Enshrine the Military Covenant in UK Law

Is this not the point? I have a real issue with charities like “Help for Heroes” and similar.

If as a country, we see fit to send our people into harms way, we as a country should deal with the consequences. Not leave it to charity.

But that is my point.

Scotland has no say in how our armed forces are deployed.

It's the warmongers in London who make the decisions.

That's why we are policing the world so they can justify the billions spent on Trident and a couple of Aircraft carriers.

I have asked folk to support this petition.  It’s up to them if they sign it or not.

The topics you are highlighting/raising are for a separate thread/topic.  If you want to start one then please do and it leaves this thread dedicated to the Petition.

Thanks and have a nice night.

Don't be Stupid you Moron. He doesn't sweat

I just knew a pic of Nonce Andrew waiting in line at Woking Pizza Express would turn up eventually.  Is that a wee bead of perspiration on his forehead ?

Had to google the Covenant but it does sound like the Government are taking the pish as much as they did over the Vow. Don't see what's wrong with forcing them into putting vacuous promises into law.

If the petition gets enough support from all parts of the UK then hopefully it will become Law.

When it comes to medical care (physical and mental) that people need as a consequence of their time in the forces, it's absolutely right that the state has a reponsibility to provide that for them.

When it comes to anything else, why should folk who've been in the armed forces be entitled to anything that everyone else isn't. They choose to go into that profession and they're paid for it.

Pretty much this. No one should be jumping housing lists or getting preferential treatment because they made a career choice.

Raymond seems like a reasonable chap. Not as bitter as your usual seamen.

I was actually just gonna say this.

I suspect he and I have fundamentally opposing views on the military but (based solely on this thread as I've never come across him before) he comes across as a decent bloke and not an absolute melt.

I am a decent bloke.  If we all had the same views the World would be a poorer place.

Unfortunately whilst serving you don’t establish a “home” for your family.  They travel to new posting location without support of family and friends. But whilst serving you are guaranteed a Married Quarter or Single Service Accommodation.  So should Service Personnel register with local councils when they enlist so they don’t receive preferential treatment?

I like how those employed in Defence apply titles to themselves (and/or have it applied to them) to set themselves apart from other workers.

Ex-employee/Retired = 'Veteran'

Carrying out job specifications, for which they are well salaried = 'Service'

The pedestal they have been set upon doesn't mean that they don't have the same access to housing and mental health services as other workers though.

Yes there may be causes of specific trauma which require more specialised and tailored mental health support for some, but the same is true of refugees and asylum seekers who have far more obstacles to housing and social/health services.

I'm sure the OP will be adding that petition any minute now.

The same could be said for students who move for university. Absolutely nobody thinks they deserve preferential treatment in housing.

One thing the Services taught me was Respect.

Respect for who (or is it whom?)

Respect for the civilians in the Glasgow area where Trident is based.

58 out of 59 Scottish MPs voted to get it out of Scottish waters yet it is still there.

Respect for the civilians who were bombed in Syria by British aircraft?

Respect for all the civilians elsewhere where the British Armed Forces have invaded their country.

Why do we act as if we are the policemen of the world?

Hopefully when Scotland is independent it will be the rUK who will have to decide if it will still carry on fighting battles overseas.

But this thread is under The Politics Forum.

And you haven't kept it solely to a petition.

You stated that the Services taught you respect.

Respect for who (whom?)

And you being a submariner you are the ideal person to ask what's your take on Trident being based just outside Glasgow?

Thanks.  I believe it’s a reasonable request to ask to sign petition.  If you don’t want to then that’s your decision.  One thing the Services taught me was Respect.  Treat folk the way you want to be treated. Have a nice but wet Scottish Monday.

You’re actually ok Raymond, hope the petition fails miserably to be honest. C8CDDD6B-C613-41DB-81A9-0E51A0186048.thumb.jpeg.3b773c21b812e4626177726b687d164c.jpeg

I, for one, am shocked by this revelation.

Unless everyone on the planet had the view that nuclear weapons should be disarmed and never armed again. That’d make the world a richer place, no?

“If we all had the same views, the world would be a poorer place” is almost always code for “I hold a number of atrocious opinions”

By remaining steadfastly gammon, I'm actually doing us all a favour.
