Is America becoming increasingly a failed state, yes abortion wasn't in the constitution but neither was concealed carry.

It's evil brilliance how the Republicans (Lindsay Graham in particular) have managed to manipulate the system to impose or overturn legislation apparently against the wishes of the majority of Americans. Probably helps that the folk running the opposition either don't care too much, or are mind-meltingly incompetent.

Anyway, most of them don't give a toss about what happens to foetuses - this is just cover for the main aim of the Religious Right, which is to punish people for engaging in promiscuous sex. The fact that it'll largely harm married couples with existing children is irrelevant.

I bet the Republicans are getting worried about the incoming midterms, most Americans are pro choice and pro gun control. They've given themselves total ownership of Supreme Court decisions by manipulating the nomination process.

And potentially couples who can’t conceive. Missouri has said they’ll take the stance that life begins at conception and any ending of it will be treated as capital murder, so should they proceed on that basis it outlaws IVF.

These folk aren't big on detail.

They've got no excuse either - they've been working so hard towards this for decades, through generations, that they should have this all planned out. Then again, maybe IVF is next on the list of abominations in the eyes of their God.

Honestly, I never thought they’d actually do it, it was the golden goose to keep the loonballs voting. Now that they have, there’s no fucking plan.

They'll go after all sorts now, same sex marriage, contraception, trans rights. I hope they as a nation can come through this but you get the feeling there will be potentially a dozen or so full on basket case states where they live in puriton times apart from the fully automatic assault rifles of course.

If it continues as the US appears to be going could we genuinely see the more progressive west coast states - CA, NV, OR, WA - thinking about going it alone or seceding to join Canada?

This is what happens when Christian fundamentalists get too much power in a supposed democracy - imposing their evangelical religious views on the majority.

If you can't seperate your religious views from your political views/decisions & vote on/make laws based on which fictional sky fairy you follow then you have no place being in elected politics when those decisions affect everyone of all religions or no religion at all.

The problem is that they need those loonballs to win elections. The Moral Majority & Tea Party crews aren't as big as they'd like everyone to believe, but the Republicans need their support, and they aren't interested in the consequences of their zealotry - only that they get their way.

It's the same phenomena as the government here pandering to wee groups of swithering village bigots to get the votes required to stay in office. Within reason, it doesn't matter what the rest of the country wants. The tail wagging the dog.

I'm not entirely sure that's accurate, gun control was a deep split along party lines so pretty much 50/50. However pro choice is the overwhelming majority of Americans.

But with the democrats running the Senate, the house and the white House then maybe they can get their act together and do something.

This is the crux of it for me. The pro-life lobby really don't give a f**k about the kids that will be born under this Draconian law. I've said elsewhere that all it'll do is increase the number of kids that are born into abject poverty/abandoned/given up for adoption/born with horrendous disabilities.  I'm sure the pro life mob will do the good Christian thing and ensure these kids are looked after by adopting them.

As for promiscuous sex, 11 of the states have no exemption for rape or incest. That's just staggering. Imagine telling a woman that she has to give birth to a child that every time she looks at will remind her of the time she was sexually assaulted. That's utter utter madness.

They'll say, "well, she can give it up for adoption".

Because they're a bunch of fucking sociopaths.
