Because his style of play isn't suitable for a side challenging for titles. Much better suited being the underdog.

No doubt a good manager who I hope stays at Scotland for longer but he isn't what they need.

And yet Walter Smith managed to win several titles with Rangers with a not dissimilar mindset. Clarke would be a very good manager for Celtic, I have no doubt he would win trophies and league titles, and probably do better in Europe than Lennon (or Rodgers). He wouldn't win the league every year, because with how Rangers are now that's no longer the home run it was, but he would definitely be a massive upgrade on Lennon. It goes without saying that I hope he doesn't take it.

If Liverpool hadn't recalled Danny Ward at the eleventh hour (due to their reserve keeper's shocker in an FA Cup tie at Exeter), I think the Dons could have won the league that season. We won both home fixtures against Delia's team, which is always a good start.

As it was, we made do with a goalkeeper from Feb onwards called Scott Brown, who specialised in throwing the ball into his own net.  Rooney getting injured didn't help either, but it was Klopp taking Ward back that really f**ked us over.

Celtic didn't clinch the league until early May that season - which is probably still closer than any league for over a decade.

Aye, but they still won the league, I know we sort of blew it, but Celtic still won a competition they win quite often, what did they not win that a better manager would have won for them was the question.

Paul Lambert loved, and was loved by, Borussia Dortmund.

His Mrs wanted her lorne sausage and trips to What Everyone Wants so back he came. It is a very unlikely happening, but not entirely unthinkable.

A possibility that Lambert might be looking for a job as Ipswich are on the verge of an American takeover.

so how come celtic got shot of him then

Second season syndrome. We didn’t perform particularly well in Europe, we drew a few too many games and more importantly he lost the Scottish Cup semi to Rangers.

The only thing would have been possibly the Scottish Cup in his 2nd season. Loosing that semi to Rangers was the result that most remember him for and the beginning of the end for him. Other than that he won a double in his 1st season which was great

Lambert has been on the wain since Villa and the tractor boys support absolutely hate him cos he cant do what he did for Norwich

Why do you think he is automatically going to overturn Celtic's misfortunes just  os he used to play for them?

Lambert will be doing pundetry with Collins soon he hasn't got it anymore

The Europe thing is a bit of an understatement. He blew both sets of CL qualifiers, finished bottom of a really soft EL group, lost two cup semi's to Ross County and Mark Warburton's buccaneering Rangers side and, worst of all, nearly blew a title to Aberdeen Football Club.

I dunno if peoples judgement is being clouded because of how bad Lennon has been this season, but Deila wasn't a good manager and should never have been a candidate for the job. Which is probably reflected in the rumours that he was initially brought in to be Lennon's assistant, only for Lennon to see the writing on the wall and say "f**k that".

Bringing it back round to the current vacancy, if Celtic are doing this right, they'll hire a sporting director in the next few weeks, empower him with the ability to hire/fire his own manager, and you'll end up with someone in mid-May.

Anything else, and the process isn't right.

Oh. I know all about Ipswich fans hating Lambert, but Evans handed him a 5 year contract and the fans hate Evans even more.

Malky McKay local lad should definitely be made director of football or something with them since he left his Scotland performance director job in November

If Scotland can give him another chance then so can Celtic they gave worce people second chances like Torbett

And @AJF wondered why we thought this guy was a bigot.

Dons actually had a better team the following season - but by then we were up against peak Rodgers and were treble runners-up.........but much further behind in the league.

As much as I agree with your logic, you have to include Griffiths mental run of form that season. He dug Celtic out of more than a few holes.

I think this thread should be named

Who will be the next Scottland manager instead

Its obvious Clarke will take it after the Euroes

Hopefully they do something like that rather than bringing the new manager in early and giving him time to settle in. If they don't hit the ground running then whoever's managing them will be getting the shark treatment.

I can see them copying us with Murty and keeping Kennedy on if he gets a few wins, especially against us.

Steve Clarke is surely far too sensible to take a job at one of the Old Firm.

It would essentially rule out any opportunity for him to have a peaceful life up here once he retires, regardless of whether he was a success or not.

There is also his previous comments on sectarianism, etc, to take into account. I'll be shocked if it ends up being him.
