COVID-19 In Scottish Football

Kind of surprises me afresh each time that after nine months of witnessing a series of cataclysmic decisions by the Westminster Government, that some people in Scotland still look at every initiative from down south and wonder why we aren't following it.

Well how about the Scottish government explaining their rationale for allowing only 300 fans. Not seen any evidence provided by them for this limit and doubt that clown, Jason Leitch, has any to back this up. We had 100 people attend an indoor concert in Inverness last weekend yet only 300 fans entitled to attend ICTs game.  The Scottish government quite happy to recognise the good football does for communities when the national team qualified for the Euros but then totally ignore the game to provide help financially when it's so desperately needed.

Their rationale will be based on their judgement about the available scientific evidence, unless you believe there's a conspiracy against football. You can disagree with their approach, but all I was pointing out that following the example of anything down south hasn't generally been a good idea over the last few months  (Exhibit A: " Let's bring the bustle back to the High Street". Exhibit B: "Eat out to Help Out") It's telling that you're not asking for a rationale of the UK Government's approach. You just seem to assume it's right. Well if it is, let's see how it works. I imagine it will be a lot more restrictive than you think.

I think financially the only thing that will really help clubs is a vaccine and a reduction in the R number when they can open properly. That's what we should focus on. That's when we we'll be able to sit next to friends, move about when we want - and sing the songs we want to and when going back to football will be enjoyable. Clubs would only be losing money if they opened now, because they wouldn't be allowed away fans and hospitality would be shut in most cases. The only people who'd attend would be season ticket holders who've already paid. The policing costs would be huge.

I don't know what you mean about 'ignoring the game to provide help financially'.  What are you arguing - that the Government - stretched to the financial limit during the pandemic - should be paying money to clubs? If so, how much? Should it be split equally or do the big clubs get the most? Do we still give it to clubs whose players earn £20k a week? And do we apply this same generosity to all other sporting bodies or to all arts and community groups?

Love to see your rationale for that.

Let's say, for the sake of argument, that there is no definitive justification for capping crowds at 300 rather than 200 or 400 (or nil or 40,000) because the science simply isn't there to provide an arithmetical answer and there are too many variables to find the optimum sweet spot. What then? Capacity crowds or no crowds? Or do we simply have to accept that it's a judgement call, made in good faith. If not, what's your rationale for refusing to accept that?

There are more countries than just England with fans back.

Well well well. Is this not why we had to illegally cancel the season in March? So that clubs could get their money?

Now it emerges that despite the illegal relegations and all that other nonsense, the SPFL didn't even pay the clubs. What an absolute shambles from a corrupt organisation.

Though I must admit I have no sympathy for any of the clubs that voted to illegally relegate Hearts with #8gamestogo.

4 of the last 10 seasons the club's haven't received the money till the following year.

Add the current situation to the mix it's then hardly a surprise and probably less of a story than Mr English would have us believe.

Beat me to it a total non story yet again from the waining light that was Tom English. The fact not a single club has mentioned it publicly given the current financial constraints sums it up as a total English fluff piece.

Not sure if you’re taking the piss or not, but this is not the money that had to be paid out in April/May, just in case you’re not.

To be fair the largest team in the Championship was promoted to the Premiership a few months back, and those left there could be categorised as (a) lacking in ambition, or (b) having unfinished stadiums.

It is perhaps fairest to allow these teams time to sort themselves out and also ensures that everyone already in the Premiership can budget for next season with a degree of certainty.

Works for everyone, imo.

That the hugely successful and well run outfit called D Utd that had a team full of great youngsters but who sold them all at once while the manager pocketed bonuses and the owner didn't reinvest, resulting in relegation then four or five years in the Championship, only getting promoted again after going into 3m of debt and relying on a vote from their rivals to get them the title?

Or was it a few months longer ago when the hugely successful and well run outfit called Hibs that had a team full of great youngsters but who sold them all at once and didn't reinvest, resulting in a 10 year slide down the league to eventual relegation, then they took 3 years to get promoted despite paying Premiership wages the whole time, finally needing money so badly they sold a 15m player for about 3m to Aston Villa, then voted themselves down a place and lost around £100k just to stick the finger up at Hearts, then adapted to the pandemic by abandoning the youth system formerly known as the "conveyor belt of youth", ?

Industrial-grade brass neckery.

There's a lot of it about in Scottish football just now. Neck specialists must be busy.

Makes no difference. The whole rationale for ending the season was the piddling little amounts of money that would be released.

Clubs need money more now than they did then. Doncaster indeed is never out the papers talking about Scottish clubs maybe going bust through lack of funds.

So it's strange the SPFL is not making anywhere near the kind of fuss they did then about the urgency of getting it into the hands of needy clubs.
