Forgotten football stories

The Archbishop of Dublin John Charles McQuaid in 1952 sucessfully lobbied the FAI into cancelling a friendly against Yugoslavia due to feeling Tito's government discriminated against Catholics. McQuaid called for a boycott when the countries met in 1955 but this failed.
Tito wasn't such a bad lad.

When Tommy Burns signed for Kilmarnock he had to be substituted at a game at East Fife's old Bayview Park  because he'd got hypothermia.

It was a bit of a cold ground was Bayview.

It was TB who told the story, Davie McKinnon was the f-f-f-f-frozen player.

Also regarding that game, the Killie team coach broke down so a replacement was sent. I believe the replacement also broke down so a fleet of taxis had to be phoned and the players only arrived at 2:50 so they were straight out the taxis, into the changing room and then out to play. TB must have wondered what the hell he'd done leaving Celtic for us at that point...

Also regarding the Saudi team at the 1990 youth WC, I spoke to Ross Mathie about it once and he had a theory about it that I can believe. His theory posits that a lot of the players came from small villages that would be visited by the taxman every few years or so. If kids were under a certain age they wouldn't have to pay any tax to the authorities, so when the taxman pointed at say a 7 year-old kid and asked how old he was, the parents would say 3 or 4 and they wouldn't have to pay the tax. That would make sense in taking into account the moustaches on some of their hairy-ersed "boys".

Ignoring the obvious age difference the Scottish boys should still have won. If Brian O'Neil could take penalties :(

That said it must've been a decent generation of Saudi players who went on to qualify for 4 consecutive World Cups.

Talking of dust ups between former players, remember ‘genial’ Chris Kamara decking former Jags and Celtic Striker Jim Melrose, Swindon Vs Shrewsbury back in the day! Interesting post match clip from then Swindon Boss Lou Macari and how things have changed in the game with regards to abuse. Recall Kamara received quite a lengthy ban for his reaction. Think he was probably the wrong one to mess with during his playing days.

The infamous mystery surrounding Aberdeens 5-0 defeat at McDiarmid v  St Johnstone in 1990,

Various versions have since been mooted but the common belief is that Hans Gillhaus, for one reason or another had not been on the team bus and arrived at McDiarmid not long before kick off.

Alex Mcleish had voiced his opinion that Gillhaus should not play having turned up late, and if the Dutch man did play he would not.

Alex Smith did start Gillhaus so Mcleish was omitted from the side due to" an injury picked up in the warm up" officially.

Also on the bus home there was said to be punches thrown involving various team mates

Tbf their group consisted of Djibouti, Babylon, a scorpion and a pile of sand.  We'd have made four in a row too.

He was never a favourite with the Meadowbank fans after making sneaky "w****r" signs at us when playing for Clydebank and we didn't fall for all that Daily Record "cheeky chappy" shite but I do remember him being fairly tall.
