Ages as at 1/6/20.

State of play with our squad. Not included youth that aren't playing regularly such as Callum Moore, Max Anderson or Lyall Cameron all of whom have another year on their deal.

There's not really been an ideal time to post this but with only Tom Field likely to leave us, we're pretty much set for next season and just need to bring in a few additions. Feel free to add then edit since your team's squad might not be as set.

The really annoying part of this legal action is the we will be waiting and waiting to find out which league we are in. It's a, massive difference between bringing in players to play in the seaside league as opposed to the championship. That and the massive difference in prize money that can be budgeted upon. This I fear will put us in a massive disadvantage to other clubs secure in the championship in building a squad early to allow them to settle. How many players that we could potentially pick up will just sign elsewhere to get an early wage.

Nobody will be signing anybody to an early wage! You cant furlough them, you may as well take a match to £20 notes.

Perhaps...although there is the idea that a team willing to exit the furlough scheme a couple of weeks to a month early might be at an advantage to signing players versus the teams remaining to the last minute. Yes, it would cost sorely needed funds, but it might be the way to grab some of the top talent that is available...and that might include players on furlough? If a team “extends” a players contract under the furlough scheme, is the player bound to the team? Would the player be bound if their contract wage would be more than the furlough scheme pays?

"A couple of weeks to a month" isn't what we're talking about right now though, we're fully 3 months before competitive games and at least 6 weeks before training resumes.

That said, we saw Dunfermline yesterday announce two signings which was a surprise. It's possible they are pre-contracts to begin at a later date or that they are structured in some way to be very low in value right now when not "working" and pick up to a bigger wage once we return, but either way, anything they are paying Watson and Whittaker right now is money straight up in smoke.

EDITED to add - A furlough extension is still a contract and works as any other contract. The player can't simply walk away from it to sign elsewhere, he's under contract until it reaches its end date (though there's no real reason the club would hold him to it if he asked to be released, it would achieve nothing). Players under furlough could obviously sign a pre-contract as with any normal contract.

A number of players will sign with clubs with the understanding that their salary will commence when pre season training gets underway, some will remain under furlough with current club ( if their club is using furlough ) players will want to secure their future so going a couple of months with no salary will be the best scenario for them

Which was what got me wondering if there is a tactical game to be applied in when you elect to start paying players versus using the furlough scheme. We’ve already seen clubs deciding between releasing players, extending furloughs and extending furloughs plus topping up the players pay. It is yet to be seen if the teams that elected to “waste” the funds to top up the players pay will gain from that with loyalty from those players/being seen as a more attractive club to sign with or not.

The inherent nature of football, with the promotions and relegations, makes loyalty a little less relevant, but I would certainly expect any player looking to sign between a couple of comparable teams would be interested in how things were handled during this unprecedented time. In much the same way that some players are hesitant to sign for lower level teams splashing out money, the finances of a team that simply cut all their players loose would probably be a concern for any player looking at multiple offers.

Updated with the announcement of Josh Meekings leaving the club and Paul McGowan extending his contract. I've left Tom Field untouched as no announcement has been made although I'd expect him to be added to the departures list.
