COVID-19 In Scottish Football

Recommended Posts

I have some concerns if this is really the questions the SPFL board are asking the clubs.

Firstly, Doncaster said in his press release last week that the board were asking for a "clearly limited and specific degree of authority in the event of the season not being completed"

But the very first question is the board asking for support for "broad powers to manage COVID-19 related disruption".

We're now at the stage where teams are going to act in self-interest. I think that 42 clubs acting in self-interest is more likely to lead to a fairer resolution of things than the 6 clubs on the board acting in self-interest.

Peterhead general manager Martin Johnston is "surprised" other clubs have not announced redundancies after the League 1 club let go 29 people.

When the government's furlough scheme closes at the end of October, the group of part-time and occasional staff - mainly in hospitality - will leave.

Johnston says the lack of fans has put Peterhead under "serious constraints".

"For a club that has no money coming in, it is near impossible to continue to pay staff to sit at home," he said.

"I suspect Peterhead will not be the only club going into this situation and there will be hundreds, if not thousands, of businesses that will be making similar decisions as ours this week.

"We have no impending fears on the future of the club but we do have concerns that if we are in a similar situation come December, January, February then it may well be a different conversation."

A number of clubs in the lower leagues are streaming their games in a bid to claw back some of their lost income while fans are locked out.

However, for Peterhead that has failed to fill the financial black hole that the Covid-19 crisis has caused.

"When we played Brechin City in the League Cup we had 69 pay-per-view customers," Johnston said. "That generated £690. We normally take in somewhere in the region of a five-figure fee for a home game - that is the difference."

Every club will act in self-interest apart from Sevco, Hearts, Inverness CT, Partick Thistle, Falkirk and Stranraer imo.

They will do what is best for Scottish football as a whole.

Well of course, those are the only Clubs (capital C) with any honour left in the Scottish game.

The rest of the clubs (lower case c) are little more than spineless buffoons.

What would D Utd do? Or what should they do?

What is best for Scottish football as a whole? Do you think punishing teams beyond what a typical relegation represents is best for Scottish football? In some cases demoting teams only a few points behind with 24 to play for? What part of Scottish football is that good for?

If Hearts and Thistle had been relegated normally, as some on here try to make out, we would have been relegated into fully functioning leagues. It was very clear that wasn't going to be the case. We were being demoted into leagues that would be truncated at best and could possibly have to mothball due to the lack of resources of most of the teams in it.

That made the demotion much more than a regular relegation for the team at the bottom of the league. It was an additional punishment on top of an economic crisis. That's why reconstruction to ensure all the teams that could play a full fixture list and pay for testing etc were able to play was and is the best option if the games couldn't be played to a finish.

He still doesn't understand you can simultaneously think Doncaster/SPFL board are hopeless, and think they done nothing wrong this Summer.

You can simultaneously think that, but it makes you an idiot.

Dont you have a Guardian Golf article deadline to get on with?

One of the funny things about this whole thing is people thinking Ewan Murray is the only annoyed Jambo out there and that this annoyance is somehow unjustified.

Because St J and any other club would of course have just accepted it without a peep. Or Dundee would of course have voted the same way if they'd been 4 points behind Utd instead of how ever many it was.

No other club would have spent the money hearts did taking the league to court.

Apparently County, ICT and Elgin are all in a "Tier 1" region so could get fans in after Mondays announcement.

Everywhere else starting at "Tier 2/3" I think.

If we're still in the same boat come December, the SFA should genuinely think about moving the Scottish Cup final to Inverness, Dingwall or Elgin and letting the good people of those towns attend the game.

Dundee United are in talks with their players over wage deferrals or cuts.

No agreement has yet been reached and it remains unclear whether all players and staff are included in the discussions amid reports that new signings will be excluded.

United owner Mark Ogren has told the Evening Telegraph that "everything is on the table" apart from redundancies.

Scottish Premiership sides Rangers, Celtic, Hibernian and Aberdeen already have reductions or deferrals in place.

American Ogren reaffirmed his commitment to newly-promoted United, but conceded the club haven't budgeted for fans being kept out of grounds beyond October.

He said the continued absence of supporters amid the Covid-19 pandemic, coupled with a lack of financial support from government, has prompted cost-cutting measures that "could get messy".

Speaking to the Evening Telegraph, Ogren said: "We expected some fans back.

"We have to plan now for the worst-case scenario of no fans this season. We'd also like to think there will be some government assistance coming but we can't plan for that either.

"Just to be clear, we're only doing this because of Covid but I do have concerns for the future of Scottish football.

"How can businesses continue to operate when customers are banned? In this case our fans. That's a recipe for disaster quite frankly."

You could be on to something.

Ross County for me, they have a Covid test machine, players could isolate at a hotel in the area etc etc - but one "wee" gripe about Dingwall is the placement of the camera platform which gives too shallow a view of the pitch - if they were to get a big match, it would need to be up a lot higher.

He still  managed to hook a Rangers and Thistle fan who seem to actually believe it to be true🤦‍♂️

-------------------------------

My initial hope that Saints would be allowed fans back soon due to the new tier system & the fact theres relatively low cases in Perth.... well and truely dashed by the fact it seems if Dundee has a problem Perth & Kinross is just being treated as the one and same place even though Perth is 60 fucking miles away.

do you think my post was serious or

The majority of Rangers fans have certainly been quite supportive of their Edinburgh brothers in their delusion campaign over the summer. The club itself even joined in with some accusations that the fans applauded which turns out they had no fact or evidence to back up.  Why would I think otherwise?
