COVID-19 In Scottish Football

Recommended Posts

Pretty transparent bullshit from Celtic, imo. They've been caught out after shitting the bed and while Lawwell has admitted it was a bad decision, Lennon is digging in.

The emails may have been sent on the 12th, that was a month before wide ranging lockdown restrictions were put in place and two months before Celtic were sunning themselves in Dubai. The logic here seems to be one of a driver who is complaining that he's come off the road at a corner while doing 70mph because doing that speed on an earlier straight bit of road was fine.

Lennon, and whoever is in Celtic pushing the narrative, should just accept the optics of this are bad no matter how you spin it. Take the hit, say it was misjudged and move on. They don't have their troubles to seek on the field so keeping this going off it is just stupidity and no lack of arrogance considering the position the "ordinary public" are in.

2 playing staff tested positive - all other tested negative - Club say the ST Johnstone game will remain unaffected. Seems the club have had to release the statement due to the Sun article hours before. I wonder if we or others clubs have kept positive cases quiet in previous games.

Just out of interest, what essential function do Chief Execs fulfil at football games? And why aren’t they bothered about social distancing?
Guess they’re more important than regular fans.

SFA not following their guidelines.

The Scottish FA have apologised to Hibernian and Hamilton Academical after it emerged that one of the assistant referees for their game on Saturday should have been self-isolating.

Graeme Stewart, along with David Roome and Bobby Madden, oversaw Panathinaikos v Olympiakos in Greece last weekend.

Roome has since tested positive for Covid-19 and, although Stewart and Madden have returned two negative tests since returning, it was belatedly discovered that they should have been considered close contacts.

Madden was subsequently withdrawn from Ross County's game with Celtic on Sunday, but Stewart had already officiated at Easter Road

Both clubs were made aware of the issue on Sunday but, while all three officials are now self-isolating, no players or staff of either Hibs or Hamilton have been identified as close contacts.

The Scottish FA say chief executive Ian Maxwell has begun an investigation to "seek clarity on the breakdown in internal process".

"While the circumstances are complex, the reality is that under Scottish Government guidelines all match officials involved in the trip should be considered close contacts," Maxwell said.

"I have apologised to Hibernian and Hamilton Academical for the unnecessary risk of having an assistant referee at a match when he should have been self-isolating, however much it is mitigated by two negative tests in the build-up to the match."

Madden, Stewart and Roome were taking charge of the Greek Super League game at the request of Uefa and were tested before leaving Scotland.

I'm glad they clarified that Hibs and Hamilton players weren't identified as close contacts for a guy who wasn't anywhere near their game.

Why on earth are Scottish refs being flown across Europe to referee Greek league games?

They often get foreign referees in for big Greek games after one alleged match fixing scandal too many, there was a point a couple of years ago where Olympiakos said they would refuse to play Panathinaikos with a Greek referee.

Why they're persisting with this during a pandemic I don't know.

One of the officials involved in the greek game was the linesman at the Hibs-Accies match....pretty close to their game tbh

But to be a close contact, you have to actually be in contact with a person who tested positive, not some second hand "friend of a friend" thing. The assistant who took charge of the Hibs v Accies game did not test positive for covid.

But he SHOULD have been isolating as he was considered a close contact of a positive case.
