MINCE PIE WATCH 2020

PRET MINCE PIES

SIZE:  Decent. Good height. 8/10
CRUST: Thick, really crumbly, but well fired 7/10.
FILLING: Big chunky fruit. 7/20.
LID: thick, but decent. 6/10
BONUS: f**k starbucks. 5/10.
PAIRING: Pair these with a return to lockdown.

M&S MINCE PIES

SIZE:  Ridiculously small. 1/10
CRUST: Fell to pieces. One even split in two through the axial plane. 1/10.
FILLING: Non-descript. Didn’t know it had cognac in it till I read the label. 3/10.
LID: meh. 5/10
BONUS: M&S generally do good food, but this is a slap in the face of mince pie aficionados everywhere. 0/10
PAIRING: Pair these with a box from a better high st retailer.

If tasting is brought to a premature end it’ll only mean 1 of 2 things: I’ve died, or there are no mince pies available. That being said, whoever is currently top will be declared MPW2020 winner.

Bit of a bakewell tart type flavour, could certainly taste the "amaretto laced mincemeat" right enough.

Nice warmed up, with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top

WAITROSE DUCHY ORGANIC ALL BUTTER MINCE PIES

SIZE:  Just right. 10/10. 
CRUST: Crunchy! Which is weird, but good! Nice buttery after taste. Tiny bit pale. 9/10.
FILLING: Decent, could’ve been a wee bit more of it. 8/10
LID: Plain. Pale. But fine. 5/10.
BONUS: A wee bonus award for the surprising crunchiness off the pastry. Curious! 3/10.
PAIRING: Pair these with a wee glass of Diversity of Terroir.

MPW2020 Score: 35/50.
