Cyberpunk 2077

It looks phenomenal, I really hope it's as good as it has the potential to be.
I don't often buy games on release but we've got a baby coming at the start of Feb so don't think I'll get time to play it after that!

Not preordering off the back of that. Looks fine, GTA in a cookie cutter dystopian future, but not worth whatever they're wanting up front. I'll wait a couple of years for it to be cheap.

New gameplay demos out. Roll on November. Looks incredible.

Looks amazing but given the richness and depth of the narrative in Witcher 3 (not only the main story but the 2-7 hours long side quests which built a layered and amazing world around you), if the main story of Cyberpunk boils down to 'loads of gangs in a futuristic turf war...pick your favourite', I'm going to be bitterly disappointed.

In recent years, Borderlands have done it, Fallout have done it and Outer Worlds have done it.

Not having a bad word against Outer Worlds. If that had a bigger budget and more dev support that'd be a far better game than any of the Fallouts.

Outer Worlds has it's faults. The style of the artwork is fantastic and the humour is great. It plays well enough but character development is pretty meaningless. Specialising your character doesnt seem to make a huge difference and I havent been able to get into a 2nd play through so far. Also think that the weaponry and armour are generally pretty poor. Absolutely nothing interesting about much of them.

But back to Cyberpunk - looks great but the big worry would be that a game that has had so much development time may well have far too much expectation weighing it down. It looks good. It's going to be shorter than Witcher 3. I'm not sure thats the right move - I've seen the developers comment on complaints that gamers found Witcher 3 to be too long but I have absolutely no idea  why? It's epic scale allows for some incredible character development and a really immersive game world. Cyberpunk really needs that immersion and rich game lore.

Oh don't get me wrong. I enjoyed Outer Worlds.

It was nowhere near as good or immersive as New Vegas given the setting was a series of small maps rather than a singular open world but it was still a very enjoyable game even if, as pointed out already, that character specialisation makes little difference to the game.

I'm just looking for something a bit different from Cyberpunk.

Anyone complaining about the length of Witcher 3 has clearly not enjoyed it that much then. I could have happily played another 10, 20 hours without issue.

Reports I’ve read that it’ll be slightly shorter than the Witcher 3 but have more densely layered quests. Whatever that means.

I’m not that much of a gamer but quite like the cyberpunk genre in general, so that’s the main reason why I’ll be getting this.

Yep, that's my worry too (and the GTA vibes and cookie cutter dystopian future as another poster said).

I'm sure it'll be a 'good' game, maybe even great, but I'm doubtful it'll be the game I was hoping for/expecting.

That might just be my pessimistic nature talking/taking over though.

It’ll be a 7/10 once the hype dissipates

The Outer Worlds felt like a fun B movie with a 90 minute run time and since it was free on game pass I don’t really have any complaints about it. Couldn’t manage a second run through either as I felt I got everything I wanted out of it. The new DLC looks decent though.

I suspect the story will be like: go and build reputation with each faction then when it's the finale against Faceless Megacorp you'll call in favours across all of them, much like the end of Witcher 3. You'll probably get Dynamic Choices Affect Storyline!!!!1 where it changes which minor faction character turns up to hack some critical system/break down a wall at some critical moment etc.

7/10 looks about right imo.

I always worry with games that get so super-hyped, as it's almost inevitable they won't meet it.  I trust that CDPR will do a great job, and I put Witcher 3 as probably my favourite game ever, but nothing that has come out about the game itself is suggesting it's going to be this massive leap forward.  I saw a video on the vehicle stuff and it looked rank.

7 out of 10 seems about right, and there's not really anything wrong with that.  But I expect a lot of piss-babies are going to be acting like it's the worst thing ever because it hasn't met their pointlessly high expectations.

Yup.

I'd happily take a 7/10 fun playthrough if the story is engaging enough to keep me hooked.

The Witcher for example, the gameplay was very good but not my favourite ever, the story itself and depth of narrative pushed it to that level.

My most infuriating hipster take is that games/ movies that end up a 7/10 in the press are usually the most interesting anyway

I always find it best to completely ignore most reviews anyway.  If someone reviews something and says it's an absolute turd and 1/10 or something, then they're probably onto something, but anything above that and you're into completely subjective territory.  I wouldn't trust anyone - professional or otherwise - to tell me whether I'm going to like a game, as some that have been truly critically acclaimed I've found it hard to get into (Dark Souls, Breath of the Wild, any of the newer Batman ones) and others that have been more meh I've absolutely loved (Death Stranding, No Man's Sky, both of which hover around that 7 mark).

Actually, I may be too harsh on critic reviews, as you can still find some incredibly well-written pieces that are pretty fair and well-balanced, but unfortunately sites like metacritic can take that well-thought-out review, and drown it out with 400 people shitting all over it because there was a woman as a main character.

You're not being harsh, particularly since we have known for some time that any glowing 10/10 review is because money's changed hands.

Reviewers are generally babies anyway. I’ve noticed a trend across a few different types of media where the reviews that don’t assign a score are on balance better but not assigning a score is counter productive in terms of assigning any importance to the review since the all important meta critic score is unaffected by it.
