This is a good call. The spread in D&G is interesting - there's heavy infection at opposite ends of the region, but very little in between. Up to 4 January the positive test rate around Stranraer (pop3,598) is 2,000 per 100,000, while for Gretna (pop 4,055) it's 1,800 per 100,000. That's wild.

I realise there's been a number of postponements recently, but what do people think of friendlies being sanctioned at this time? Seen them organised across the leagues, and just feels rather unnecessary in the current circumstances.

I agree mate, absolutely no need for friendlies with all that’s going on!!

I wonder how the players feel about having to play just now. There will definitely be some players who aren’t comfortable with the situation. Players will be self employed, or have family members with health issues. I would imagine the majority would want to play but there will be some who don’t fancy it but maybe don’t feel confident enough to speak up and say there not playing. Might feel like there letting there teammates and club down.????

There is no way restrictions are going to be eased in February. The SG's own figures show cases rising well into March. We're probably a week or so away from one of the Central Belt hospitals being overwhelmed. Dumfries & Galloway has had a massive spike. Over the border in Carlisle, The Cumberland Infirmary is already at capacity with patients being transferred to Newcastle and Dumfries.

Following on from the statement from Dalbeattie

This just been posted on SoS FB page.

We’ve been a bit quiet recently... [emoji51]

We have seen all the comments, so what’s going on.... well!

There will be league fixtures this weekend, we will put them up on here tomorrow!

However, an EGM has been called for next week and will be about suspending the league!

The league will remain suspended, until the Dumfries & Galloway Authority area is removed from the current "Lockdown" restrictions if decided by the clubs at the EGM.

The SSFL is a Members Organisation. The Member Clubs make the decisions and decide what happens. The Members can make changes at any time by following the laid down procedures.
The Executive merely implement the Members decisions. It’s the member clubs that decide a way forward not the league

There has been significant negative publicity for SSFL over recent days on Social Media but hopefully this changes in the coming weeks [emoji119]

@TheFulshie

At a meeting tonight with the East and North Region Secretaries it was decided to suspend all football, training and friendlies until 6 February 2021, this will be reviewed again towards the end of January, this decision was fully backed by the Management Committee of the SJFA.

I understand why some would want it called, and I am strongly against it. Mental well-being of hundreds if not thousands being affected due to negligence of our current Scottish Cabinet. Any stats on the deaths of people under the age of 45? Where's the flu gone?

People die every day of the big C, and various other illnesses. People are dying due to operations being put on hold because of the ''FEAR'' of covid.

I'm chuffed to be able to get out the house socialise and train, especially given my coaching of a local youth side is on hold due to this.

Given that the rest of society is restricted to 'socialising' with one other person outdoors within their local authority area, your privilege to mix with literally dozens of people across a region is completely unjustifiable in the middle of a pandemic. It is not an essential activity for anyone involved, it is a glorified hobby.

Someone being involved in football whilst not taking Covid seriously is a danger to everyone you come into contact with.

i presume all these teams wanting to stop their seasons will hand back all the money that was given to them by the SFA from the Scottish Government recently?

Pretty sure they don't want to stop their seasons.

They just feel that it's the correct and safest thing to do.

The whole point is stop people doing what they want. The players who want to play could potentially pass the virus to someone completely unconnected to football.

I want to do things I enjoy as well, but I can't because of the restrictions in place.

And the scottish government is allowing them to play. So if its within the rules it should be if teams want to play. Again I think we should be stopping for January but it's not upto me so I dont know why the same people continue to come on who are nothing to do with eosfl teams or even from the areas to spout it.

You also get gordon jumping up and down about following the rules and shoulsnt have been doing this or playing football but let slip he came back somewhere on nyd at 11pm. Where he could he possibly be at that time but will spout his pish on here. Come on.

The Dalbeattie scenario raised at the FM briefing.

Basically suggesting they feel they are being forced to play or face penalty. Players are starting to become vociferous at wider dangers of spreading the virus to the home or workplace.

There has been remarkably little impact on EoS clubs from Covid and, indeed, across semi-professional football in Scotland generally. So far, there is nothing to suggest any greater risk in continuing. Jason Leitch made it clear that although the new variant of the virus is more transmittable that is only if you don't follow the protocols. The measures that have kept you safe so far will continue to do so. Therefore, so long as you follow them, the risk is no greater now than it was before.

This is not as severe a lockdown as in March. Many things that were closed in March are open now. That is with the support of the Scottish Government. If the experts thought semi-professional football was an unreasonable risk they could tell the SFA to stop it. Of course they would have to shut down all the leagues in which semi-pro teams play - right up to the SPFL Championship. If the SPFL clubs can play then the EoS clubs can play. The risk is no higher at Tranent, Camelon or Rosyth than it is at Alloa, Cove or Brechin.

If the clubs, as a whole, feel that they should suspend the league that would be disappointing to many but it is their right to do so. However, if the Scottish Government and the SFA are OK with football going ahead, and the EoS clubs decide to continue, they should not, in my view be criticised for it.

Why would you presume that?  Most of the clubs referenced in the articles are asking to postpone matches for January and February, with the season continuing when it is hopefully safe(r) to do so.  This is an entirely reasonable and responsible position to adopt.

The Scot Gov emergency funding for sport is to help cover lost revenue... and there will continue to be no revenue through those months for football and rugby clubs, albeit with reduced ongoing costs through that period.
