If League 2 declares a bottom club, whether that is over a 36-game, 27-game, 18-game or 5-game season, then that club should go to the play-offs. Those are the rules. Only the fact that it was literally impossible to play more matches stopped this happening last season.

If the Highland League don't want to restart but the Lowland League do, then the play-off is not a mockery at all. It simply means that the Lowland League champions would get straight into the final.

Those are not the rules. The current agreement is to play 27 games with play offs etc.

If there is a change to that agreement, then a new agreement has to be made and SPFL Clubs will vote on that.

you can’t seriously be arguing that the future of any Club should be decided on 5 games ?

The real problem is that there should be leadership and proposer reconstruction considered but over a period of time and not on the back of a fag packet as last season. It’s not all the spfl Clubs fault either tho, the LL and HL refusing to make any concessions about their own structure and rules makes a straight up and down a non starter.

Maybe thought for the future with the bottom two In the spfl playing both the HL and LL champions somehow.... yeah I know there will be problems, drawbacks, with the bottom2 demanding where they get relegated etc and pulling up the drawbridge.

There was an offer some years ago from the SPFL of a National League similar to England made up of a combination of top HL and LL Clubs with automatic promotion and relegation to SPFL.

They turned it down.

It's up to the SPFL to decide how many games are played in League 2, but it is not up to the SPFL to decide whether the League 2 play-off goes ahead. The rules are very clear that the bottom club should go into those.

The spfl have to agree and that goes to a vote of its members which is what happened last season.

What concessions are those?

No wonder, a fifth national league and all the extra expense that incurs with the only benefit being auto promotion doesn't seem that appealing.

They were offered some years ago a National League set up with automatic promotion and turned it down.

Not prepared to change their rules to match spfl. Ie when Cowden played Cove, they had won the league and played trialists in their last few games to rest players, not allowed in spfl.

I think most SPFL Clubs would accept a National League of say 10 teams with automatic promotion but to be fair, the spfl would need to put money into that league. The HL and LL seem to be dead set against but I don’t know why.

Surely be better than the current set up.

But promotion to the National spfl league 2 is appealing ?

As I’ve said, there should be SFA / SPFL money to support that set up.

The SPFL are not able to change the rules of the play-off without the permission of the SFA, Lowland League and Highland League. They can only decide what to do with their own league.

That’s right and that includes not participating in play offs

That’s why last season there were no play offs across any leagues and the same could happen again.

Why would these clubs agree to a national league at tier 5? it's bonkers.  There's strong argument that L1 and L2 shouldn't be national either.

This is all about the SPFL dead wood clinging onto their status, they've seen what has happened to East Stirlingshire and Berwick Rangers and are terrified. The Stenny Chairman does a good job at self-promotion, but he wants the play-offs stopped and he's shit scared.

What’s bonkers about it ?

Of course Spfl Clubs are terrified of dropping into a shit league with no ambition, no sponsors, no funding.

Clubs can’t moan about not being allowed the chance to get into a National League then say it’s bonkers to play in a National League

If there was a properly funded tier 5 then that would be good for everyone wouldn’t it ?

seems to do ok in England !

No, it does not. The only reason they got away with that was the extraordinary circumstances of last season, where no games were able to be played at their level between March and September, thus making it impossible.

The League 2 clubs have made it very clear, in a signed letter no less, that they are willing and able to play from March onwards this year, so barring any setback in the pandemic, there is absolutely no excuse for failing to participate in the play-off this time around. If this happens then the SFA should immediately suspend the SPFL in its entirety.

If there wa genuinely this kind of support for a 5th national tier, then SPFL3 would have happened.

I will try again !

The agreement is that the spfl lower leagues will play 27 games. The Clubs are willing and prepared to spend to on testing to achieve that. It is now up to the SFA to allow that.
If the SFA do not allow the 27 games to proceed then we are back to the same place as last season whereby it is impossible to complete the league.

Neil Doncaster is for it and the majority of lower league Clubs too.

The stumbling block is that the top 12 who get 85% of the spfl payouts are not prepared to give up any money to fund a 5th tier so what happens is that the lower leagues continually get pelters when actually most are up for change.

Im not aware of an offer from the SPFL ever being on the table, perhaps some other posters on here will have better knowledge?
