The Famous Aberdeen’s European (Tour?) 2020

Looking at the positives of this.....

(i) Provided the league starts as scheduled on 1 Aug, having a few domestic games behind us should be helpful.  That hasn't happened since Sep 2007 when we took care of Dnipro in Round 1.

(ii) I think we should be seeded in QR 1 & 2 - there are some tricky unseeded sides, but it could be helpful, as in theory by the time the inevitable tough QR3 tie comes round, we won't be subject to an away game in 35 degree temperatures

(iii)  So far we have a settled squad - in previous seasons we have entered Europe with a whole bunch of new players.  Sevco have shown enough confidence to get through these rounds - our players still show a certain glass ceiling mentality in taking care of the ties they should, but constantly being edged out in ties that could have been won  e.g. Apollon, Kairat, Burnley, Maribor.   Even our two very good wins under McInnes vs seeded clubs (Rijeka first time round and Groningen) were 5/6 years ago now.

(iv) Does the one-off cup tie suit the Scots mentality, rather than the cagey two-legged affairs?  Time will tell - so much comes down to luck of the draw, especially in QR3.

I think the one leg format will suit Aberdeen tbh, less chance of them holding back. Probably their best chance of Group Stage qualification in years.

We've done surprisingly well in away fixtures over the years. We can play the counter attacking style McInnes prefers.

Yeah the issue is at Pittodrie, McInnes always seems to hold back against teams where if you go for the jugular then they'll crumble, like Kairat and Maribor (and to a lesser extent Burnley).

Well thanks for that. Was hoping for good night's sleep but nightmares it is!

According to the EL spreadsheet on http://cldraw.ru Aberdeen will be the first unseeded club in QR2. Still possible for that to change though, for example if the Czech play-off is won by Mladá Boleslav who are ranked lower than the Dons. Or if Cluj get their finger out and win the Romania league.

The list of possible Euro opponents is nearly complete. The teams with *p have a preliminary round to negotiate in which they are favourites. The screenshot comes from Bert Kassies site..

UEFA try to split it into regions early on for less travelling (Northern, Central and Southern Europe) so the list is likely to be a bit shorter. Its not an exact science but its likely to be a UK, Irish, Scandinavian, Baltic, Icelandic or Faeroe team from that list.
