize your prophesies in here is to stick all your premonitions in next year's team.

I don't think that would be the biggest shock in the world. He's already had at least one triple heart bypass and is also a permanently angry Rangers fan.
