Scotland 2.0

I wouldn't have a manager. Really doesn't warrant a full time position. It just gives them too much time to overthink things. Set up a ranking systems for players, with a panel assessing from week to week. Top 10 goalscorers, target men, wingers, left backs etc. The top two fit and available in each position go in the squad for that game. You then ask the in form managers - just now it could have been Gerrard or McInnes, to take charge for the two games. The result would be players available who know their specialist role and a coaching team confident of winning. Keeps things fresh.

I think this is absolutely fucking lunacy and would never, ever work in any circumstance, let alone with an absolute basketcase of a country like us.

Know what though? It'd be a fucking laugh. Get it done.

Interesting, presumably if we were in the same situation as the Czechs we’d have to pick our team from the UK based players not just Scotland as there would be no issues with them travelling up from England/Wales. I’d expect we’d also ask retired players who are still at a good level back so Brown, McGregor, Snodgrass and McArthur (I would expect they would all come if asked as it’d be a one off emergency) I know McGregor spat the dummy a little but would anyone really say no if your country is begging you to turn out one last time in extreme circumstances, we should still be able to field a competitive team which on paper is stronger than what the Czechs fielded last night. It’d certainly have a lot more caps and international experience as there’s quite a lot of previously capped players not in the current squad.

Just out of interest I’ve used the FIFA20 database and listed the two highest rated players for each position except GK (not in our current squad). Interesting although defence looks pretty weak with 3 from Hearts.

Gordon Hearts
McGregor Rangers
Bain Celtic

Douglas Leeds
Forsyth Derby

Berra Hearts
Souttar Hearts
Halkett Hearts
Findlay Kilmarnock

Bardsley Burnley
Gray Hibs

Frasier Bournemouth
Murphy Rangers

Cairney Fulham
McArthur Crystal Palace
Brown Celtic
Shinnie Derby

Snodgrass West Ham
Phillips West Brom

Griffiths Celtic
Rhodes Sheffield Wednesday

I like it. Didn't realise I was such a mentalist...

David Gray must be one of the most overrated players in the last decade of Scottish football. Never really been a regular in the Scottish top flight and yet you often see people suggesting him for the squad.

SCOTTISH CUP WINNER !!!

The thing is though, what we do doesn’t work. Yet it’s the same wee cabal of folk who keep doing it over and over. In any other organisation, if you were doing something that for 22 years hasn’t worked, you’d change the system, not one wee part of it (the manager).

And absolutely give Dick Campbell a crack at a couple of games.

That's how the Scotland team was picked for decades with the selection panels.

I think you could pick a team out of that that would beat some of the dross of Europe, but they would definitely struggle against anyone even half decent.

Just like Scotland 1.0 then...
