Iain Hislop (who is both smart and talented) implied on HIGNFY a few weeks ago that England had colonised Scotland (which really isn't historically accurate).

His comments was that is bagpipes worked at scaring off extinction rebellion the English would have left Scotland a long time ago. Must have missed the period when English people were ruling Scottish institutions....

Seems to a massive blind spot for even smart and talented people. English entitlement at its finest.

Not technically accurate historically speaking but just enough truth there for it to work as the premise for a joke

This is a good one

Yer Da trying to cancel Marx and Engels on his blog?

Nope an actual fellow of St John's College Cambridge. Robert Tombs.

Quote

I read History at Cambridge and worked for several years in Paris, both researching my PhD and working for the OECD. I returned to Cambridge as a research fellow at St John's, and was appointed to Junior Lectureship in the History Faculty. I have remained in Cambridge ever since. Most of my career was spent working on 19th century French history, and included publications on the Paris Commune and on French nationalism. Later, I turned to Franco-British relations since the 17th century, and later still made a foray into the history of England. I have held various Faculty and College posts, and served as co-editor of the Historical Journal. I also served on the Franco-British Council. I remain a Fellow of St John's.

The internet is bad for everyone but a disaster for old people.

I remember having a lecture where a white woman spent an hour disparaging MLK's influence in the Civil Rights Movement and insisted he was an opportunist who stole the limelight from other more worthy activists.

That'll teach him for knocking her back.

I thought the Klan cancelled MLK for those reasons back in the '60s.

You probably already know this Dave but every year, on the third Monday of January the USA has a bank holidy to commemorate Martin Luther King. Every year, Social Media is overrun with angry Trumpsters spewing hate towards him, disparaging everything he did and calling him every foul name under the sun.

That isn't cancelling though. It's never cancelling when the right-wing do it.

Aye, the amount of hate towards the man is incredible. They know they can't go after his views on racial equality without sounding like monsters to most people now, so their trump card (pun not intended) is to conjure up the trope of the black buck and say that he loved fucking lots and lots of white women.

True or not, that sounds like a good reason not to marry the man, but anyone who reviews their opinion of his social views based on where he liked to put his dick wasn't all that convinced in the first place. If they really wanted to undermine him, they'd concentrate on his economic views, considering on how unpopular socialism supposedly is...but, then again, there's always the chance that people might just think he had a point there too.

But Salmond is bad despite being acquitted of all charges against him. It’s seemingly beyond the pale that he had any interest in or involvement with female colleagues at all.
