Last time Hibs refused to show a game vs Killie

The last time we played each other without any Killie fans in the stadium:

Nevertheless, I get Hibs worrying more about getting this right for 11k if their own customers than a few hundred Killie fans. I’ll bet there are still issues tomorrow.

See this seems to be the Hibs fans argument of choice on Twitter, and it makes zero sense.

Celtic are using the exact same system and had over 30k fans view a game just a week ago without any issues, so quite why Hibs, with a fraction of that number, would run into huge problems is beyond me.

Its quite clearly the clubs way of trying to force their fans to buy season tickets. When a huge chunk of people have lost their jobs and are struggling financially, many struggling mentally and need the escape of football, that's absolutely abhorrent behaviour and I'm amazed their fans are defending it.

Trying to "preserve the value" of a season ticket is fine, just up the PPV price so its a wee bit more. To not give the option unless they shell out £300+ is ridiculous.

The streaming is likely not where the technical issues are. It could be at the payment provider end - and being able to take punter's money and turn that automatically into the right to view a particular stream on a particular day. That'll be a different setup for each club. For ST h olders it's easy. 'Generate a username/password combo for each season ticket holder and mail it out and they can watch all the streams'. Restricting it to PPV for individual one-at-a-time subscribers is harder.

That sounds like absolute bollocks.

United managed to take a payment through PayPal and allow me to watch a test stream within minutes of payment.

You log in, and then have to purchase a "game pass". Its incredibly simple and there can be no issues with me now being able to watch further games without purchasing them.

It's incredibly simple for someone like you to use. It's not so simple for the guy writing up the web backend who has to securely take and verify the payment, generate the game pass, pass the game pass details onto the stream backend, make sure that the game pass is secure enough that it actually views the stream that you're allowed to stream and not all the other streams and so on. And this has to all be done stably, and automatically, and scalably, because you need to cope with thirty thousand Celtic fans deciding that they need to see the game and whipping their credit cards out six minutes from kickoff. United already solved this, sure. Hibs presumably haven't.

This is all a lot harder than just 'write a script that takes a list of season-ticket holders from the database, and generates a login and an email' - which can be done almost as a one-off manual job; there might be a dribble of folks who buy a season ticket immediately before a game, but it won't be anything like the numbers for PPV.

You're speaking as if its just some IT guy at Hibs left to do it all. The company being used literally specialise in this and will have given every single club as much support as possible, if not just running the operation themselves.

Hibs are quite clearly just trying to strongarm people into buying a season ticket.

I've given my money to Killie instead and signed up for an international subscription via VPN so at least I'll be able to watch it today. Weird that Hibs have laid off so many of their staff yet aren't willing to take money from the hundreds of Killie fans who would have given them a tenner to watch this.

I'm starting to think they have been a victim of their own marketing. "Only way to ensure you can see every minute at ER is a ST" was the message. Introduce ppv and that undermines that and potentially pisses off some ST holders. TBF none of my mates with ST's are bothered their arse about that, we basically all got ours as donations to the club, but the club maybe weighed up the possibility of there being a loud minority moaning about them lying to them.
