The eredivisie is becoming a bit of a farce at the moment. Due to a very large number of Covid cases amongst players, various clubs struggle to even field a team. In a few cases clubs only had 3 or 4 players on the bench. Others had to include youth players in their match day squads.

I'd say what's happening in the Eredivisie is just a reflection of what is happening in the country as a whole, although the number of reported infections seems to have stabilised it's still not looking good, apparently tougher restrictions are being announced tomorrow, whether people will listen and whether any new restrictions will be enforced remains to be seen.

Watched the mid-season review show on Premier (might as well as I'm paying for it) and it was a riot who upfront and forward they are in interviews, also the highlights show of the weekend gone. Anyone down to about 6th is still in the title fight, and the Ajax vs PSV game looked class.

Premier are a bit intermittent of their Eredivisie coverage (as they often clash with Serie A and the Rugby) but they're back showing a lot more games this week, Ajax vs Twente looks very appealing, think Twente were the last side out with the big 3 to win the title.

Ajax & Cameroon  keeper André Onana has been banned for twelve months by UEFA after testing positive for Furosemide a medication used to treat edema

Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana has been banned from football for 12 months by UEFA after he tested positive for a banned substance.

Onana, 24, tested positive for the banned substance Furosemide, a diuretic, on October 30, according to Ajax.

His 12-month suspension is effective from today and applies to club and international football. Onana and Ajax have said they will appeal the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

Who is Onana?

Onana, 24, has been Ajax’s first-choice goalkeeper since the 2016-17 season. Onana helped Ajax reach the semi-finals of the Champions League in 2019 and the final of the Europa League two years earlier.

He is also a regular for the Cameroon national team and has won 18 caps. His suspension means he will miss the 2021 African Cup of Nations, which are scheduled to start in January 2022.

He is widely considered one of the best young goalkeepers in the world and has been frequently linked to a number of other European clubs, including Chelsea and Borussia Dortmund.

What happened?

Ajax say that Onana accidentally took a drug prescribed to his wife when he woke up on the morning of October 30 feeling unwell.

The drug, Furosemide, is not known to be performance enhancing itself, but can be used to mask the use of other kinds of doping, according to the World Anti-Doping Agency.

He subsequently failed an out of competition drugs test.

In a statement, Ajax said: “The disciplinary body of the football association has stated that Onana had no intention of cheating.

“However, the European Football Association believes, on the basis of the applicable anti-doping rules, that an athlete has a duty at all times to ensure that no banned substances enter the body.”

What has the reaction been?

Onana published a statement on Friday. “I mistakenly took it for an aspirin because the packaging was almost identical, which I greatly regret.

“I respect the UEFA Appeals Body, but I do not share their decision in this case. I consider it excessive and disproportionate as it has been acknowledged by UEFA that it was an unintentional mistake.”

Ajax’s managing director Edwin van der Sar said in a club statement: “We explicitly renounce performance-enhancing drugs, we obviously stand for a clean sport.

“This is a terrible setback, for Andre himself but certainly also for us as a club. Andre is a top goalkeeper, who has proven his worth for Ajax for years and is very popular with the fans.

“We had hoped for a conditional suspension or for a suspension much shorter than these twelve months, because it was arguably not intended to strengthen his body and thus improve his performance.”

What happens next?

Onana and Ajax have said they will appeal the suspension to CAS.

Is there any way to watch the Eredivisie in the UK apart from the one game a fortnight on Premier Sports?

Betting sites such as bet365 usually have matches, otherwise you're finding a stream on hesgoals or the likes.

The Eredivisie's record goal scorer & record appearance holder for PSV Willy van der Kuijlen has passed away aged 74.

PSV are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Mister PSV, Willy van der Kuijlen. The club legend died peacefully, aged 74.

Forever ‘Mister PSV’

Van der Kuijlen was a great person on and off the pitch. No player can match his legendary status at PSV and there is nothing equal to his achievements and successes. The striker, born and raised in Helmond, will forever be PSV’s all-time Eredivisie top goal scorer with an untouchable 308 goals in 528 league games. He was a PSV player for eighteen successive seasons, because of which he was made an honorary member of PSV. Van der Kuijlen, modesty personified, was known affectionately as Mister PSV while his powerful shot earned him the nickname Skiete Willy (‘shoot Willy’). After his playing career, Van der Kuijlen returned to PSV as youth coach and assistant coach and later as a scout and he also represented PSV in ceremonial tasks. As a two-footed player he will always be remembered for his technical skills, but above all for his goal-scoring prowess. Willy van der Kuijlen is and will be Mister PSV, forever.

The miracle from Helmond

Van der Kuijlen was raised in Helmond and started playing football at an early age. At the age of fifteen, he made his debut as a first-team player of local club HVV and impressed in the 1963-64 season by scoring 31 goals in 26 matches. His family recognized his talents and when he attended school to become a tiler, his father advised Willy to quit and try to earn a living as a professional football player, which was not plain sailing in those days. He was on PSV’s radar in 1963 but PSV were really interested in signing him one season later after he had proved to be a top clinical finisher for the Helmond amateurs. A great many Dutch clubs were keen to secure his signature of the miracle from Helmond but at the end of the day he chose PSV.

Ups and downs

The relationship between Willy and PSV has not always been a happy one and there were ups and downs in his career. Van der Kuijlen continued to find the back of the net and was crowned Eredivisie top scorer in 1966, 1970 and 1974. But he also struggled to meet the high expectations set by the outside world and frequently clashed with his coaches. Kees Rijvers, who was appointed PSV head coach in 1972, cleared the air with Van der Kuijlen and restored his confidence. Rijvers played Van der Kuijlen on the left wing, a position he had loathed before, along with Swedish striker Ralf Edström and they formed one of the best strike partnerships in Dutch football. Van der Kuijlen scored an astonishing 106 goals in four seasons. Van der Kuijlen was a real Real Madrid transfer target, but he stayed loyal to PSV for the rest of his life.

Finally got the recognition he deserved

Willy’s modesty prevented him from becoming a first-choice player of the Dutch national team. His international career was marred by frequent clashes with ‘those boys from Amsterdam’. He even withdrew from the Netherlands squad for the 1974 World Cup in West Germany and would never take part in a major tournament. One of the best Dutch players ever had to make do with  22 caps for his country, scoring seven goals in the process. Rijvers fortunately respected and valued Van der Kuijlen and handed him the captain’s armband in 1977. It was the most successful season in his career, when PSV clinched the Eredivisie title for the third time and won their first prize in a  European competition. They reached the final of the UEFA Cup and beat SC Bastia 3-0 at home, after a goalless draw in the first leg, with Van der Kuijlen scoring the third goal.

PSV are grateful for the invaluable contributions Van der Kuijlen has made to the club. Everybody at PSV sympathises with Willy’s friends and fans and with his family in particular and wish them much strength.

In a move of total hypocrisy I am all for a merger of the Eredivisie and the Belgian Pro League. This being discussed anywhere?

Save to say that tonight was not good for my heart... But we're back in the eredivisie!!! 🥳

Was at this game (as an ADO season ticket holder). What a disaster! Some of our fans are an utter disgrace, and nice to see some of them getting attacked by the police dogs afterwards!

You've got some good players. Azarkan was scary from an opposing fan POV, dunno if you'll be able to keep him on loan next season? I liked El Yaakoubi at the back too (although this is all based on two playoff games!).
